I think it can work for 5 stars but for 4 stars it does fall off. For example, you can't expect a f2p person to have a bunch of sigs or cons. I think what op might be asking is if you didn't have a lot of characters then which would be the best

If you have a Mav + Varesa there is little to gain from grabbing Gaming whereas an account with Citlali but no pyro on-fielders would benefit greatly from him. Similarly a lot of accounts simply bench their Xingqiu or Xiangling due to simply not having any teams that want them.

TL;DR: It depends on your characters and who you are planning to pull. There is no "universally valuable pick", only lazy people giving lazy advice.

What baffles me about this post is that while you’re right about F2P players, OP could’ve said “new players” and made the title make sense. Old F2P accounts are the *hardest* to generalize because, like you said, their rosters are probably gonna be imbalanced but still have enough 5*s to build a team around… but new players who aren’t at least “can get C0 of everyone who runs, no sweat” whales don’t even know for sure who they’ll have by the time they want to hit up endgame, so flexibility is a lot more important than being good in one niche.

For IT what really matters is if you have the character at all or not. 4-5 well built on-fielders will carry you, you don't need the entire cast to be built. Meeting the character amount quota is the most important hurdle.

Even if it did, there is a difference between getting a Gaming when you don't have one, when he is C0 or when he is C5.

I’d say they’re half right, but it’s not the important half, and the other half is straight-up backwards.

Being good enough as a *game* that it holds up even for low/no-spenders (at least as long as they don’t let endgame FOMO get them) is very much one of Genshin’s strengths, and having a large and active community talking about it helps a lot with marketing. But having such a large community also means most of their feedback ends up as statistical noise between the 1% rule and the diversity of opinion between different subs/blogs/etc.

Some characters have more restrictive team building than others.

Some characters may have higher peak output than others but are more niche.

Others may have lower power but fit into so many more teams.

Genshin overall is an easy game where getting ‘okay’ results rather than perfect results in most events and endgame activities will net you the vast vast majority of freemogems.

Therefore, getting as many freemogems as possible with as few yet versatile characters to yield ‘good enough’ results matters more to F2P players than those who do wishes to get everything.

Edit: I am too a F2P, Day 1 player and have mostly every 4 star at C6, but it's getting harder and harder to grind for primos when every quest is done, exploration is at 100%, abyss and theatre are cleared and onslaught too. I have all of them C6 Except Lan Yan who was just released and I only have her C2. truth is OP, like the other commenter said, who you pick has nothing to do with your status as F2p or not, just based on who you do and don't have.

since it's a free character, pick who your roster is missing and go from there. the most valuable ones are definitely Xingqiu, Xiangling, Gaming (if you play plunge) and Lan Yan (if you need a shield). Yao Yao is a good dendro healer if you're lacking healers; Yanfei is a good tank and has a shield at C4; Yunjin is decent for mono geo comps and a solid buffer if you're lacking other geo buffers. Ningguang, Beidou, Xinyan, Chongyun are early DPS characters who have better five star versions of their respective elements.

If you're new, Xiangling and Xingqiu are must-haves as far as off-field applicators go.

That said, a good Gaming can easily compete with a 5\* DPS. He's not going to beat a premium team by any means, but he's easily the best 4\* DPS.

Honorable mention to Chongyun for being a 4\* Cryo DPS. There aren't many Cryo DPSs in general so he's actually a solid pick if you need one even though he's far worse than Gaming.

Perhaps not Chongyun himself, but back in the early days I had to full-star Abyss (the abyss lector ones) with cryo Zhongli because my roster wasn't developed enough. Chongyun was essential for that.

Abyss had inflated since then, but newer players with less-developed rosters still might find use in Chongyun in other scenarios anyway.

You will need Xingqiu sooner or later. There are two sides of Abyss, three sides of Stygian Onslaught, and ten stages of Imaginarium Theatre. Unless you have a team in mind that wants c2 Beidou, it's better to go for Xingqiu.

Most of these 4 stars are great in general. Yaoyao is a great healer and decent dendro applier, lanyan is a decent shielder and can swirl for VV, is a great dps for a 4 star unit, etc.

I think it largely depends on your account. Not many of these find themselves on modern teams, but if you lack a c6 and like the unit, that's the real answer. XQ and XL are probably the "best" of the group (though many probably have at C6 already if playing for long enough). Personally, the choice is obvious for me, I'm getting C6 Xiangling. For any F2P player, either get Xiangling or Xingqiu if you don't have them since they're one of the best supports/sub-dps in the game. You can also choose Gaming as he's a pretty decent DPS, or Lan Yan since she's got a pretty good shield and is also a decent support from what I know.

All the ones I actually use are at C6, so… I think I’ll just take a free intertwined fate (aka 5 star glitter from choosing a C6 character.)

For a f2p player getting Xingqui and Xiangling (plus as many cons as possible) is always gonna be the best. Yaoyao, beidou, and gaming are alright but the first two i mentioned are by far the best. As far me since im a 1.0 player i just go with whoever has the lowest con level at this point which if i recall currently is gaming

None, at this point they all suck ass and we want Nord krai or natlan 4 stars. Sorry, I might be the ONLY One, but theyknow perfectly well they Characters people want and none of them is from the first 2 regional of the game. We want 4 stars that actually do something for my account. Faruzhan, Chevreuse, Aino, I Guess xianglin and xingqiu are use full Staples for everyone so wtv, but half of these 4 stars are DOA even if you get their 6th con. It's just filler. Who the fuck Will choose ningguang at this point? Or yanfei when you have the dragon dude that outdamges her whole rotation In a single jump attack? Or chongyun?? this is a joke
