I'm a massive retcon hater and generally dislike how hoyo has been treating the fatui harbingers. The only ones that got treated well are childe, signora, capitano, and (so far) pulcinella, and pantalone.
Wanderer irminsul erasure was absolute bullcrap in my opinion. You don't make amends and redeem yourself by literally erasing and rewriting history, effectively deleting your criminal file from people's memories without actually fixing anything. He should've remained as is, with all of his sins and evil known by everyone. Extremely cowardly move in my opinion.
Arlecchino is whole other can of worms. I don't mind her not being evil. But it was a massive retcon. It's obvious that they hadn't intended on her being good, which is why they had to shoehorn in crucabena, who was never ever mentioned before fontaine. It was always the knave doing all that fucked up stuff. Never was there any implication that there the knave was replaced recently. So this, to me, was hoyo being cowards and not wanting a character as dark as the original knave to take the stage.
Admittedly, liney, lynette, and freminet would not have worked as characters with crucabena as the knave. They woulda had to explain how these kids aren't fundamentally traumatised. But it's still INCREDIBLY CHEAP to just go, "Uhh, ah... so... yeah... there is, uh... a NEW KNAVE, uhm... and... eh... she's ACTUALLY NICE. Unlike, uh... the, the, the... the OLD... uhm... knave. Who's... uhhhhhhhhhh......... dead, uh... yeah.
I don't mind how they wrote columbina because columbina has always been the harbinger we knew the least about. We knew practically nothing whatsoever about her. They never mentioned what she did for the fatui, where she's from, what she is, who she is, what she's like, NOTHING. We practically just knew she's supposed to have god-like power, resembles a seelie, and is kinda odd (her singing, her talk with dottore). THAT'S IT. They wrote literally nothing for her.
So I don't mind them writing her the way they do. It's not a retcon or a cheap asspull or anything cuz she was a blank slate before nod krai. We just knew that childe and scara were weary of her. Which is a fair opinion from an outsiders perspective. She acts extremely odd, is clearly not quite human, and seems out of place while supposedly being this massive powerhouse of a being.

I don't think most of the harbingers where ever set up to be totally evil. All of them are very questionable and do obviously bad stuff but like it was stated: most of them are there for their own agenda, which can be more or less bad depending on who it is (Arlecchino va Dottore.)
I don't even think the end goal of the Fatui is really bad, just probably not worth the price. The Tsaritsa is the goddess of love after all. I don't think she would take irredeemable people unless she really needs them.
The best treatment was given to signora tho. The way we actually kinda pity her because she actually did go through stuff and was a very tragic person that a lot of people actually liked and respected, but not shown in flashbacks but in how people talk about her and the crimson witch set is genius.

Anyway, what happened was that she asked the Tsaritsa why she was there multiple times actually until she was nearly drained of all her power and left the Fatui to go back "home". The Tsaritsa wanted her around as an energy source for their projects. She spent her days interacting with the other Harbringers and attending gatherings so she at least has a reason to stay and not go back to the Frostmoon Scions.

Columbina's just less personable and detached then grows decides to open up and be vulnerable despite her lack of power while Nahida goes from learned helplessness to finally stop being a pushover and be a proper leader.
The two start very differently but go on a very similar character arc but Columbina wins by virtue of her development being the culmination of every little bit of screentime she has leading up to the finale.

I guess it comes down to personal preference of highly valuing agency that I think the Nahida development is more interesting.
Also while the Nahida story is probably not completely original either, I don't think there has been ever been a single Ayanami Rei/Nagato Yuki type character that does not go through this Columbina arc in some form, and compared to them, I don't think the Columbina version is particularly interesting. But there is still a patch to go, so there is a chance that I I'm being unfair and will change my opinion.

I don't really like Nahida that much to begin with. Neither is her development that great, she's really frustrating to think about and Columbina carries her own weight better in the quests she's present in. Nahida never really lacked any wisdom, power or authority, just confidence. Columbina as she is right now lacks power but she's still able to contribute something to important events.
It also helps that Columbina is just more entertaining to sit through compared to Rei, Yuki or Nahida.

As somebody who’s not very deep in anime communities or anything, and as such isn’t familiar with most of the tropes, I found her pretty novel for a Genshin character.
I can see why it would be a pretty repetitive trope, and why it would be employed often, but considering Genshin is a game that’s supposed to appeal to people who’re new to Gacha games and anime in general, I don’t think it’s that big of an issue. Especially because it’s also comfortably different then most of the previous archon’s arcs.

Even if she might have done it out of ignorance, she joined the Fatui which is morally in the slightly evil camp I think. But personally she didn't do much at all in her centuries of living - be it good or bad.
Also, a person can be evil to some and good to others and the same action can be both evil and good at the same time - Arlecchino saves orphans but also raises them as child soldiers, she also memory wipes children not willing to continue as soldiers which is almost as evil as killing in my opinion even if she does it for their safety. But, those children would probably be worse off if Arlecchino hadn't taken them in.
Also morals are hard to have in a world full of threats to survival. Having said all this, I wonder how Genshin is going to handle the Cryo Archon considering she is directly or indirectly responsible for all the atrocities committed by the Fatui, Will they show the Cryo Archon being remorseless or will she somehow redeem herself or will they just gloss over it in a few dialogue lines like they did with Ei ignoring Inazuma for centuries and somehow gets to be cutesy and ignorant while being the GODDAMN RULER OF INAZUMA. I love Ei but they really should've have spent a bit more time than they did in showing how she solved the problems that she caused in Inazuma.

I don't mind how they wrote columbina because columbina has always been the harbinger we knew the least about. We knew practically nothing whatsoever about her. They never mentioned what she did for the fatui, where she's from, what she is, who she is, what she's like, NOTHING. We practically just knew she's supposed to have god-like power, resembles a seelie, and is kinda odd (her singing, her talk with dottore). THAT'S IT. They wrote literally nothing for her.
So I don't mind them writing her the way they do. It's not a retcon or a cheap asspull or anything cuz she was a blank slate before nod krai. We just knew that childe and scara were weary of her. Which is a fair opinion from an outsiders perspective. She acts extremely odd, is clearly not quite human, and seems out of place while supposedly being this massive powerhouse of a being.

I don't even think the end goal of the Fatui is really bad, just probably not worth the price. The Tsaritsa is the goddess of love after all. I don't think she would take irredeemable people unless she really needs them.
The best treatment was given to signora tho. The way we actually kinda pity her because she actually did go through stuff and was a very tragic person that a lot of people actually liked and respected, but not shown in flashbacks but in how people talk about her and the crimson witch set is genius.
Besides, there already was conflict with Columbina being in Nod-Krai, no need to make it more convoluted

She's eating like a living thing! omg guys wife material!), she holds our hand for 2 seconds, opened two portals (with a lot of help) and didn't even thought on giving HERSELF a name in 500 years, just to accept her title as a harbinger as her real name... Girl have you done anything for yourself??? Helping a kid cross a 20 centimeters deep Stream... Wow she's the best character ever!
Bro that's the whole point. She was never anybody because she was a blank slate for people to fill in. That's why she didn't have a name. Nobody truly liked columbina they liked the idea of columbina.
When does she ever feel bad for herself and how can she develop anything when everything she has ever been is a tool to people. Yes a long lived creature not doing anything for 500 years sounds bad when we ignore the context of said 500 years.

Ignoring the story to such a degree is crazy when it's stated that after she left the laumas people she was immediately recruited by the tsaritsa. The whole you have to pay a price for freedom is convieniently getting ignored here to make it look like she had a choice that she benefited from

Anyway, what happened was that she asked the Tsaritsa why she was there multiple times actually until she was nearly drained of all her power and left the Fatui to go back "home". The Tsaritsa wanted her around as an energy source for their projects. She spent her days interacting with the other Harbringers and attending gatherings so she at least has a reason to stay and not go back to the Frostmoon Scions.
Also nahida knows everything about the world and human relationship, despite being never had a freedom from the start unlike columbina.
Columbina's just less personable and detached then grows decides to open up and be vulnerable despite her lack of power while Nahida goes from learned helplessness to finally stop being a pushover and be a proper leader.
The two start very differently but go on a very similar character arc but Columbina wins by virtue of her development being the culmination of every little bit of screentime she has leading up to the finale.
Also while the Nahida story is probably not completely original either, I don't think there has been ever been a single Ayanami Rei/Nagato Yuki type character that does not go through this Columbina arc in some form, and compared to them, I don't think the Columbina version is particularly interesting. But there is still a patch to go, so there is a chance that I I'm being unfair and will change my opinion.
It also helps that Columbina is just more entertaining to sit through compared to Rei, Yuki or Nahida.
I can see why it would be a pretty repetitive trope, and why it would be employed often, but considering Genshin is a game that’s supposed to appeal to people who’re new to Gacha games and anime in general, I don’t think it’s that big of an issue. Especially because it’s also comfortably different then most of the previous archon’s arcs.
She can't say "fuck it imma be my own thing" because she doesn't know she can, she doesn't even know how. She quite literally didn't have a childhood, so her only method of learning about the world around her was the people asking her for things. So that's the only thing she thought she could do: granting wishes.
So when the Fatui recruited her and then didn't ask her to do anything, she just sat and watched so she could at least have a place to stay at.
The concept of freedom plainly didn't exist to her. Yes she 'could' 'just say fuck it imma be my own thing" but she didn't know that's even humanly possible.

Columbina has a lot of ties to Nibelung, the genesis of Teyvat and the Moon Sisters, the Funerary War which are separate from her status as a Moon Goddess since she was essentially the leftovers from that era
All those things that sandrone have built are achievement and feats done by herself during the last 400 years
Sandrone's "feats" and "achievements" can be relegated to scrap walking around and the Adventurer's Guild which means all she's ever amounted to is being an information broker for the Fatui. Her character is an easter egg for Narzissenkreuz fans, that's about it.
Well, save for the elephant in the room being how much those two impacted each other.

Tough to be serious it is kinda funny that yeah she literally did do nothing wrong, she and Capitano are the pinnacle of good in the Fatui and Columbina is just an innocent bean. It says a lot that she is the harbinger (though she was no longer a harbinger at the time) we befriended the quickest
It is also funny that she has a “villains” page solely because she is with the Fatui. Like i can understand even Capitano as she fought Mavuika for the Gnosis but i think at this point Columbina should not even have a villains page when she has done nothing villainess on or off screen and ironically enough they list “desertion” and “insubordination” in her list of crimes as if deserting the VILLAIN organization is the problem 😂

Also, a person can be evil to some and good to others and the same action can be both evil and good at the same time - Arlecchino saves orphans but also raises them as child soldiers, she also memory wipes children not willing to continue as soldiers which is almost as evil as killing in my opinion even if she does it for their safety. But, those children would probably be worse off if Arlecchino hadn't taken them in.
Also morals are hard to have in a world full of threats to survival. Having said all this, I wonder how Genshin is going to handle the Cryo Archon considering she is directly or indirectly responsible for all the atrocities committed by the Fatui, Will they show the Cryo Archon being remorseless or will she somehow redeem herself or will they just gloss over it in a few dialogue lines like they did with Ei ignoring Inazuma for centuries and somehow gets to be cutesy and ignorant while being the GODDAMN RULER OF INAZUMA. I love Ei but they really should've have spent a bit more time than they did in showing how she solved the problems that she caused in Inazuma.
