Fast gem farming early in the game?
I have beat the prologue story and I'm halfway through the chapter 1 story. I have not been able to pull nearly any 5-star characters, let alone any good characters, so it's been a struggle to get through the game, but I realized I'm 20 rolls away from a pity-pull for the banner character (I lost the 50/50 last time Xilonen was in the gacha) and I reeeeaaaally want Xilonen. She'll be around for 8 more days and I'm still kinda lost on how all the content in the game works.
How should I prioritizing farming gacha gems at the point where I am in the game? Is it feesible to get 20 rolls in just 8 days of playing a few hours every night?

First, if you haven't already, hit the Spiral Abyss. You will get 1200 wishes easily with the starter squad by clearing the first 4 floors. Floor 1 is soloable by amber, Floor 2 is soloable by anemo traveler at level 40 and 2 pieces of instructor. Floor 3 and 4 can be cleared with Level 40 Lisa on Level 40 Magic guide. Just add Barbara on Floor 4 if you don't have another hydro.
You can also hit Stygian, you can immediately get 450 primos if you can get someone to carry you in co-op.
Other than that, just spam archon quests. They have the best primo yield, resource yield AND adventure rank rewards compared to anything else in the game.
The main story is totally doable even with the starter team, especially in the prologue
You get Xiangling for free, Sucrose as well
Drop the bear swirl with sucrose, do pyronado, then Kaeya skill and burst do some Barbara auto atks to apply hydro and swirl some more with Sucrose 📈 profit.
Also any enemy that's freezable is hilarous with Barbara's auto atks plus Kaeya there's a team in of itself
That said, it took me a little while to parse your strategy. I just got Xiangling with star piece things in the store, so I've got everyone needed for it and tried it out. I think I need to practice before I get what I'm doing. lol
Abyss appears to be a major goal, so I'll focus on that. Apparently I already did the first floor before, so it's not entirely new to me. It sounds like I need to learn how to better collect, level up, and use me artifacts and talents, and then balance my teams better. Thanks!
The only way for fast primos is money. You really only got exploration, story and events. If you can you can squeeze a bit out of abyss floors and monthly shop.
I still don't quite get artifacts and talents and how to "keep up with" them. I also play in Japanese and my friends who play can't really help me because they can't read my game, and a lot of terms are not the exact same. I've tried looking up video guides, but my brain overloads quickly with the way a lot of passionate Genshin players speak about game mechanics. Japanese guides are even more confusing because they assume you know a bunch of terms common to these types of games. I'm a casual gamer in my 30s, so I don't get a lot of gamer slang! lol
But because I've been doing nothing but pulling for her, I haven't been pulling many characters except the same ones that are always in her banner. I'm only 20 rolls away, so I don't want to have to wait until she's back to roll again. DX
I've been playing very, very casually, and only on occasion. I've tried watching some videos for tips, but a lot of it goes over my head. I do like the characters, though, and I don't actually care about strength outside what will get me through. I want all the waifus and husbandos for free please send help.
open chests - not only for the direct primos but to get sigils to OFFER to each region's "landmark": Sakura tree in Inazuma, Fountain of Lucine in Fontaine ect. (avoid Mondstadt and Liyue, there is no such thing there, even if Liyue has a lot of chests overall). Use genshin viki for more info about every region landmark, I think Natlan's one gives the most but not sure.
events - do all the events, if you play for gatcha I assume you don't care about story so eventual spoilers won't be a problem, just do all the events you can and collect the rewards.
redeem codes - check if there are codes with primogems still active that you can redeem, you can look up "redeem", "code" ect, on hoyolab and see what comes up. Not all codes give primogems but if they do it is easy free primos so it's worth a try.
oculus and statues - you can use the official interactive map to collect oculus easily, offer them to the statue, some levels give primogems.
quests - they give primogems but take a lot of time, I don't think it is what you're looking for right now.
I might forget something but this is the best that comes to my mind right now. Hope you get your Xilonen, good luck!
I'm actually playing mostly for story and characters (they go hand in hand for me). It's hard to care about characters unless I have more context around them or, like Xilonen, they're just... cool. I made a list of characters I just really like and want to pull, and almost all of them are 5-star and support... lol I gotta figure out how to balance my team. But this just means I go feral whenever one of them is in the gacha and I realize I haven't been playing frequently enough to get a lot of gems... ahahaha... Xilonen was my #1 of all, though, and I hear exploration with her is a lot of fun, so I'm very much motivated to play more now\~
Anyway, I've got a notebook out to help me write down tips (I usually go back later and re-write them to organize them), so all of this is now down on paper and I'll probably be working on these and the Abyss thing over the next few weeks. Thank you so much! You've been a great help\~ <3
