Some social media people would even name and shame said individuals who did it.

somehow it never crossed my mind to do this. It's kind of genius if you think about it, everyone person in there has at least one love in common with you. Likely more than one with how much fans overlap. A lot higher chances of finding a compatible person than random chance.
I can understand the other side though, if you are only there to have fun, chill with friends. and show off your cosplay, getting hit on would be very extremely annoying. Especially if it happened many times in a single day.
I think the best way to do it would be to go all out on your own cosplay and just hope other people come up to you first.

There's a reason why ships exist that are from different franchises, like Twilight Sparkle with the Blue Bird from Regular Show, Ratio x Alhaitam, Even Dottore has one with another character from another franchise, but I can't remember the name right now. That Doom x Animal Crossing ship. Even the ship that is me x me, I think is called selfcest.
Many people do it for fun, for example, me with the OC x canon. I find it fun, especially doing it with Obey Me characters, because I find interesting the trope where there is another human student but it isn't taking the MC spotlight.
