What's your coping mechanism for FOMO as a f2p or low spender?
Mine is the same old classic ignoring last few levels of the endgame content.. plus pulling for characters who are fun in the overworld and ignoring characters who have anti synergy with all my existing characters, even if I like the character a lot. It's makes skipping your "want" character more bearable. And dps who are restricted to only one archetype, like those recent nod krai dps, are also easily skippable for me unless I really really like the character..

1. Have a plan in advance.
2. Take a week off now and then, to force yourself to see nothing bad happens, and your account isn't bricked
I've found planning and exposure therapy work pretty well for all sorts of mental blocks, phobias, etc. FOMO is just another version of those things.
Yesterday I was playing Snowtrace with my kids. They were running all around the house disguised as cardboard boxes (thanks Christmas deliveries), laundry baskets and pillows. I tried to catch them throwig a towel upon them, occasionally 'catching' pillows that had nobody hiding underneath, just for laughs. Our youngest took a broom, proudly 'hiding' behind it. It was so cute and funny that I pretended not to see him.
>Plays genshin
But why...
Adulthood is not same for all. And surprise: there is absolutely no rules how to be adult, or parent.
I am a low spender (like less than 150 hundreds dollars since 1.2) seems to work fine.... Yeah I miss some meta choices here and there and my dps carry have suboptimal teams, but it's fine
Generally FOMO (from a western LS game) indicates a competitive edge over the other player so u try hard to fit in like with Fortnite where having a skin is a necessity as it's competitive team and having a base skin means u are either a noob or person who sucks at the game as Fortnite is all about BP progression & skinless means u aren't good enough to play the game.
But genshin isn't competitive one so talking about FOMO for a game that is a casual exploration game is pretty stupid to begin with. So what are u competing with and whom and for what reason? The only reason FOMO would matter in genshin is if u like to brag to ur friends about something else there is no reason for FOMO in genshin cause characters and weapons are constantly rerun and free 4* are handled out through events. And the events are generally a month long so u have enough time to do them even if u spend like 30 min in a day.
Didn't get Varesa, but I got Escoffier and I love seeing my Ayaka deal actual damage. Didn't get Skirk, but I got Ineffa and she turned ou to be a great character.
Why care about something you missed if you already have fun with what you have?
I don't do dailies every single day, I let my resin cap sometimes, it's a game, not a job, just have fun.
As for endgame, do the math, seriously.
Not even touching floor 12 an entire year is just 15 wishes. If I miss 1-2 stars and find that reset boring, so be it. If I had fun fighting the enemies that reset, I will retry until I get the stars or stop having fun trying.
° the fun part being the jean fall dmg tech and doing Durin plunges
"They'll rerun eventually", and I say that as someone who waited over a year for Eula and Shenhe to get their reruns. I wanted Flins more than Lauma, and if I lose my 50/50 on Columbina well, then I'm guaranteed Varka.
The game as a whole is balanced around giving you limited resources for wishing and then leaves it to you to manage those resources so that you can get what you want and what you need to win.
Of course, you can't get everything, if they did it would be boring and there would be no game. For people who do spend it's basically like paying for a cheat code. But they actually do give you more than enough to keep up with the endgame and also still waste some wishes just on characters you like.
If I screwed up, well, it doesn't bother me that much, I lost this round of the game, it's just a game and there'll be more rounds in the future. But playing the wishing game smart, it's also not that difficult to get on top and stay on top.
For me, there just isn't much to cope or complain about. Game is totally fine as is. If you step back, the number of characters you have in the game is nuts, if this was a non-gacha singleplayer RPG, players would be like what the heck, why are we given so many characters, it's overwhelming.
In HSR: I auto battle endgame
In ZZZ: I run Shiyu and DA once, only redoing something if I was very close.
The Hoyo style of gacha games is very casual, you’re not expected to spend more than an hour in the game. I’ve seen plenty of people complain about the very visual novel style of presenting the story, but I honestly find it great, I’m not really pressured into having to stare at a screen for long periods. I can go and do other things.
Applying this in FOMO should have a similar affect. Now you have FOMO on gacha characters, try getting FOMO on some other things like that one public event that happens every once in a month. Soon you would find yourself have FOMO on life, true happiness and friends you made along the way.
Instead of getting rid of your problem (FOMO or @ddicti0n) it's better to embrace them and use them to your advantage.
You just have to really focus on what it is you really want out of the game, and what your level of skill/time commitment will allow you to do. If you want to clear all endgame then accept that you need to increase your skill level in order to make up for the lack of premium characters. Otherwise if you’re just trying to collect cool/cute/hot characters then just accept that you aren’t going to clear all endgame.
At the end of the day, what’s important out of a game is that you enjoy it!
Look, I only have so much time. Between parttime work, University study, and rest time. There isn't much I can do even if I fear I'll be missing out on something.
So, I just say "I don't care"
I don't care if I'm unable to 100% some region. I can comeback later.
I don't care if I don't have time to play event fully, just give me primo and get out.
I don't care if I can't get into late game because I have no meta character. Just get what I can and nope out.
I'm not gonna spend my time slaving away grinding when I'm already slaving away in Uni and parttime.
This isn't cope, this is just correct. Getting a character just to full clear is not worth it because they are not paying for themselves before you get a replacement.
I've been playing since July as a low spender and my roster is still pretty small... so I decided to treat the last levels of endgame content as something I may or may not get and just focus on builting teams for the characters I loved during the story: Alhaitham and Venti so far, Ororon pending his rerun.
I'm only AR57 and my only limited characters are Ineffa, Alhaitham, C1 Lauma, C2 Venti and Durin. But being picky means I still have 172 wishes saved for Columbina and Nicole so I'm still not rushing exploration (I still have 80% of Fontaine and about half of Natlan)
After Ororon, Columbina, and Nicole, my only target is Dain, whenever they decide to make him playable.
My pulling choices are mostly separate from my like/dislike for the character. I like Varesa a lot but I know a) I'm getting Bina next patch b) I'm getting Flins in 6.4 who's dmg with Bina will be high af
I pull for meta characters, it helps when I like the characters ofc (Like Bina, Flins, Ineffa). I still pull for them if I don't like the character much (Nefer, kinda, and Escoffier) but their use is attractive enough.
After all, if I want to appreciate a character I can look at fan arts, yt shorts and cutscenes and what not. I don't have to get them.
If I just can't help it I use a second account, satiate my cravings a little I guess (it doesn't always work and if you are not regular enough on that account then logging back makes you a little demotivated)
Did you roll the weapon? Have fun grinding it's amaterials. See you next month.
Did you farm all gold books skillbooks?
Hope skill upgrade materials don't come from specters
Isn't killing the same boss 25 times for the ascension mats fun?
Don't forget to get 168 bugs or flowers or mushrooms too!
Oh wait, you need to kill 20 weekly bosses too if you want to max the skills
And now we can start grinding artifacts.
What do you mean goblet element is not universal and you have 27 wrong ones?
Sounds like a skill issue to me
One of my friends criteria is she only pulls for the anemo boys which helps her save alot. I think having a criteria of characters you like will help you become a lowspender
Also it feels nice seeing my primogems go up to 200k by saving alot, I also figured i shouldnt pull on non archon/harbinger characters since one day snezhnaya might just drop multiple pullable harbingers at once.
I’m a F2P gacha player with other games too and I plan ahead. (Watching the patch preview, seeing character trailers, etc). I base my rolling on fun and appearance factor, not endgame usefulness. (Fun thing about Genshin is you can make pretty much every character work; Noelle has been my main since day one and she still slaps)
Also… it’s a video game. It’s designed to be fun. I try my best not to take it too seriously. Characters I potentially want will return someday.
But also I could hardly call myself F2P anymore since getting a job lol.
Although this is more like 95/50 split because I always pull for stuff I want and a lot of them happen to be meta relevant
I would say at least 2 of the newer characters to deal with regional gimmick, after that I pull who I like or can bring more value to my old favourites
If I don't like a character I don't get them just for sake of meta. Fuck you Mavuika and Bennett
A character will rerun eventually. Although I had to wait years for a rerun before but it was fine. The character was still relevant.
…Partly true, I suppose. But it makes sense, I only want the characters I actually care about. It helps when you set your expectations.
*Copes copes copes copes copes*
Like I stopped clearing the 12floor of spiral abyss and pretty last stages of end game contents since the effort I needed to do just doesn't seem worth to the reward I'm gonna get.
Also really helps that I just really see these gacha games as a side game and not my main games at all , Like I'd rather do a lot of stuffs on non gacha games because it has actual completion and not gonna be explore this new area again next patch.
As for coping, I usually am very busy with office projects
so I don't really mind much leaving something so stressful.
Having 2 very very strong (constellations or not) is enough to get you through nearly every abyss on their own. Imaginarium wants some investment into more units, but because you need to 'use' 20 characters in total, you don't need to have too much horizontal investment to beat it (even if more would mean an easy time choosing sometimes)
Stygian obviously needs 3 teams, but there is a reason people brute force even dire.. because you can.
I recommend pulling for a good amount of supports over time before focusing on niche DPS's. It provides more options and can often just be better in general to do.
In the end, the literal only thing that matters is enjoyment. Not even primos.
If I fail a 50/50, it doesn't depress me on missing out due to reruns and I didn't save enough to cover the loss so that's on me and I either keep summoning if it's a character I want or save for the next.
A great example is Varesa. I failed her on release, but with Bina in less than a week, I won't have enough to reach high pity twice if I use my primos now. I'm at 50/50 and I'm also debating on Zibai or Ineffa after Bina.
Then, understand that proper planning and understanding your team roster will make a massive difference in the amount of FOMO you experience in the first place. Know what gaps you have in your roster, and what sacrifices you will need to make to fill those gaps. Otherwise if you pull willy nilly, you will always be missing out on the alternatives that would have functioned better.
Also know when you can "afford" the luxury of either skipping a strong meta character, or pulling for a less than useful one. This way you can say to yourself later "I've done all I can"
As for timed events, I just go slow, progressing over multiple days, so it neither takes much time nor becomes a slog.
1. Is it good for Varesa?
2. Is it good for Jahoda DPS (for the funnies)?
3. Is she *bad?*
F2P get 60-80 pulls per patch. Conservative amortized average for a limited unit is 135 pulls (excluding refund from starglitter).
If you only pull when you have 180, you’ll always have a buffer that’s statistically very likely to always guarantee a limited character every other patch, and occasionally allow for more than that.
So when PV rolls around, build a stack rank of who you want. You should be able get at least 6 limited units F2P per major version. You can likely get 8, but just don’t plan on it.
If you follow this strategy you’ll never get fomo, because your expectations are very clearly managed.
Alice has no patch confirmation yet (or if she has one I missed it) and Nicole is the only one confirmed from 6.x thus far so it's pretty easy for me to accumulate rolls.
I also am annoyed by teams that "need" more than one unit to be good (supposedly Mauvika, I *hated* playing her during story quests so I didn't dive too deeply) or teams that only work with a few reactions (Skirk.) So even if I like a character, my outright hatred of boxing in comps or character lineups wins every time. There's no point in saving for "one" character that needs a bunch of external investments, otherwise I do the same damage I already do with my non-meta mostly Tall Ladies (and Bennet) teams.
I can't clear stygian obviously, but I wouldn't waste time on it even if I could since I don't need the feathers and elixirs. The other two endgame modes are still easy tho and I can always fully clear them first try.
But UGGGGHHH I’M GONNA MISS VARESA
I'm very picky about the characters I want to get so most of the time I'm never skipping unless I dumped my primos on a character I really liked. Like when I got C2R1 Furina or C3 Nahida and had nothing for the characters that came after them (had to skip Wanderer and Xianyun respectively). Otherwise I just don't think about it
