why are people so quick to blame everything on the cn fandom?
it seems like whenever anything happens with genshin, people point to cn players as the root cause.
lack of male characters? chinese incels!!!
increase in waifu-type characters? chinese incels!!!
powercreep? chinese players!!!
i'm even now seeing people say that chibi birthday arts were discontinued because the cn players didn't like them.
are people forgetting that just like how there are many different sides to the english-speaking playerbase, there are many different sides to the chinese playerbase? they're not some like-minded monolith.
it's probably, or maybe definitely, true that mhy's priority is with the chinese fandom since they're a chinese company, but i don't think it's fair to blame every little thing on them.
similarly, people say that everything mhy does is because of some vague "chinese law" and yet i never see any evidence of these laws existing!!

Who here remembers Zhongli's initial release?
I was laughing for a week because i skipped him for Albedo and it was the right decision for off field dps and some support.
And then the backlash came so hard they had to give him multiple buffs and then he makes a mockery of most boss mechanics with his shield, and on top of that shreds resistances like he's some anemo character.
All because of his identity as an Archon representing the Chinese region.
League community did this exact same thing with the same country whenever changes they didnt like happened over there.
Granblue Fantasy community does this as well (although it is validated there as the devs have literally admitted they cater only to jp audience).
Dragalia Lost community used to do it also.
This is just the cope theory when something someone doesn't like gets added to the game. Sometimes it is right, sometimes its not.
I mean, you just have to go under any post in the past that asked for darker skin to see this happening
People really have to realise that CN isn't one monolith who wants one thing, in fact some CN people also think that hoyo only listens to global and ignores them, when in reality hoyo just does whatever they want.
ofc they’ll now blame CN players when CN players have been used to rationalize Hoyo’s decisions for so long, even by those defending Hoyo
Everywhere will have stupid people, smart people, good ideas, and bad ideas.
No matter which patch we are in, liyue story will be forced to be included in some way in the story to make the region stay relevant lol.
We all know why.
It's worth noting that CN players also tend to think any decision Hoyo takes that they don't like is because of the Western Audience.
The reality is most likely something we could never determine ourselves; metric-driven decisions to which we lack any access or valid estimate of the data, internal conflicts, key artists quitting, artists demanding increases in salary, etc.
CN has 1.41 billion people. Its an effing huge country. I think as a rule hoyo makes efforts to appeal to multiple regions, but at the end of the day the bulk of their customers ARE in CN.
And realistically theyre probably cognizant of the existence of loud minority factions in their social media spaces and likely dont put as much credence into it as we think they do.
Like what's with people thinking 'complainers complained about map expansions too much and now we arent getting them!!' Realistically if hoyo actually is making a choice to tone down the number of map expansions in their regions, its due to their internal data numbers reflecting not enough players were actually doing them for the company to continue ranking it as a high priority. No minority player population bullied the billion dollar company into releasing less maps.
Edit: its 1.41 billion, not 1.6 billion.
Gonna need a fact check on this one.
There is much to be said about the insularity of the CN gaming market and the independent gaming culture they have developed. It is perhaps easy to say that Chinese companies develop Chinese games for Chinese consumers that same way that it might be the case for Americans, but the difference is that the culture surrounding the monetization of games like Genshin means that it could have only emerged through a long-term low spend consumer base that has a reliable population of high spenders. Im not going to go much further on my economics paper because that requires some really boring numbers to crack, but it is an easily observable metric that the share of the CN market weighs heavier than global that it is much more cost effective to keep catering to them
But I'm not certain if that fully explains what you're citing, if only because I highly doubt people are thinking solely about cashflows. Rather, I feel as though people in here, Reddit specifically, have psychologically attached "CN Reaction" as the biblical truth for how Hoyo operates. Yes, the numbers might lend credence to that but I feel like we here in Reddit have also developed our own insular culture that feels the need to justify its views through the actions or lack thereof from what we perceive to be the most vocal group.
The Neuvillette example is a good one, as while now there are many people saying that Hoyo pulled the showcase video off the net is because of CN backlash to the burst animation. Whereas the day before, there were comments trying to argue that the skin was popular in CN and is widely praised there so there's no use in voicing criticism for it. While both can be true if one looks at the comments and discussions for it in weibo or bilibili it's really difficult to make a definitive case for what is or what isn't without comprehending the totality of it all. I would say they same for much of the things that this community on reddit has gone through.
Whether it be for example in the character designs in Natlan and Sumeru, or the implications and coding present in certain characters. People would like to say for example that "CN beauty standard does not favor X skin tone" to justify their thoughts on the matter while another would say "But if you look at CN reception on character with X skin it's not the case.". Or "There are legal restrictions that prevent Y from being shown in CN so they couldnt do that." and you'd have "But showing Z on made CN make an attempt on the CEO so they wouldn't do that either." to make a counterargument.
I think it's just easier for people on reddit to attribute their sentiments to the CN community because it makes it feel more definitive. Regardless of stance, truthfulness, or extent of that truthfulness it may just be more assuring to people on Reddit to find some dozen or so comments in a nation of billions to back their words than stand by it on their own. I know I'm certainly guilty of it sometimes.
TLDR: Reddit is Reddit, everyone is somewhat aware of that, so we pretend we're not the ones making the call.
Edit for Addtions: This might have to do with the nature of other game companies as being expansive, while CN in this case is more insular. Western studios and to an extent even JP studios put global opinion into relatively higher regard in spite of a strong home market, while the preexisting insularity of Chinese gaming culture coupled with its size means that the local company mindset of paying much more attention to them is still evident despite their games being more global and mainstream.
people know about, the “west” has market sales proportionate to whatever influence it has. Take Nintendo, for instance. Its largest market is not Japan - it’s the US.
Gacha games are very different state of affairs. Despite the US’s comparatively deep pockets, they don’t spend as much on gacha games.
That’s different, and people on Reddit just haven’t gotten use to it.
But such things are so deeply ingrained in east and southeast Asian markets that you're right, it's hardly even comparable.
Could you imagine if this type of thinking was applied to other games? Silksong was delayed because of the unique laid-back, anti deadline work culture of Australians. Overwatch had little staying power outside of porn because the American audience values sex appeal above all else. It sounds kind of insane to attribute to the entire culture the decisions of one company or one demographic right? But this happens to Chinese games constantly.
Now that's not to say cursing them out every time something happens to the game that you don't like ia justified.
Also they are unhinged and will fly off the handle if they feel slighted or neglected
It was specifically one psycho that killed specifically one cat and nobody, including CN players, thought that was anything short of deranged behaviour.
This spread into people over here on GL claiming it was a widespread thing to overexaggerate CN players' toxicity as part of the exact behaviour OP is talking about, mostly thanks to one post that tried capitalising on this hate.
Pls don't spread this anymore. No one likes killing cats. It's not normal behaviour for anybody, and it certainly isn't something "CN players" (like a billion people) partake in.
Of course that doesn't make it okay to blame the CN fans for things that are wrong with the game. We should blame HYV for how they operate instead of shifting the blame on others.
However, since HYV mostly makes their decisions based on the CN fans responses, it's just... the default fandom to blame? Surely this is not your first time encountering generalisation of a community by their haters.
"Lefties want to kill babies!"
"Furries are zoophiles!"
"Right wingers are pedophiles!"
"Christians are stupid!"
"Atheists are all just in denial!"
All of this stuff is something you can encounter daily, en masse. This is simply how "hate" works.
"CN is to blame for this change!" is the exact same mechanism - a bit of truth that transformed into an ugly stereotype
who said that? i saw nobody say that lol
When we riot, we obtain nothing; when CN does it, not always, but they got what they want. Most of the highest toxicity peak had been reached by their community.
But some controversial choices are justified by ppl/whiteknights because "is CN beauty standard", or "they wants only waifu", "they absolutely hate see their waifu in love with other playable characters ", so MHY have to do it.
Im not blaming CN, but "western west haters" that act like CN' garden is always greener while Westers are just stupid, who brings the unfun (while some talks about MW West vs MW Asia, the second one is funnier, but they don't waste the opportunity to blame the west saying "instead of playing they complain " while maybe is just western players are more attracted by the main game).
Nah, power creep is because Genshin is a gacha game.
You can't even blame gacha on the Chinese, that blame goes to the Koreans or Japanese.
Often work like the making the happy birthday pictures is done by new staff as a type of training exercise if the picture is 3D it's because they are training 3D artists and animators.
If it's 2D they are training their various 2D artists.
basically smaller tasks like these reflect a developers current training and hiring needs and trends.
Someone else said it best: When CN sneezes, Hoyo brings tissues; when global sneezes, Hoyo buys earplugs.
In older MMOs and other games, server locations often would lead to rare monsters spawning earlier for East Asian players and in Chinese versions of their games, they often had higher rates. They are also not opposed to utilizing $$$ for power which is normal in Gacha but shouldn’t be in online multiplayer games.
In all of these scenarios, they cheered when it was advantageous to them because culturally they have a superiority complex like they are trying to compensate for something. This is in conjunction with a very pro gambling addiction.
Also, honor cultures like East Asia love dick measuring their family names so they like to advertise their notoriety, family lines, and parentage through displays of wealth. That’s why you see Asians in crazy cars and whatnot in American colleges because they want to advertise and compare with other Asian families in a sort of “my family is richer and more prominent than your family” battle.
All the while bickering and complaining when they are not the primary consideration. It’s kind of pathetic most of the time.
I’d also argue that online, the LGBTQ only makes up around 13%-20% of gamers but they make up the vocal majority. So they often influence the twink, waifu, androgynous, etc nature of most characters. Like I can never even view the Varka subreddit without it being full of comments, memes, and art of sexualized gay fantasy Varka.
2) Hoyo is making games primarily for them.
3) They are the target audience
4) we just get the scraps
