Is it worth starting?
Hello everyone!
My only experience with gacha games has been Tower of Fantasy, about 500 hours in, and I really enjoyed it!
I'm eager to get into one. I tried Honkai and Zzz, but neither of them grabbed me.
I'm tempted to try Genshin, but I'm scared. Since it's already 6 years old, I feel like I'm too late. There will be a lot of content I won't understand at all, and I'll get overwhelmed and lost.
What do you think? Is it too late for me?
Or is it easy to understand how the game works and catch up?

And yes, it's absolutely worth starting
Anyway, try wuwa, better gacha rate, rewards, gameplay/combat.
Both are good. I personally like Genshin a bit better overall. Try Both, no harm in checking them out and seeing which one tickles your fancy best.
In terms of "catching up" that's only really relevant for being part of discussions on social media about recently released story content.
For co-op you can queue to fight in Domains ( Dungeons for artifacts(gear), character materials, weapon materials).
Fight weekly bosses (except two bosses)
There is a build your own world called the serenatea pot that you unlock later. You can have other players visit you there.
There is a TCG you can unlock that you play against other players.
You can also explore your the world with other players and vice a versa
XD
If nothing else...it's free to download and very accessible. You don't lose anything if you want to try it and see what you think.
Just don't get overwhelmed or too stressed about catching up to everything immediately - take your time, enjoy exploring and don't worry too much about meta at first. Get a feel for what you like. You can't really start seriously building characters at first anyway, so just grab who you personally like.
I'm one of the people that mostly ignore meta entirely and only pull characters because I like them. I can still get up there in endgame when I feel like doing it. You'll get there.
There are some events that you might to be able to experience right away, but some of them would spoil the story anyway.
- Genshin: Fantastic intro
- HSR: Also pretty good intro
- Honkai 3rd: Actively punishes new players
- Wuwa: starter 1.0 content is ok but rough, which is a shame as 2.0 is so much higher quality
- ZZZ: Not bad either, however there are rough areas from the devs switching development direction soon after the game launched
Gacha-wise, new characters are generally easy to use and perform well with low investment. But anyway Genshin is already 5 years old, character building needs planning.
If you do like it, consider getting the $5/month daily login bonus. Pretty inexpensive and helps a lot if you play consistently.
Pros: you have A LOT OF CONTENT to go through...which means PULLS
Cons: you have A LOT OF CONTENT to catch up...which means HOURS (probably days or weeks atp) of quests.
Don’t worry about meta at all unless you’re planning to do endgame content. Although I do recommend researching what teams work well with each other. Also don’t feel like you’ll be lost and behind everyone, some people don’t care about the story and only meta, others don’t care about meta and only the story I have friends that haven’t even finished the Archon quest (the main story quest) from 2021.
Compared to that, WuWa is relatively newer, and much better than Genshin. Though, I think the last part is more subjective.
Genshin is definitely more polished, and optimised, but if you have a decent system, then I can guarantee that you will enjoy WuWa much more than Genshin. Because it really is better in every other aspect. Be it story, characters, animations, voice acting, or anything you can think of. There's a reason why WuWa won this year's player's voice award in GOTY.
So yeah, go for WuWa. Or maybe any other newer game in the genre, like DNA, or even Where Winds Meet, if you want something completely new and don't want to play catch up.
If you ignore that currency, that basically means you ignore getting new characters. And without new characters constantly, I think one will get bored with these kinds of games pretty fast. Because honestly, games like Genshin or WuWa are not the kind of games that can keep you hooked even when you play the same 2 year old character forever. They need you to keep getting new characters every now and then, not just for the end game content, but also to keep the game "fresh" artificially.
And that's one more thing I like about WuWa. The content they add in every new version often (not always) ends up becoming permanent content. Meaning new players don't have to worry about it going away.
In the event that they dont want to do it cuz it breaks immersion, they can get gems from exploration/quests instead to get their characters/weapons. Going out your way to do it is playing catch up (which by that point you are treating it mainly as a gacha game first and everything second).
Thats how i handle wuwa when i first got back into it in 2.x. Cant do the events atm cuz it was story locked LOL. Surely they changed that atp.
I do agree about the events not being permanent and stuff.
But I think, they do provide a TP, because I remember there being a TP already activated in Chenyu Vale when the area first became available.
But still, let's be real, going to a new area just to do a version specific event and take in all those unfamiliar sights when you know that the region's AQ will probably introduce you when you arrive there, doesn't sound and feel great. It's a drag.
And I do agree that I am treating these games as gacha games, but that's because they are gacha games. I personally prefer WuWa over Genshin, but still, I will have to say that even WuWa doesn't come close to "real" games like Witcher 3, RDR 2, Elden Ring, etc.
Games like Genshin and WuWa have everything mediocre at best, except for music. For example, just yesterday, I was playing Luna 1 AQ, and as I mentioned in my first comment, it took me 3 and half hours to only complete 2/3rd of the quest. And honestly, for the time I gave it, the AQ was not very impressive. There were so many moments which could've been much better. Like, at some point, Lumine came along, and the traveler decided to go on an "adventure" together with her, and that whole thing was so less "impactful" and dull. I also had two interactions with Columbina and 1 interaction with Sandrone, all of them felt pretty bland. And it's probably because of the script, and the way Genshin and other similar games represent its story.
I have always hated the way most Gachas present their stories. The click-to-continue system is so outdated, even GTA SA didn't use it, which is a 2 decade old game. And combine that with the generic animations and emotionless expressions, it becomes even more boring.
I noticed that WuWa is recently fixing it. Their newer main story quests feel more like a fully animated scene instead of a click-to-continue mechanism, but it's still not perfect. But it's much better than WuWa's story telling a year ago, and Genshin's story telling now.
Now, I know my whole comment may sound like I hate Gacha games, but that's not it, or maybe it is. But still, I think Gacha games only have a bit of value when something significant happens in the game. Otherwise it's an endless trap of being baited by "good looking" future characters, and once you get in that, which you will most definitely, then the company will basically keep making you play the game and repeat it like a chore every single day, even when there's nothing new or interesting to do.
Originally ToF was a worse version of Genshin until it found its own identity.
Genshin is proly right behind Skyrim and FFVII as best RPGs ever
-you play by urself mostly no rush, ur own pace
-decent story
-fun gameplay
Con
-in the end it gacha game
Dont be scared its a game after all. Just started a new acc recently I think whats best is however you want to play the game however that may be
Theres plenty of just general guides to get an idea but youll pick it up really quickly.
Its a gigantic game with so much content so there is no rush to do everything immediately the game isnt going anywhere.
There some really really beautiful areas in the game, during the sunset time when i feel overwhelmed which does happen I vibe out on some beach and try and delete an enemy from the other side of the horizon just because you can lmao.
Also, now is a very good time to join in since there's the lantern rite coming where you get a free 5\* selector.
Beyond that, I’d say yes Genshin is in a really good place at the moment so go right ahead and start having fun.
Don’t worry about being too late. I’ve managed to pull people into the game in 3.2 and even most recently in 6.2 so it’s never too late.
Pros: you have A LOT OF CONTENT to go through...which means PULLS
Cons: you have A LOT OF CONTENT to catch up...which means HOURS (probably days or weeks atp) of quests.
My best suggestion is to not rushing to progress the story of the game.
You can follow your desire about getting more free primogems in the game, etc, but don't rush the story progression and follow it, read the dialogue of main stories, even the world/side stories, while you can delay to read other lore sources such as books, scrolls, etc.
Eventually, you will understand how and why Genshin story (this game is an RPG after all) is one of the best aspect that makes people stay and loyal to play the game despite all ups and downs for the last 5+ years since the game is released.
It's not too late to start however.
Edit: and event exclusive weapons which are never meta
quality of life is better, more characters, more team archetypes and the story improved.
so, if you are interested, now is the best time to start.
The only major drawback I see is that if you really get into the story and lore of the game, there's a lot of Limited Time events that are no longer available in-game that tell interesting stories that expand on the lore and characters of the game. You can watch them on Youtube, but it's just not the same as experiencing them.
I definitely recommend that you give it a spin, though. It's free, after all, so all you'd be losing if you decide it's not for you is some time.
If you care about the story and open world, the later you start the more content you have access to right away instead of waiting for the next patch like the rest of us lol.
I don't really see a reason why now would be a bad time to start. Genshin isn't a PVP/MMO game with rankings or whatever. End-game content is easy, the hard stuff doesn't reward very valuable things, you're not competing with anyone, it's mostly a single player adventure game.
