The answer is that Bowser is a father.

No, really. Once it turned out that he was a good dad, people forgave him a *lot* of crap. And we are talking a guy who tried to conquer the universe multiple times.

The other half of it is that Dottore has repeatedly attempted to run experiments on literal children, was partially responsible for killing Dilucs dad, and is also the primary reason Scaramouche went off the deep end for a while.

People give Bowser a lot of grace for a few reasons. One, the inherently cartoony nature of Mario lends it to have issues taken less seriously and while Peach is kidnapped a lot, she tends to take it as a minor annoyance if anything. Plus Bowser is a great father and a solid boss, which gets him a lot of points with the audience. Like, Bowser has never genuinely hurt anyone on screen. Sure hes threatened it, but its never actually happened.

In contrast, Dottores actions are treated with the weight and severity one would expect. We also see the direct consequences of his actions via sympathetic characters such as Diluc, Collei, and Wanderer. Hes completely immoral, actively hurts children, and is completely unrepentant about it.

In short, Bowser may be a villain, but hes one with a clear line in the sand he's never crossed. Ergo, hes a lot more sympathetic then Dottore.

Of course we all know this is fantasy game, so we're free to like characters regardless of ethics, design, gameplay, etc. I was just saying that Dottore since the beginning was painted as a villain, likely irredeemable 'bad guy', so there has been built up to it, there has been an intention to make him that way.

The female character bit was mostly a joke, in which if a character is made attractive most of the fandom tends to 'forgive' or ignore past actions. Ex. Raiden, Arlecchino, and probably Sandrone too. This is also done with male characters but doesn't work as well I think.

Rhinedottir I guess not? Too early to tell perhaps. I still don't like her either way and doubt that'll change.

Like I really didn't mind how they did Arlecchino, tbh. They still made her someone who kills to get her way — and killing rich pedophiles is absolutely a serve — they still made her absolutely unhinged in her own story quest, and they nailed the catharsis with Clervie (am lesbian did cry). And she still manages to be morally grey! Like, she loves those kids and wants the best for them... but she's also willing to scare the shit out of them, and raise them into doing extremely shady shit, in order to survive in the spycraft hellscape they all live in. She's basically sitting at the intersection of Vivinos and Project Moon. Plus, she handed Aether his own ass on a platter. She goes hard in a way that no other female Genshin character has, imo.

Raiden there's no excuse for at all, though. They took a supposed warlord and just kinda made her a hikkikomori moeblob who doesn't know what a novel is, can you explain to her what is this concept called... ""fictionne"? They could just have, like... written a character arc where she learns how to not be a tyrant instead, lol. It would not have been hard! I would have liked her sooo much more if they'd just written her as a character with boobies rather than just a pair of boobies that so happens to be able to talk.

ETA: Agreed with them doing it to male characters as well. I feel like Durin of Dragonspine was very much a casualty of "b-but we can't make him ACTUALLY a gothic horror character because that's too spicy for the puritan end of the fandom to digest, and we want their money more than we respect our audience or our own myth arc"

Well for one, despite being a villain, Bowser isn't utterly immoral. He tries to conquer the world, but usually in just standard domination. He's also a legit good boss to his minions and a great father to his son. He's a bad guy, but not a monster.
