Hot take : Nathan was overhated and Mavuika's characterization as an archon of a nation in war was misunderstood

Sure made a lot of money for an overhated nation. Maybe reddit/Twitter comments continue to be the worst way to judge the opinions of a community.
Patient_Piece_80232026-01-08 15:37
I mean you can technically say that they're over hated on Reddit and Twitter
Dull_Engineering91352026-01-08 15:39
I guess not everywhere u looked on insta it was hated too. I got death threats for posting ONE comment defending varesa so 🤷🏻♀️

It made around 20% less than past regions, only making 800m-900m dollars in a year as far as ik while the others easily surpassed 1 billion.
Mavuika also was pulled far less in her first banner than past archons like furina and nahida according to the wish tally, only having been pulled 250k times while the past archon furina surpassed 370k+, her first rerun also didn't do as good as other archons and while the wish tally isn't as reliable, it's a decent way to guess how much a character was perceived by the community, the active player count also dropped by 5.x patches according to some sources and genshin accounts's social media performance (views, engagement ect) dropped massively in natlan so i don't see it

>It made around 20% less than past regions, only making 800m-900m dollars in a year
You got a source that compared how much each region made, to come up with those claims?
Did the other regions made less than the previous by 20% or more?
*EDIT :*
*Looks like person above made shit up.*
[*Here's one source.*](https://www.businessofapps.com/data/genshin-impact-statistics/)
*Revenue 2022 (1.9bil) to 2023 (1.3bil) was >30% drop.*
*2024 (700mil) , >40% drop.*
*If 2025 was 800-900mil, it actually got up.*

You might be overestimating the amount of influence writing quality has on the game’s revenue - just a little bit.
ConsiderationDue5002026-01-08 15:27
That's mostly the writer's fault.

i was in army when natlan came out, can someone pls quick explain why people hate it? i recently found time to go through it and i dont see any big differences from other nations
Civil-Cauliflower3772026-01-08 15:33
Some people just love hating things
ConsiderationDue5002026-01-08 15:36
Basically, 5.3 aq was hated whenever it was through Mavuika's characterisation or Capitano's treatment, and it ruined Natlan's reputation forever.
Now combine that with a huge acceleration in powercreep and the worst 5 stars male to 5 stars female ratio since the game release...
Let's just say that some parts of the community got heated real quick.
Wallbalertados2026-01-08 16:18
I was waiting for kinich to have some proper screen time after losing a fight off screen(was really disapointed that he didnt get a cutscene like mualani and kachina) and when he finally got one he wasnt voiced at all dude barely got any screentime in archon quest in his own story quest he was a side character my boy deserved kazuha treatment but got shafted like some npc
notthatjaded2026-01-08 15:39
A lot of people wanted a nation at war with itself, a volcanic hellscape, something darker than what we got, that sort of thing. They expected “real” dragons instead of the saurians. They didn’t like the perceived anachronism of the technology (particularly Mavuika’s bike). They thought Mavuika is a “Mary Sue” character. They were hyped that Capitano would be there and then upset with how he ended up being handled. For the EN players, the fact that it was hit or miss that characters would be voiced due to the strike didn’t help things.
Anyway, it was mostly related to some combination of the above a lot of which boils down to expectations people held that weren’t met.
Good-Commission11872026-01-08 15:45
i see, it makes sense, I guess I just didn't care about how natlan can be more darker during my playthrough so i didnt saw any dif from previous regions and natlan was fine to me
Shahadem2026-01-08 16:06
Mavuika IS a Mary Sue character.

Natlan had a very divisive response in the western fanbase. I personally rate it low myself, so I'll throw out a list of reasons I've heard:
\- Not as dark as expected for a "nation of war." Similarly, people expected more draconic creatures as a "nation of dragons."
\- Some didn't like that the characters racial qualities didn't match where the regions gained inspiration from.
\- The technology. It can feel weird for Natlan to have the advanced technology they did. Unlike Fontaine or Snezhnaya, Natlan was never identified as a tech advanced nation. For me, I felt like there was a lack of technological thematic cohesion. The playable characters' technology is so different from their NPC counterparts compared to previous nations. It is also the most "modern," which can feel weird in a primarily fantasy game.
\- Movement mechanics locked to characters. I don't think it's a big deal, but a lot of people were upset.
\- The AQ is very divisive. It is objectively one of if not the shortest (similar to Inazuma). It has a few English mistranslations that often lead to confusion. A lot of English voiceover was missing during Natlan's release due to VA strike as well.
\- Character design is very different from the design of all previous nations. Obviously whether this is good or bad depends on the player. Mavuika's design is a notorious debate.
\- The exploration is the easiest it had ever been. Some felt the Saurians were clunky (which returns to movement mechanics locked to characters). Less puzzles. Depending on what you like, this is good or bad. Personally, I think they made things too easy.
Overall, the biggest debates you'll see will be about the AQ, technology, and character design.

Nathan Drake?
krustaykrabunfair2026-01-08 15:35
Nathan burned our crops, poisoned our water supply, and spread a plague onto our houses! Who's Nathan?
notthatjaded2026-01-08 15:48
The funny thing is there actually was a traitor named Nathan working for the Fatui among the Sangonomiya troops during the Inazuma AQ.
Namiko-Yuki2026-01-08 17:45
I still rember how everyone joked about all the Japanese names in the encampment then suddenly "Nathan" LMAO
and then turned out he actually was sus.
Shahadem2026-01-08 16:08
Nathan's famous hot dogs!
Actually I have fond memories of eating Nathan's hot dogs. My dad used to work near an arcade that had a Nathan's restaurant and we would sometimes meet him there during his lunch break.
iorveth12712026-01-08 15:36
Reddit and social media in general was never a good indicator of how well or poorly a thing was actually received in practice, Genshin or otherwise.
The people who loved Natlan and Mavuika probably loved Natlan and simply played and enjoyed the game.
The people who hated Natlan and Mavuika cried about it and probably still played the game at the end of the day.
Dangerous_Jacket_1292026-01-09 02:36
Truth. People forget that vocal haters flock to Reddit to have their soapbox moments, but people who like and enjoy things are less likely to seek validation with other people about this opinion.
youarenotthatguybruh2026-01-08 15:41
I love it
Dillion_Murphy2026-01-08 15:42
The reason I hated is because it was talked about as the nation of war, so I was ready for some real badass shit, instead you get there and it’s a South American gay bar.
urmom_gottem692026-01-08 15:45
I don't hate this take, but the reason why I didn't like the archon quest was not only since we got back to back peak fiction and my expectations were very high, but mavuika had no relatable qualities to me. There was also a large immersion break on my end since mc immediately sided with her, and gave capitano's ideas no thoughts. It was only later revealed the consequences of capitano's plan, which mavuika knew the whole time but didn't ever bring it up.
Shahadem2026-01-08 16:13
Capitano's idea was so dumb it wasn't worth considering.
Plus he started out trying to seize the gnosis through violence instead of making an impassioned speech. Maybe trying convincing everyone else that you should be given the gnosis BEFORE trying to use violence to steal it.
urmom_gottem692026-01-08 16:26
In hindsight, yes capitano's idea was dumb, but what I was saying is that with the information that he and everyone other than mavuika had, the plan was sound. Mavuika later revealed the impact of such a plan on the population, which felt like it came out of nowhere. I also didn't like how capitano doubled down for a little even with this information, which is yet another reason why I wasn't a fan of the natlan archon quest compared to sumeru or fontaine
I_love_my_life802026-01-08 15:46
Can we just move on from this... If you like it then cool, good for you..but different people have different opinion...
We are in Nod Krai right now..enjoy that..why do we have to drag Natlan again and again into a pointless conversations...
Way_Moby2026-01-08 15:46
Truth be told, I liked her. I just wish a) we’d gotten her ‘ancient’ costume (the one we saw in the recent comic book event), rather than the leatherdaddy thing. And b) her motorcycle looked more draconic.
In terms of her story, I liked how hands-on she was. Indeed, I appreciate that she, along with Nahida, are the ‘gods’ who seem to care the most for the world around them. The beautiful irony here is that Mavuika is a biological human (rather than some elemental being), and Nahida, while being a legitimate god, is a little baby.
Square-Cable-92512026-01-08 15:46
How so? How is she misunderstood? She's pretty uninteresting and her design is extremely ass (literally) compared to past archons, the community perception of her is what I'd call perfectlyrated
NextLifeAsACat2026-01-08 15:50
For many, the problem wasn’t the exploration but the Archon quest. While I personally didn’t enjoy Natlan as much as other nations, it wasn't bad. I think opinions about Natlan were heavily influenced by the high expectations set by Fontaine and the SAG-AFTRA drama, which affected more than just the lack of English voiceovers.
As for Mauika, she started off with a controversial design that many people didn’t like, the motorcycle, and her character wasn’t as memorable as other Archons. She lacks the flaws that make other Archons more engaging. The most flawed Archon, Furina, is, after all, the most popular.
I do think Mauika personally has more depth; it’s just not as obvious, since she had to appear perfect during a war. I’m hoping to see more of her in the future. They will probably give her more depth in her second story quest, just like they did for Raiden.
Shahadem2026-01-08 16:10
The archon quest was HORRIBLE.
There was absolutely no reason for Lumine to be there as there was nothing for her to do. Heck, in part 1 she wasn't even in the 2nd half.
Actually that has been a huge issue since part 5 of the Inazuma archon quest through the present. It is part of why the archon quests have sucked since then.
Cute_Style24452026-01-08 15:54
The real nation that felt like the nation of war was Inazuma
krustaykrabunfair2026-01-08 16:07
The atmosphere in Inazuma was truly desolate. Ecological disasters and battlefield remnants on 3/5 main islands (not counting Tsurumi). Inazuma being the first region expansion hamstrung its potential. If it had the time and experience that later archon quests had, it would be miles ahead.
Shahadem2026-01-08 16:05
Natlan was largely well received for what it was which is not what it should have been.
Mavuika does not in any way satisfy the concept of archon of war.
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-08 16:45
In any way? When she is the only archon out of seven (columbina included) to do her fucking job, fight for her gnosis and nation and stop the fatui by herself ? What are you saying, she is the archon of war wether you like her design or not
Takaraous2026-01-08 16:05
I think the real issues with Natlan were both uncertainty and expectation.
Up til the first reveal trailer for Natlan, Mihoyo kept the nation under lock and key; we had really no tidbits or drip marketing into the new nation. (Unlike before we always had a tease with a character before a nation released; like Kazuha or Charlotte) When I first heard about Natlan and that it was the fire nation and themed around Spanish/mesoamerican culture; my first thoughts where pretty much “Aztec Mordor”. We of course didn’t get that and we basically got My Little Dinosaur: Friendship is Anime. This uncertainty allowed Mihoyo to do pretty much whatever they wanted with the nation, leaving it more of a blank canvas for them. Also the whole “grumble grumble where is my dark skin grumble grumble!” from *select* Western audiences didn’t help…
Expectations are kind of an obvious one. Fontaine, especially the Archon Quest, are considered by most to be peak Genshin. The best characters, the best story, the best music and best exploration. Unfortunately when you’re at the peak of a mountain, the only direction you can go is down…
Now did I like Natlan? Yes. I loved our Dino-buddy (named him Fuecoco cause I’m original lol). I think Xilonen is one of the most beautiful characters in the game after bombshells like Navia, Lauma and Yae Miko. Mualani and Citlali are two of the funniest characters they’ve ever made and Ifa is arguably my favorite 4-star in the game after best girl Noelle. Natlan has good stuff it’s just people love to concentrate on the bad because misery loves company.
