What do you think is the most heart-wrenching lore in Genshin impact when it's implications are considered too?

What other implications do you think are often ignored in Thunderbird, sun children, and the hospital that make them much more terrifying?

Tsurumi island was crazy for me… but when you read about a lot of the old world civilisations post the funery year… a lot of them are pretty dark…

Enkanomiya and the frostmoon scions of hyperborea are good examples… their societies only course corrected after literal divine intervention

What happened in Gurabad was honestly so messed up if you take time to read the scattered notes during the world quest. Like Fontaine's prophecy feels like a kindness compared to what happened to Gurabad.

ScaredProfit31552026-01-08 16:31

Is there a way I can be able to access the notes?

RevolutionaryFall1022026-01-08 16:32

Genshin wiki

AltairAmlitzer2026-01-08 16:38

This! It's probably best just to read the wiki since the notes are strewn all around the desert and you have to piece together what happened. The wiki also give a more coherent picture of what happened since the notes are compiled. You can also read the Desert Pavilion artifact set since it tells the story of Gurabad and what Liloupar did there.

Zohgho2026-01-08 16:46

I'm going to add that the whole desert is so tragic. The long precursor to Gurabad, the story of King Deshret and Nabu Malikata, is probably my favorite. The Orchard of Pairidaeza has my vote.

Supreme-Machine-V22026-01-08 17:21

I'm actually gonna read over that cause I forgot what was the point of gurabad to begin with (I have bad memory)

almondsadnesses2026-01-09 00:44

Some of this lore is in artifacts too, right?

AltairAmlitzer2026-01-09 01:48

Yup

shiningmuffin2026-01-08 16:38

Okay maybe not the most devastating, but seeing jeht break down crying after her dad and her betrayal after the people she killed for her new mother figure was tough

Shahadem2026-01-08 16:41

Nothing.

Maybe I'm just too fed up with overused cliched tragic backstories.

When I see the occasional character with no backstory whatsoever that character feels novel and new and interesting.

Supreme-Machine-V22026-01-08 17:20

90% of Inazuma's world quests are just depressing as fuck.

nova_51622026-01-08 17:23

It’s not exactly Jeht level, but there was that guy you meet in Natlan who fed rocks to a rock until an Avatar of Lava ate him alive

~~You get a Luxurious Chest for it though, kinda makes it better~~

Inemiset2026-01-08 17:53

Oh I remember him…

Acceptable-Career-622026-01-08 20:13

He died??? I thought he fled cause the lava monster showed up I didn't think it ate him

Purifier1452026-01-08 17:32

Och-Kan's story is pretty fucked up. Dude was literally Uncle Ruckus because of his daddy issues and became a genocidal tyrant because of it.

almondsadnesses2026-01-09 00:43

Natlan world quest lore is actually insane

The three betrayals of Scaramouche.

The first one was a misunderstanding.

The second one was a deception.

The third one was an inevitability.

Life treated him so unfairly that it was almost justified that he went down the Balladeer road.

pontus5552026-01-08 20:13

Two of those are from the exact same guy too.

Yeah, Wanderer really deserves vengance.

It was a misunderstanding.

Ei set Scaramouche free “to live his life as he pleases.” And she thought he was too gentle and kind to be given a harsh position of Shadow Archon of Inazuma.

There’s multiple instances in the story that support this.

And there’s been no CLEAR information on how/why Scara ended up placed in Shakkei Pavillion.

Thoughhh there are multiple instances that point towards the first story.

Yae Miko wanted Scara destroyed because of how dangerous/powerful he was. And exclaimed in outrage when Raiden announced she was “setting him free”.

Scara misunderstood that Raiden viewed him as a failure and not placing a gnosis in him as him being seen as too weak. Which was the opposite. Raiden wanted him to live a free and gentle life.

She intended to do good by him by giving him his golden feather but when he tried to use it Ei was already in the plane of Euthymia and his final option was to show it to Yae to ask for aid. Yae sent help but they arrived too late. This failure to see Ei and the late help contributed to his distrust and to the misunderstanding which made him spiral into becoming kunikuzushi/scaramouche.

Every Dain quest is either sad or depressing

Ok-Temporary-51262026-01-08 19:52

Lots of my friends call her bland and uninteresting, but as someone who read Frostmoon Scion lore since the leak, I greatly appreciate how they execute Lauma. Balancing her disney princess persona with that cult lore is not an easy writing I must say

Affectionate-Bus9272026-01-08 20:06

Thelxie's Fantastic Adventures

Cocoatrice2026-01-08 22:26

Kapatcir and Ruu. That's the saddest story in Genshin.

Crymsyn_Moon2026-01-09 02:10

Thought this was a picture of Oz at first. While not as grand and still somewhat just headcanon, the moment of Fischl getting her vision fit surprisingly well here.

Puzzlehead_Lemon2026-01-10 03:07

Don't know if I'd count it lore, even on a technicality, but the thing that left the biggest mark on me:

In the Fontaine cut scene with Navia on trial with the Oceanids, there all people that died, INCLUDING a guy that you talked too just recently. It's heavily implied that after the death of his wife and child he committed suicide by leaping into the primordial seawater. Few things messed with my head like that.

Enselm2026-01-10 12:03

Furina. Begin forced to keep up a facade and a secret for 500 years without being able to tell no-one since if you do literally everyone will die, combined with the sense of impending doom is horrible to think about. She literally broke down in tears without noticing, and JUST when she thought she could tell someone about it, it turns out it was just a scheme to prove what she was gonna say anyway.
I almost cried when she started calling for the traveler and neuvillette, then just sat there on her throne, probably thinking that everyone was gonna die now that her secret was revealed.

Inevitable-Catch-8692026-01-11 09:42

Definitely the spirits that can't enter the Ley Lines in Natlan, degrading until they're forever lost.

Deaths will always be tragic, especially those of the young and innocent, but total soul destruction after death is worse.
