Doesn't make it any less of a dick move, but it's weird that it happened twice

Except either is canon in genshin.
Lumine was shown as the protag with Paimon in the liyue reveal trailer.

I didn't think what you said was true but your RIGHT! [Lumine](https://youtu.be/5DuZblVxG3I?si=n1k6pJ-W76d4sVsh) is the traveler here! Are there any other videos like this that are Lumine specific and don't have an Aether version? I would love to see other examples.
Namiko-Yuki2026-01-09 17:01
No they stopped after that to avoid confusion.
Having traveler as the designated traveler and Lumi as the twin, to make sure during trailers that people can have a clear understanding.
If they alternate between Aether and Lumine as traveler a lot of players will be going crazy about "omg abyss twin shows up next patch" due to getting confused whether Lumine is being shown in traveler role or twin role.
Unless it is made obvious with keeping Paimon in the same shots, but even that would lead to a bunch of people going "OMG Paimon is with the abyss twin wtf is gonna happen next patch"
And yes I know this sounds stupid, but honestly go through some posts people make here or on twitter and you will soon realize that a lot of people will 100% get completely confused if Lumine was used in promo material.
NoOrganization60252026-01-09 16:31
that video literally is the one that proved why they stuck to one mc in promos for consistency. what sucks though is even the in game art shows just one traveler lol
TheLuiz2122026-01-09 16:38
What makes you say that?
Nunu56172026-01-09 16:22
The way I see it? They just usually stick with one MC in advertising media for consistency and avoiding potential confusions
KilianZer2026-01-09 16:26
True but in hsr they alternate between them instead of just one.
KojimaHayate2026-01-09 16:28
HSR MC are the same person, you can alternate between the two and never be confused. If you alternate Lumine and Aether, you'd have to think "which one is the abyss sibling right now?"
lostn2026-01-10 04:17
it's usually quite obvious. Like for instance the recent dain quest had Lumine with dark energy around her hands.
lostn2026-01-10 04:16
they don't do this with HSR though. Both get their fair share of screen time in promos.
Nunu56172026-01-10 06:11
Genshin MCs are two seperate individuals
HSR is the same person
lostn2026-01-10 23:46
have you done 3.7?
Nunu56172026-01-11 00:15
Yes? When has there been 2 Existing trailblazers in the story?
Meanwhile Lumine and Aether are 2 seperate characters that swap roles depending on your initial choice
Xirtie2026-01-10 10:36
Because Caelus and Stelle are literally just the same person, so they're more flexible in marketing.
lostn2026-01-10 23:46
they're not though... if you played 3.7's story..
Xirtie2026-01-11 05:13
I know that part, I just avoided it to not spoil anyone. And right now, it's probably not relevant yet, so my point still stands.
xd_ZelnikM2026-01-09 16:28
Dialogue is neutral enough that it doesn't really matter. Sure, you have Lumine flowers in the Chasm or Jeht's love for women, but dialogue is done in the way that both can be a protagonist without much of a fuss

\- Picking one Traveler to be the hero and the other to be the villain for consistent advertising: Annoying, but understandable.
\- Using that same Traveler for in-game event artwork, like the banner for [Tournament of Glory in Bloom](https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Tournament_of_Glory_in_Bloom): Pretty darned unfair.
Trailers and advertisements, it's fair to maintain some kind of consistency. But in-game, each player has their own Traveler that they picked, and the artwork should reflect that Traveler.
lostn2026-01-10 04:16
which one is the canon villain in odyssey?
TheLuiz2122026-01-10 04:21
Alexios is the canon villain. While you can spare him, the books canonize that Kassandra killed him.
Xirtie2026-01-10 10:35
It's 2026. Both MCs are canon.
Aether as MC and Lumine as Sibling are purely for consistency in marketing. Otherwise, the thought that the other one is non-canon has always been false.
