Why is the Genshin community so toxic and judgmental
I started playing Genshin about a year and a half ago, and it's been one of the first games that I've really enjoyed playing. Since I'm a casual completely f2p player, I don't have the funds to pull for all the meta characters, so I just find myself pulling for characters that I like in terms of design and playstyle.
For the first year that I've played Genshin, I mained Lyney, who I got at early pity on his 5.2 banner. However, I have had numerous occasions where I have had people tell me to quit Genshin and to play a better character because ""He's so off meta" ,"Charged attack playstyle is so boring", "Arlecchino/Mavuika is better", "He's so lame". At first, I thought this was just one person being toxic because they didn't get him, but I've had numerous people shame me for playing off meta.
When the Nod-Krai trailer released, I immediately knew that I needed Flins, so I used my Nod Krai savings to get him. Just recently, I've had two times where people still shamed me. One time, I came into a world to farm flowers for him, and this person shamed me for having "Bad taste", slut shamed me for playing Flins even though I don't play him cuz I find him hot (not that he isn't, but you know), told me to get a life, and kicked me out of their world. Yesterday, this dude came into my world and asked if he could farm some crystalflies, to which I said yes. When he saw that I was playing Flins, he shamed me for being a "meta-slave", told me that "slaves like you have no taste and ruin Genshin", and logged off..
Why can't people just accept and let people play who they want to play instead of jumping to conclusions and being toxic to others? Is it really so hard. It's experiences like this that make me not want to coop in Genshin anymore, even despite the good experiences I've had with it (exchanging Cyno jokes, jumping around aimlessly, searching for 30 minutes for an apple tree because we didn't know the interactive map existed, etc.)
Does anyone else have a similar experience with Genshin coop or is it just me?

4. Never play co-op outside of people you know personally (optional)
Plenty of jerks on reddit but in game has been chill.
My advice? Just ignore them, block if needed, and move on. There are plenty of people in this community who don't care who you main and are just here to have fun. They're more worth interacting with
I haven't had experiences like this before, not that I co-op often but when I do people rarely even care about the characters damage and just talk about "he is so hot" or "she is so pretty" as the reason to pull.
I get that meta players can be annoying when they start shaming characters or going on about how they plan their pulls down to the constellations and don't waste pulls on characters that wont fit their teams. But they usually stop when you let them know you don't care that much about calculations.
I would suggest maybe try finding co-op communities or discords so you have likeminded people to play with since random co-op I guess can be pretty risky with who you could run into and how they could act.
Long story short, if you are on America server, I won’t ever judge you for not being meta and I’ll just be in awe of the cool characters you have that I don’t bc I started playing in 5.3. I also pull characters for the same reason but the characters I like happen to be meta bc they all started coming out when I was playing so not a lot of old banners. I’ll happily co-op with you whenever :)
You are also free to mat farm in my world, I’ve been very lazy lately so I have not been mat farming and someone should reap the benefits!
Like, really big.
And with any community that reaches the size of this, it's only natural that the toxic side of that community will be equally larger.
But I haven’t met any ever.
Not to say this community is good it’s just okay. It’s usually the other way where people hate you if you’re not casual.
Those people just sound mad at the world and taking it on the first person they meet.
If you want to play in coop, just try playing with actual friends instead of some strangers
Social media though. Yikes.
Though nobody told me anything when I was farming with my DPS Rosaria, so I assume EU people don't really care...
(the only commentary I got on my Flins was a compliment for having built him well :) )
I don’t understand
But then again, it also depends on the platform you're engaging in. I mostly use in game, Reddit and Discord to talk about Genshin. I'm sure that if I was a Twitter user my experience might not be so pleasant
And people talk a lot about meta standings. But I think some people miss that it's not personal. Meta discussions are about looking at (or at least attempting to) an objective assessment of a characters' capabilities. But most people who discuss meta or are involved in it really don't care how people play their accounts, heck, many meta aware people *don't* pull according to the meta and just play who they enjoy. They just like theory crafting how to make the best of that character, or just talking about it in general. I'll spend 30 minutes describing all the ways Xiao is shit and then turn around and vertically invest into him, I don't care
Well, seriously, I did encounter very few rude people telling others who to play and insult everyone else for selecting the same character in co-op domains. I didn't engage with them and just played my way anyway (mostly because I play on PS5 and typing is painfully slow and cumbersome). They then got frustrated and left by themselves (unless they're the host).
You play who and how you want in co-op. Just be careful not being a dead weight to others like selecting a hydro character to fight hydro-resistant enemies and you're fine.
I play with two friends and I usually help them chose wich characters to pull: I have Ineffa and Lauma, a friend of mine has Flins (he is so badass DPS) and the other friend has Nefer and is currently saving for the moon goddess (tbf I'll probably pull her too).
We don't shame each other, we make teams with the characters we have to do weekly bosses and normal farming temples etc.
I think you just got salty people who missed the 50/50 and can't cope with the frustration.
Don't take it personal, block anyone like that.
my world, i let some in quite a lot, and if they dont tell me why they joined within the first minute or go somewhere without saying anything, they get kicked
(though I imagine most would say something like "oh I'm not toxic at all lol")
Genshin is a big game with a big community, and there's always bound to be *someone* with a shitty opinion and no hesitation to share it. I'd say part of learning to enjoy your hobby - *any* hobby - is learning how to filter that kind of bs out.
The way they satisfy themself varies, but I assure you that you got rage baited.
They won't think twice about how you feel; they just want to satisfy themselves.
>When the Nod-Krai trailer released, I immediately knew that I needed Flins
Were you pressured to think that you "need" him? Or do you mean you just want him?
Don't feel pressured to do anything. This is a game; you should have fun and ignore others
Because social networks, algorithms and short videos made people's brain more intolerant to differences. "If you aren't with me then you are my enemy" kind of thought. Genshin is no exception.
That said...
There is something funny our brains like to do, that is focusing on the negative experiences. Depending on how you are doing mentally (with anxiety being rampant these days), all your brain needs is a couple of bad matches with annoying people to mess up your day.
The most annoying occurance I run into regularly are russian players who refuse to speak English, but that's about it. 😄
Flins is actually loved by most of thr community, in part due to his VA who is an absolute unit and never miss a chance to troll to heavens and back Cyno's VA.
And even Itto / Raiden / Mavuika mains, who each get shit shower for different reasons in different part of thr community are still not triggering insult and instead gimmicks mostly.
Unless you're playing Qiqi in Stygian Onslaught, you shouldnt need a rain check.
