It took a while, but it's safe to say that Hoyo addressed mostly everything that was written in this article 3 years ago, whether it was for the better or for worse
I decided to come back to the Gamespot article that was written a little over 3 years ago to check the answers Hoyo gave to the questions regarding Genshin's plans for the future since I had a feeling that Hoyo kinda addressed a lot of what was asked here. I then added what **I think** were the actual features/changes they made in relation to the answers they gave to each of these questions, so some of these are my personal take on them.
Overall, while the answers at the time were more typical corporate answers, and that Genshin was gonna need a lot of time to develop these things, I think it's safe to say that Hoyo has managed to address most of what was said here, regardless of whether the community sees these changes as good or bad for the game.
What do you think about the direction Genshin has taken since this article dropped? I definitely remember the community being split about the things that were said back then.

New features are often brought about by some other struggling game forced to introduce it which then forces Genshin to also introduce it for parity because people complain that the other game has it so why don't we?
And ultimately no company is perfect. But just because there's one specific thing someone wanted and they haven't put it in the game, doesn't mean they are bad developers.
The base game of genshin is great and the continue to try and keep it so consistently so.
Every new mechanic in the overworld and the new environments are great and keep getting better.
Considering the base game keeps being so good I can excuse the lack of qols, especially those related to end game stuff.
But sadly some people just want to skip or ignore everything else the game has to offer, which is fair of course but like...it's still ignorant to claim the devs don't do anything just because they prioritize the rest of the game that you ignore.
The ones who only play for combat and ignore the story and exploration and only do it as a means to and end for more characters.
Like from what I've seen, most people who don't focus on that aspect alone, tend to enjoy the game more.
The ones who only focus on the end game, and the 'qols' that they want for it like the skip button to skip story for primos, loadouts which are only usable for that small percent wanting to grind hours in end game, are the ones who end up feeling most miserable lol.
>The rules lf gameplay [are more impactful] than how strong a character is
We went from Hyperbloom meta to Hydro meta to Nightsoul meta & currently in Lunar meta. Shill mechanic is a necessary evil to reduce powercreep. Make sure every characters/team have their specific niche instead of "this character is the strongest DPS" or "that character is the strongest support"
No other region has this many "haters" that it even turned into a common description everyone knows.
So stop lying to yourself.
Sales did go down hard (except for your yearly Archon release), average viewer count of Genshin Streamers dropped and it even stopped being the talk of the town in the Gacha community.
And as I said, that the term "Natlan haters" exist is already proof enough that I am right.
It wouldn't exist if there weren't so many players dissatisfied with that patch.
Like?
>average viewer count of Genshin Streamers dropped
Genshin streamers? Lmao what, aint no way you are using streamer view count lol
>stopped being the talk of the town in the Gacha community.
It's literally still the biggest gacha game by all metrics
>the term "Natlan haters" exist is already proof enough that I am right.
The term that exists for every nation proves you are right? Sure buddy.
Provide some actual proof stop with the cope
>Sales did go down hard (except for your yearly Archon release),
Again no proof.
My guess is that they will expand the spiral abyss at some point. Originally it was worth 600 primos, then became 800 while IT was 600. Now IT with Lunar difficulty is worth 1000 primos. Which means I think we're going to see a F13 or something similar to it added to spiral abyss to make it 1000 primos.
*Looks over to durin*
Maybe something they'll do once the game is 'done' story wise, as they'll have the dev time.
(And I say this as someone who only missed Unreconciled Stars from the limited events that are important)
Goddamn the shilling in Abyss, IT, and especially SO have been annoying AF.
No shit. The game shilled the fuck out of pyro so much, they gave it 2 reactions that not only benefit from every damage modifier in the game but also a direct 1.5/2x damage amp. Every other reaction (and their archetypes as a result) only picked one damage modifier (only Catalyze has this benefit but they don't have that juicy damage amp) or the other and had to play catchup only for Mavuika and Mualani to show what happens when units designed to maximize that 2x bonus could do. Reminder: it took transformative reactions 3 patch updates (1.6 EM buff, 5.2 reaction multiplier buffs, and new Lunar reactions) to stay relevant without being turned into recolored Superconduct reactions.
Their numerical balancing was wrecked right from the start despite having a reaction system that could've avoided that.
>However, in Genshin Impact, the rules of gameplay are more impactful than how strong a character is. Therefore, new battlegrounds, new challenge levels, or even new team builds, all have potential to bring new life to existing content.
Weird how hp inflation was included in this reply when that's the very thing that discourages new team comps and is the most numerically polarizing factor about the game. No amount of skill will ever save a team that has an actual DPS (not the sheet DPS) that's less than what the timer and shill allow.
Outside of that one example, yeah, the shill does force you to get the newest team comps, for better or worse.
>For us, there are other ways to increase the fun for players rather than simply increasing the complexity of game rules.
That's fulfilled by the Lunar reactions. They're basically better versions of the existing ones without needing to relearn them. Sucks for the old reactions they replace but a gacha game's gotta gacha game.
>Players will come to discover their own ways of developing builds. That is the fun of this game.
Ehhhhh coming from the game that butchered their own elemental reactions from day 1 and continue to do so (look at Freeze), that's kinda fucked, especially when newer comps are more tightly dependent on specific characters than the rules they talk about. Escoffier and Skirk are their biggest offenders for this. And Lunar Crystallize will be next, a replacement to one of the most fucked reactions in the game and it's locked behind 2 new units. At least Ningguang will finally get something out of this.
Yeah no, the short "Event quest recollection" is a very poor substitute. Why not cut together a nice video with cutscenes from the event and some voiceover by Albedo or Dain or whatever (or some text inserts if money is really so tight for this smol indy developer) and put that in the game (or link to it).
Let's hope they really make all major event stories permanent in the future like they did for Natlan summer and apparently the upcoming lantern rite. Just a shame that Hu Taos lantern rite story happened before this change ...
The only old units that remain in the lineup are the support characters, unless they're replaced by newer, stronger versions like Shenhe and Escoffier.
Genshin Impact should start updating all the old units, both in terms of damage to follow the Stat Inflation of boss and the appearance of the character too.
I find it a truly awful way to update the appearance of old characters solely through skins, half of which are paid.
As for the endgame, I'd like to see something a bit more like HSR, which blends the various playstyles through different mechanics.
I'm okay with having seasons featuring Lunar and Nightsoul, as long as they regularly swap out the playstyles and don't force Lunar into every version.
See things like Hexerei/Liyue Special Buff, or Updated Pneuma Ousia/Sumeru Special Buff.
A mix of all, basically.
As for theater, what bothers me is the randomness and being forced to play characters you don't own and whose mechanics you don't know.
I have nothing against limiting character usage or having a limited roster, but randomness isn't fun at all.
And will not talk about the last, it's was a endgame make for whales...
I haven't 36 starred in years, and can't clear theater beyond hard. Stygian is also a no-go beyond the primos.
They should have implemented something like what starrail recently did and lower the difficulty for primogem rewards in these modes. And introduce harder modes with cosmetic currency as a reward.
