Is Zibai unnecesary?? in lore terms of lore and gameplay.

Moon Carver could easily fulfill the same role attributed to Zibai, because he is already an ancient, powerful entity tied to the moon and Liyue’s past, there was no need to introduce or elevate another lunar figure, since Moon Carver naturally fits that space as a representative of the pre-Celestia forces and the old order that existed before humans took over.

He also fits perfectly with the Geo element and even with lunar reactions, after all he is the Moon Carver, yet he was discarded simply for not being a waifu, or at least that’s how it felt after seeing the drip marketing and the special program.

If you literally translate his name from chinese it's "The Perfected Lord who Carves the Moon and Builds the Sun". It just got shortened in the translation.

Are there mentions that actually explain the origin of his name? I can't quite remember and the wiki doesn't give too much input.

1. Moon carver name doesn't actually has main importance on the moon. His CN name is "The Perfected Lord who Carves the Moon and Builds the Sun", which, to me, puts a lot more emphasis on actions of carving and building, and uses sun and moon as objects of great duality (perfected lord is a title related to xian, which adepti are modeled after, so nothing there either)

2. We technically don't even know how old he is, as most adepti. Oldest we know of is that he was present during Archon war

3. Humans already existed (as far as we know) during Morax's earliest mention, and I doubt moon carver is older than him

4. As everyone already stated, zibai was already present during 1.0, just without literal name

Thank you for the explanation, I’m just starting to get to know the deeper lore, but what you mention is quite convincing. So is Moon Carver more like a ‘grand-sounding name’ or a translation mistake? I honestly didn’t know that the White horse adepti had been mentioned before

Not mistranslation per say. It is more like they shortened his name, thus kinda losing some context. That said, it is more ground sounding (to me), kinda how mountain shaper, who I don't expect to have actually shaped all mountains.

For horse adepti, first mention was in moonlit bamboo forest book. Highly recommend watching (fan) adaptation of it from hoyofair few years back (can just google name of the book with hoyofair added on YouTube). She was also mentioned in another book that released mid Natlan, iirc. But don't remember the name of that one

Does this mean that Moon Carver is... a big, fat fake? We got the story about how Cloud Retainer legitimately retained some clouds at one point. She's legit. Mountain Shaper may or may not have shaped some mountains; I don't think we've heard anything decisive either way.

But unless Moon Carver was part of the project to create the Firmament, he had no part in carving the visible sun or moon - and unless he's Nibelung himself, he certainly didn't create the original, now-destroyed moons (and probably not the real sun, either).

I think it's likely that he wasn't directly connected to the moons, but maybe dene something related to. Alternitevely, since it both Sun AND Moon, it might be more related to daylight cycle or something

As others said, she was mentioned in the game before. That aside, I'm upset that she barely has horse motifs, despite being literally called White Horse Adeptus. If they wanted to add another woman, fine, but couldn't they add more horse stuff to her?

I think folks hoping for Uma Musume were doomed from the start.

The human-form Adepti we've met do not have animal ears or tails, (Some half-adepti do, like Ganyu and Yanfei, but it's not clear they're even capable of changing shape as full Adepti do.) Of Zhongli, Xiao, and Xianyun, the first two look completely human - not a trace of bird or dragon (or dragon-qulin, or whatever) to be found. Xianyu's hands are sort of taloned and her clothes are kind of bird-y, but that's about it. (Honestly, I'd say Shenhe's getup looks more bird-y than Xianyun's, and she's not even an Adeptus.) I guess there's Fujin, too, whose eyes have a kind of fish-eyed look and whose dress is vaguely fish-y. Mountain Shaper's and Moon Carver's human NPC models were also devoid of any animal traits.

Folks gotta face facts: Adepti may be Illuminate Beasts, but they take on perfectly human forms. Zibai is just continuing the trend.

Never said I hoped for Uma Musume, just for horse MOTIFS. Xianyun to me has enough similarities to her bird form, including feather-like parts of her design. Zibai, on the other hand, just has horse sounds in her gameplay and I think some little horse jumping imagery? Also in her gameplay. Not design.

Zhongli has scales on his clothes, if you look closely. Zibai doesn't have anything that could even remotely indicate her being related to horses. I just think the design could use some work, she looks like a random woman to me.

Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper don't count because they literally use copy-pasted basic male NPC models, please be serious 😭
