I tried to use Google translate into his lang but the Russian lang was converted into "???" characters. I saw ppl type jp and cn clearly though, do I have a glitch?

Probably. I've had people text me in Russian and I even have people with Russian nicks in my friendlist

Yes, Russia is in Asia, Asia isn't just Japan china and korea

It's nice to know. Thank you for sharing it. Good luck on your studies
Jnliew2026-01-12 20:34
"Russian" "Asian language"
In certain circles, even extremist Russian ones, that'd be considered a TRUTH NUKE (half joking)
But yeah, Russian is very much a European language, why did you assume Asian?
Asian languages that use Cyrillic would just be Mongolia and most of Central Asia (Mongolic and Turkic languages) and Siberian natives
Helpful-Throat-43412026-01-12 19:14
does it have links to sanskrit then?
TinyInsu2026-01-12 19:21
Well, Sanskrit's original language is Proto-Indo-Iranian which comes from Proto-Indo-European. So yeah, they share practically the same roots
Helpful-Throat-43412026-01-12 20:49
Yeah but scripts r so dang different
MaeveOathrender2026-01-12 21:22
A lot of languages that developed out of Proto-Indo-European use the Latin script, but not all of them. The language family started developing before writing came about, so the similarities are much more audible than visible.
katbelleinthedark2026-01-12 19:34
Sanskrit and most European languages come from the same proto-language.
Helpful-Throat-43412026-01-12 20:49
Does that proto language still exist?
alvenestthol2026-01-12 20:56
That proto language explains why mother is *mātṛ* in Sanskrit, and brother is *bhrā́tar* in Sanskrit, while it is much less likely that basic words like these got loaned across the continent after the fact
katbelleinthedark2026-01-12 21:21
Yesn't? There is no record of that language but some of its features were reconstructed from existing Indo-European languages.
It's not like a language that one can learn and use though. It exists for research purposes.
addstar12026-01-12 21:39
It exists in the same way dinosaurs are still around because we have birds.
We see a bunch of things that trace back up to it, but none of those things are it. Languages themselves are very dynamic. You can go look at how different Middle English is from present day, and then compare that with Old English. They are different enough that while English itself exists, Old English doesn't.
Proto-Indo-European is a derived language that is able to trace back words in a number of languages to a common origin, and gives us an idea on how each languages evolved over time. Proto-Indo-European doesn't have a writing system, at least that we know about and survived. It's estimated to be between 6,000 and 8,000 years old.

I'm surprised they tried to text in English. I'm so used to the Russians on EU server not caring at all about that.
yoshi_in_black2026-01-12 19:16
I played a game in Milliastra recently where I was probably the only English speaking player, because the rest chatted in Russian on the side.
LandLovingFish2026-01-12 22:08
I played in a spanish group once and it was sweet they didn't mind i could barely spanish
Sunny--C2026-01-12 22:41
Spanish speaking group or Spanish from Spain? Not trying to be a dick, it's just I've seen people mix or confuse those.
Most Spanish speaking people (from LATAM, Idk about people from Spain) find it cool that people try to learn our language, so most of us will not mock or belittle and instead will encourage people who we see are genuinely trying, and as long as we understand you (and we will do our best to understand) we don't care if you make mistakes.
LandLovingFish2026-01-13 03:09
Spanish speaking group, I'm on America so i'm going to guess my side of the world haha
Sunny--C2026-01-13 03:56

GetFiltered2026-01-12 19:37
With how many Russian players are there on the EU server, it's just a default assumption people have that if not everyone, then at least someone in the lobby will understand them. And with the population spread across 11 different time zones, there's no escape, you'll always be running into Russians in co-op.
If Hoyo could go back in time, they'd likely just give Russia its own server. It's impossible to overstate just how hugely it blew up here, it couldn't have been foreseen. The other Hoyo games are nowhere near as big of a deal in Russia.
throwway852352026-01-12 19:39
But 90% of Russians are in like 2 hours worth of time zones.
PandiTati2026-01-12 19:47
And some of the rest play on Asian server because it's closer
GetFiltered2026-01-12 20:03
Some do, but low ping doesn't make nearly as much difference in Genshin as does in other online games, so not many people are trading the benefits of a server that they share with all their countrymen for it.
PandiTati2026-01-12 20:26
If you say low ping doesn't matter then you never played with low ping. The average online time for server also matters if you play coop often, you much rather find players to play with if they live in a timezone close to yours.
I *am* russian, and the absolute majority of my far eastern (+8 - +12 UTC) friends prefer Asian server over European. Open any russian forum with the question "which server to choose if I live in the Far East" and you'll see Asian.
My friend after moving from Kamchatka to Moscow had to create another account on the European server because the low ping was unbearable that much. Talk about ping not making a difference. Luckily she was F2P
GetFiltered2026-01-12 20:41
I'm not saying it doesn't matter, I'm saying it doesn't matter as much as it does in most other online games. Competitive FPS games for example are literally unplayable with high ping, you'll just ruin your mood and those of your teammates. Here it's manageable, your abilities and inflicted damage will have a slight delay, but that's about it. Everything will still register, the enemies will move normal and so will you, no teleporting or rubberbanding. Not pleasant, but tolerable, especially if you're not a sweaty meta player, and most people aren't.
PandiTati2026-01-12 20:50
Yes, exactly, most of the people don't care about endgame because a lot of genshin players do not play any other games or just generally casual gamers. And you comparing their troubles with ping in genshin with other more competitive games will not mean a thing.
"Damn I got hit by a brick"
"Well, someone doesn't have an arm so you're ok" ahh comparison.
But no, Neuvilette's droplets are not spawning, or Mavuika is not melting burst or not landing it at all, etc, because of the ping shenanigans are already considerable problems even for the overworld.
CherryLeafy1012026-01-12 22:05
I'm on EU living somewhere with terrible signal and hate ping issues. I constantly have to open the book or map mid-fight to let the game catch up without losing loads of time and/or getting dropkicked into next week, then carry on fighting. 😑
zKyri2026-01-12 20:32
It's quite crucial for dire clears at lower investment, basically you need to brute force with cons because perfect rotations get extremely frustrating
GetFiltered2026-01-12 20:43
Sure, but ask yourself how many people it's actually going to affect? A fraction of a fraction of the playerbase clears Dire. Your average Joe doesn't even think about concepts like rotations, they just swap characters when they feel like it and use whatever abilities are off CD.
zKyri2026-01-12 20:49
Nah I know, I play at 150ms and it plays good enough on everything but dire where it gets stupidly noticeable
PandiTati2026-01-12 20:54
Now imagine 300+ ping because this is how it is on average in the Far East with European server and vise versa. For my friend it was ~900 for a few days before she gave up and made a new account
Lazlo23232026-01-12 20:41
Many even in western part of Russia play on Asian server for some reason even with worse ping.
PandiTati2026-01-12 20:59
Because for some it's the first game of such kind and they started playing in Asia by accident, some choose Asian server to have new content earlier, some have friends on Asian so they chose it to play with them. The belief "Asian servers have better drop chances" is also there and some actually trust it. Different reasons
GetFiltered2026-01-12 19:56
More like 75%. But when you're talking about the 140 million people country with a disproportionately high amount of Genshin players, even those other 25% are very noticeable.
I'm from the European part of the country myself, but most of my gaming sessions fall on the nighttime and I genuinely don't feel any difference in how many Russian speaking players I see in Genshin. Be it 5 PM or 5 AM, it's Cyrillic galore either way.
KamelYellow2026-01-12 19:56
In my experience (and I have PLENTY), most Russians will continue yelling at you in russian even if they know for a fact you don't understand them, that's the problem. I have no issue with people speaking their language between eachother, but spamming it at others out of pure ego and lack of education is extremely obnoxious. Especially nowadays, since translation is super easy and takes seconds
Cyberpunque2026-01-12 20:28
then why don't you translate to russian
KamelYellow2026-01-12 20:41
I usually do. Doesn't exactly fix the issue of basic etiquette
GetFiltered2026-01-12 20:28
It's definitely not just your experience, I'm often seeing that attitude from within as well. But for what it is worth, you're likely meeting many Russians who speak English and you're not even aware of it, the same way how right now I have no clue where you're from.
KamelYellow2026-01-12 20:48
True, at least on social media. In games I tend to ask people where they're from and it's usually easy to spot specific accents over voice chat. Not that there's anything wrong with having one of course, I have a fairly obvious accent myself, but I think anyone from Eastern Europe can more or less discern them
Icy_Ad58582026-01-12 21:33
Most of the playerbase in Russia are children and young teens. English teaching is often neglected in schools and there is propaganda all over the life. They either don't care or find mocking you funny. Sorry :'c
Egoistic_Animehead2026-01-12 22:13
I am always speaking English. Mostly just to interact with foreigners more. (And they're usually a bit more thankful for stuff)
floricel_1122026-01-12 22:25
Was playing buckshot roulette in miliastra with a russian and we got to chatting because I requested to partner up for the co op achievement needed for the slime hat.
He didn't know english very well, but still did his best to type in english. He also didn't know buckshot roulette very well, so I did my best to Razor teach him what each item did. He told me he didn't understand much of it, but appreciated me trying to teach him, and I in turn appreciated joining me
Very pleasant encounter, overall

people before google translator be like
aescepthicc2026-01-12 19:57
Is there an in-built translator in genshin chats? I've been wishing for it for the past 5 years, honestly. It would be so useful in MW especially for people on mobile bc you can't use separate translator apps as easily as on PC
Nero_PR2026-01-12 20:14
I know some games do have built-in translator for their chat. First time I run into one was playing Sky Children of Light. It is the type of tech that considerably enhances interactivity in your community as you keep the player from running away from foreign interactions while keep them inside with tools provided by the game itself to solve the issue.
Saw some cool interactions in that game. Of course, there was the usual grieving and bullying though. There were a large amount of concerning messages from what seemed to be children who weren't in a good headspace at all. (you can report said messages though for moderation to try and reach out)
aescepthicc2026-01-12 20:26
From my experience in genshin chats in MW, everyone just tried their best playing the games and cooperating. I play social games like Mafia, and it's been sad when some players were inevitably excluded from conversation because there's simply no time to translate. Either russian-only players were not enjoying the game fully when everyone else talked english to make english-only players feel included. Or english-only players were in that position when everyone chatted in Russian. But everyone were trying their best to cooperate. Some were even trying to translate player's nicknames to share info, because they have no Cyrillic keyboard and couldn't read it. I feel like not everything is lost in games like that
Nero_PR2026-01-12 20:42
As long as there are emotes and stickers, players will find a way to communicate and connect.
aescepthicc2026-01-12 20:45
Let me check, is it an argument against implementing the in-game translation for chats? Because clearly emotes and stickers are not enough to communicate, otherwise posts like OP and lots of commenters complaining about different language usage would not be there
Lubinski642026-01-12 20:37
Are there any games that have that?
Jaggedrain2026-01-12 20:47
Where winds meet has it
tachycardicIVu2026-01-12 21:01
FFXIV has a handy translator tool that, while somewhat limited, can come in clutch occasionally. There’s a preselected menu of words/phrases and when you click or select that particular option, when you put it in chat it shows as whatever language the person reading it knows. So if you type in like “I seem to have misplaced my keyboard” (this is a bit of a meme phrase imo), then someone whose system language is in Japanese will see the Japanese equivalent on their screen. It’s great for skill names in particular - some of them vary quite a bit between languages and so just saying “oh just use Asylum or Assize” won’t always be helpful in chat straight up. Like in random dungeons you don’t know your party’s languages so if you suddenly notice your tank forgot their stance you can let the know “<Grit>” (or the equivalent) to quickly let them know “hey you forgot to use Grit.”

9 out of 10 EU players are russian it feels like
IthiDT2026-01-12 19:53
Well, Russian is the 3rd most popular language on Steam after Chinese and English, and the majority of Chinese and English users are in Asia and NA respectively. It is also spoken not only in Russia, but in all of the former Soviet states to various degree. Several of the geographically Asian post-Soviet countries also mostly use the European servers (Kazakhstan, Asian parts of Russia, Georgia, Armenia) when it comes to video games.
Plus due to how the video game market formed here, the majority of gamers are on PC. If the console version still has its separate servers, you won't find as many Russian speakers there on EU, we are almost all on PC/mobile (mostly PC). Which is kind of the opposite to a lot of the Western EU.
randyoftheinternet2026-01-12 20:11
There are a lot of Cyrillic languages, and Russian itself is huge. They also rarely have any server except European ones
Il_Dottore_Snezhnaya2026-01-12 20:19
Да
kakao_kletochka2026-01-12 21:53
Or not. For example, once I have been playing hide and seek event, and there were two players chatting madly in Russian, and I just pretended I don't understand, and the 3rd player was writing in English and was really frustrated. Then they went "Ugh, again Russians", and the first two players went: "Erm, I am from Kazakhstan", "I am from from Ukraine". So I had to come out as guilty and only one Russian, lol. Asked them to tone down their chatting and respect our foreign friend, so they continued in kinda broken English. I think Western players tend to forget that Russian language is spoken in many CIS/exCIS countries as the second language or as one of the mother languages, and have the same function as English language - let people from different countries to communicate in the language all sides know better than English.
Honestly, I don't know why nowadays teens don't want to learn languages or to it very poorly. But they can continue on, because I will always have a job just because I know some English and they don't. 😈

As an aside, looking at your avatar, seems this is a perfect time to put Duolingo to good use
EllipticAeon2026-01-12 19:42
I actually used it to learn jp, before they switched to energy, which is quite demotivating to play because I can barely do 3 lessons without this running out. Imagine energy (25) like 60 resin everyday to use but the claiming cost isn't reduced
Boysenberry01272026-01-12 19:49
what was it like before energy?
headphonesnotstirred2026-01-12 19:55
it was a heart system, meaning theoretically if you actually knew the language (beyond what Duolingo can feasibly teach you) you could go forever since hearts were only lost on mistakes
compared to energy, which has a higher cap but depletes on every question (i enjoy it because i don't actually know French so i kinda suck, but i get why others don't like it)
RikiAsher2026-01-12 20:06
You could try the Renshuu App

the EU server has a lot of Russian (or at least some language that uses Cyrillic) speakers, and they are the only ones there that don't bother to use English, like, I can assure that most of the players on the EU server speak languages like German, French, Polish, Dutch, Spanish, etc. and yet, they never text in their native languages, knowing that they would rarely match with someone that knows it, so they try to use English, even when it's bad. But these Russians - they don't give a slightest damn, you match with them and they just start typing with cyrillic, and you have no idea what is going on. And it happens extremely often
LadyWithGun2026-01-12 20:09
"they never text in their native languages" Sorry but this isnt true at all.. I joined coop artifacts farm for a few weeks to faster lvl up friendship for Nefer and boy I thought I was gonna learn every french word by the time I got her to lvl 10
Meffle__2026-01-12 20:10
I co-op a lot and literally never saw anyone speaking to me in other languages than English or Cyrillic languages (likely Russian)
LadyWithGun2026-01-12 20:13
Weird cos I even got some jp and chinese. Spanish for sure. I dont even do coop often only to lvl friendship on my new character.
BandicootFar41262026-01-12 20:25
I'm French and you can argue that French is one of the most spoken languages after English, with Spanish (in term of countries), so it's not unlikely people have studied it in class.
But well English imposed itself as the world lingua franca so English speakers don't bother learning or practicing another language and everybody should speak it unfortunately.
LadyWithGun2026-01-12 20:36
I have nothing against ppl speaking their own languages and I like how french sounds (wish I could learn it but only choices I had were english or german) so I never mind that. Yes most of the time I wont understand what they are saying and I will write in chat that I cant understand them and if they need something from me they will have to find a way to communicate their issue I'm afraid bc its out of my hands by that point.
soctamer2026-01-12 20:15
> or at least some language that uses Cyrillic
no, anytime you see someone who refuses to speak English, it's 100% specifically a Russian. It's kind of like American tourists who expect English no matter what country they visit, except English actually is kind of common everywhere. Russians just expect everyone to know Russian for no good reason and they expect everyone to accommodate their lack of language skills.
I've also seen Russians who assume everyone who speaks English is American, even though they play on the EU server and it makes no sense for a whole lot of Americans to be there, so they also get competitive over whose language should be considered a "universal" one. Even though there's really no competition there and the English language doesn't even belong to the US technically. It also doesn't help that most of these Russians are children and the propaganda machine is working overtime in their schools.

I'm sure they also told Reddit that they met a non-Russian that didn't speak Russian well enough. You might find it if you look... although I suspect they didn't because oddly, it's only ever English speaking people that need to point things like this out. They probably just went about their day without thinking it was worthy of telling Reddit about. English speaking people could take that onboard as a life-lesson perhaps.
ashitanoai2026-01-12 21:15
Usually it's kids who don't speak English at all and they often complain on ru social media that English speakers join their world despite seeing obviously cyrillic username. It's a common sentiment that if you see different language in someone's profile and it isn't stated in their status that they speak English too, you just shouldn't join them and should instead find another user who you can actually communicate with. Kinda reasonable, imo🤷♀️

I'm sorry Russian players, but this is best for the both of us.

Dunno why but it’s always adorable when ppl try to overcome language barriers in games)

The Europe server feels like the Russia server sometimes. A lot of times when I co-op for a boss I can't understand what anyone else is saying. It's a shame; you could be co-oping with someone really cool but have no idea because you can only barely communicate through stickers and/or Razor language.

It's not like a language that one can learn and use though. It exists for research purposes.
I truly appreciate your comment for making us language nerds that aren’t working in linguistics feel like we didn’t waste a degree!!
But I mean if you do figure it out please hit me up, wtf are they on.
Happy Cake Day
If Hoyo could go back in time, they'd likely just give Russia its own server. It's impossible to overstate just how hugely it blew up here, it couldn't have been foreseen. The other Hoyo games are nowhere near as big of a deal in Russia.
I'm from the European part of the country myself, but most of my gaming sessions fall on the nighttime and I genuinely don't feel any difference in how many Russian speaking players I see in Genshin. Be it 5 PM or 5 AM, it's Cyrillic galore either way.
Saw some cool interactions in that game. Of course, there was the usual grieving and bullying though. There were a large amount of concerning messages from what seemed to be children who weren't in a good headspace at all. (you can report said messages though for moderation to try and reach out)

Plus due to how the video game market formed here, the majority of gamers are on PC. If the console version still has its separate servers, you won't find as many Russian speakers there on EU, we are almost all on PC/mobile (mostly PC). Which is kind of the opposite to a lot of the Western EU.
Honestly, I don't know why nowadays teens don't want to learn languages or to it very poorly. But they can continue on, because I will always have a job just because I know some English and they don't. 😈
i had to use google translator to ask for the permission
As an aside, looking at your avatar, seems this is a perfect time to put Duolingo to good use
compared to energy, which has a higher cap but depletes on every question (i enjoy it because i don't actually know French so i kinda suck, but i get why others don't like it)
Spasibo indeed.
But well English imposed itself as the world lingua franca so English speakers don't bother learning or practicing another language and everybody should speak it unfortunately.
no, anytime you see someone who refuses to speak English, it's 100% specifically a Russian.
If the signature doesn't say anything in straight English, I'm gonna assume they're not quite adept with the language and skip over them since it's such a pain for the both of us to try and understand each other when I could be doing a quick 3-5min consented mining or plant-picking while they could be doing whatevee they were doing before I joined.
I'm sorry Russian players, but this is best for the both of us.
