Feeling like I’ve missed the boat – Is it too late to catch up before Snezhnaya?
I first heard about Genshin at the end of 2022, but I only actually started playing in 2023 when Fontaine was released. I played for a bit, reached AR 33, and then dropped it. I’ve recently come back, and honestly? I’m drowning in regret for not playing since day one.
The biggest issue for me right now is that I just can’t enjoy the game knowing how much I’ve missed. Snezhnaya is right around the corner, and I wasn't there for the "golden era" when the old characters were the actual meta. Now, pulling for them feels pointless unless it’s just for a collection.
I don’t feel like I’m "in the same boat" as the rest of the community. Everyone else is fully leveled, caught up with the latest updates, and can breeze through new content. Meanwhile, I’m looking at the mountain of content I have to clear just to understand what’s going on. For example, Columbina’s banner drops tomorrow, and while everyone is hyped and making fan content, I’m still here trying to figure out who she even is.
I know the main Teyvat story is expected to wrap up around 2027-2028. My fear is that by the time I actually become an "experienced" player and understand all the lore/memes, the game will already be starting to wind down.
What do you guys think? Should I rush everything and try to "break out" of being a newbie as fast as possible just to be part of the current fandom? Or should I take it slow, even if it means I’ll only be "good" at the game when it's almost over? I feel like I'm literally trailing behind a train that's already reached the final station.

Its not a race who finishes first , play at your own pace
Looks like a spam / throwaway account posting dumb stuff to
Hell if acc building wasn't a core part of this game the company wouldn't be making as much money since most the money is made from people whaling on const and other acc building things.
Alot of us long-timers who are now all levelled up actually miss when the open-world was more challenging and wasn't a breeze to get through. It's lame when nothing is a threat.
I think you long for a gaming experience you share with others, but the game itself is designed as a single player game to enjoy at your own pace. Make peace with that and don't worry about the FOMO, if you play at a steady rate you will eventually catch up.
ik there gonna be a ton of comments that will tell you that it doesn't matter etc, but if you are someone who values that last part it's very important to consider.
There are some 'community PvP' things that competitive people do, but if you're competing for clear times, you're competing against whales that spend thousands of dollars to get units that deal 2-5x the damage. And if you're competing for Akasha ranking, you're basically competing for who wins the lottery first. A brand new player could come in, get ungodly lucky with max CV artifacts and take first place on a leaderboard, while a Day 1 player that's been spending resin on artifacts for years might never get a 9-roll of Crit.
The only thing that's even close to a 'fair' competition is low-cost speedruns, and afaik that community has diminished a lot from the early days. And yeah, getting good enough artifacts and 4* cons to compete is completely RNG, so an open door to frustration if you decide you have to 'catch up' and just get unlucky.
Seems pretty normal for someone to value getting into a game to try and be a competitive player.
It's a solo game, just play to compete against your past self if anything. Comparison is the thief of joy.
I think the more important question is if you like the gameplay loop. Do you enjoy the story? Do you enjoy exploring the different areas? Are you okay with how playing to complete your dailies feels? If the game has things you enjoy, then have fun and enjoy them!
Second, if a new region drops, it will be on the anniversary. They have done it that way for 5 years. They won't drop Snezhneya in April or May. You have all the way to August to "catch up," if you're that worried.
Finally, Go at your pace. There is no reason to think your account will only be "good" when it is all finished. I have a completely f2p friend who started about a year ago and they have a top 10% Mavuika with her (current). She hasn't touched Nod-Krai banners at all and is still cruising. If you grab Columbina, Zibai, and Ineffa (and Illuga), you will be a titan by the time we hit the anniversary.
This is the patch to jump back in on, for power (and rewards, with Lantern Rite). But you don't need that power to clear the story. You only need it for Abyss, Imaginarium, and Stygian Onslaught. The problem with those ENDGAME CONTENT nodes is that you need multiple teams though. So take your time. Roll on the new banner. it will be there for three weeks. that is plenty of time to run through the old content and earn a bunch of primos to get the banner characters. Then zibai for lantern right will have 3 more weeks to build up primos and wish for her and ineffa. and by the end of the patch... maybe you are only in sumeru. maybe you are all the way to natlan or even up to date in the story. That is a lot of primos to build up. a lot of regions to explore. a lot of content to farm. You can definitely clear it all if you no-life the game to get 100% in everything and so on... but you have MONTHS before we even consider breaking into Snezhneya.
This game is brutal to newbies. And it's not only missing out on meta, it's missing out on community hype, events and memories they come with them. Pulling for Zhongli and Raiden would not be the same NOW as it was then. 💜
And at the same time Genshin is ever expanding, growing and moving on - it can't wait on anyone 😔 You can still enjoy it, but instead of regretting I would just focus on upcoming exciting stuff.
Genshin will most likely continue after the Teyvat chapter has finished anyway. Even if you start at the end you'll have plenty of time to catch up to whatever new content they release.
There's something special about starting a live-service game like Genshin Impact on release and growing with it. You experience the content at the intended pace, region by region, year by year, alongside the community.
A new player starting today (or in 2028) won't ride that same wave. They're not part of the collective hype cycle—the discussions, theories, and patch-by-patch discoveries. Why? Because they're miles behind. While veterans are dissecting the new Snezhnaya region in November, a new player is still sailing to Inazuma in the story.
You're not following the trends and the "mainstream" movement of the player base. You're just exploring the game at your own pace. And by the time you catch up and become knowledgeable, that particular magic of shared, simultaneous discovery is gone. You realize you've missed the entire ride.
The best gaming experience, in my opinion, is getting into a project from day one that later explodes in popularity. You grow with it. Those who start Genshin in, say, 2029 will have a massive, amazing world to explore, but they'll have missed all the moments that built the community. The final wave of players will likely only become truly "experienced" by the time the game's lifecycle is winding down. Well, I won't discuss this topic any further, as it's not a topic worth dwelling on, and I'm using this question to express my frustration. Please forgive me, but I may have just wanted to express that I didn't witness certain times or missed out on something.
Play at your own pace and just enjoy the game
I managed to catch up with the content after about a bit less than a year playing, but i play a lot (and i mean, a LOT) lmao.. and i started just playing only this game.
Yes, i've done all the main content, world quests etc. No rushing, just playing at my own pace. The only thing i had to rush was at the begining, that i had to go to Natlan to be able to build Mavuika and Citlali. But i simply tried not to look at anything, collected my stuff and back to what i was doing.
Secondly and more importantly, I wouldn't *rush* it. I also don't think that Genshin is winding down any time soon. Any normal business wants to keep their products running - especially products that are successful and easily bring in money - for a long time, for perpetuity if possible. HI3, one of Genshin's most notable predecessors, is still going.
To that end, I wouldn't burn through all of the story content just in an effort to catch up. Aside from the important point that **you have no one to catch up to**, by burning through it, you are going to miss things and you are inherently going to have a worse experience going through it than someone who was just playing through it and paying attention. If you were only interested in the gameplay and unlocking new areas, then it wouldn't matter but it sounds like you also want to be appraised of the narrative, so therefore going through it as fast as possible will almost guarantee you gloss over notable moments.
**That said**, if you are interested in going through the story sort of "with" the community as the patches come out, I would get cooking if that's something you are interested in. The biggest benefit of a live service game like this is being able to see what other people are thinking about the story and the various expectations and disappointments and excitement that others are feeling alongside you. So I'd start working on the main Archon Quests and then sort of "work outward" from there via World Quests and SQs. *But at a reasonable* pace, not rushing through it.

As for the meta, don't even stress about it. If you want to follow it, then generally speaking if you are able to pick up modern/newer characters then you're doing exactly what the meta and banner system is designed to do and therefore you will win. That's very gross simplification and there's an amount of nuance (like Ineffa with Durin is not really a team for endgame except for like one or two situations and it's still beneficial to build old characters such as Bennett and Sucrose, but the point is that it doesn't take long to catch up in terms of the meta).
And if you don't care about the meta endgames (which total about a day's worth of content, *if that*, once you are established with it), then collection isn't bad. It allows you to vary up your gameplay and nothing lasts forever anyway, but that doesn't mean your time with it is a waste
If u are talking about primogems, of course you are left behind but its not just you, even ppl who started genshin in 2021 is also behind from ppl who started since 1.0 thats just normal... i advice play at your own pace there's alot of new players that only started in nodkrai patch and there's really nothing to catch up in the game since its single player anyway... The game has alot of content to occupy you for months and of course primogems too remember you have 5 years worth of primogems in the game right now waiting to get claimed and you can use it to get new units...
Anyway, if you play constantly even at a slow peace(1h daily) you should 'catch up' in less than 6 month which is when Snezhnaya should drop(more or less),
also i find the word 'catch up' a bit silly for a singleplayer game, sure you are exposed to possible spoil especially for old content 4.x/5.x but you can still avoid it , or better i suggest to avoid reddit and such since this looks like your main problem (comparing your progress with other) at least until you arrive at a good point in the story.
Really, focus on enjoying the game, except for endgame content ,game is pretty casual that you do not even need to pull limited characters ,as long you level up your characters ,their talents ,get decent artifacts and little team synergy you can clear the whole game even with 4\* characters ,again with the exception of endgame modes ,
so if you do not feel attached to characters because you do not know their story or because you think they became obsolete, simply do not pull,
pulling is not mandatory, just keep save your primogems and you will arrive in Snezhnaya with a big amount which will allow to you to pull for future and new meta characters and consequently at that point you will be able to clear even endgame modes with ease ,since Hoyo always favor new units and mechanics for endgame .
I saw a comment that said the game is brutal to newbies. It's not. Level characters at your pace. You'll only feel this brutalness if you rush. Let me stress, play at your own pace!
You also have another half a year before Snezhnaya. Lots of time.
I mean, I only started learning math around 1980 CE, and Euclid published his Elements in 300 BCE, so I already felt like I was late getting on the train. I studied math through High School and college, learned some number theory. But I left that field and now have a career in IT. I’ve always been fascinated by Fermat’s last theorem but try as I might I can’t understand Wiles’ proof. Is it too late?
(This just popped into my head as a reply and it was funny in my head. No one will likely understand this or find it funny, I apologize in advance)
I really wanted to catch up to the main story so that’s why I “rushed”. When I say I rushed I don’t mean I skipped the archon quest dialogue, I mean that I took my time with the archon quests but skipped exploration and world quests.
You can definitely catch up if you start now. Since you have 6 months (which is more than enough time to catch up) I’d suggest you do an archon quest and the next day do a world quest, then repeat (archon quest, world quests, archon quest….etc). I’d also suggest to spend time building your characters as some archon quests do have story bosses that you have to fight (or at least survive for a while till it reaches a certain point)
