PSA: it’s not as funny as Genshin made it out to be
Time for Genshin fans to prove they’re not bad people or mean spirited.
I know genshin is a lore heavy game and that not a lot of people consume all of the lore relevant content (especially ingame books). So nod Krai came along and gave a lot of lengthy explanations.
And then Nicole came along. She was wiling and excited to explain things, to share her knowledge and if anything, I was excited too because „uuuh, lore drops“
And then her character kind of got partially reduced to… „stop yapping“. And it’s made out to be a running gag it seems, where others just tell her to stop talking or to get to the point.
Here’s the PSA: so… please don’t do that irl.
I’m autistic. I like explaining things. In depth. And I like to share my knowledge. Do you guys have to care? No.
But it really struck me when I noticed how all of my friends in the genshin community thought it was hilarious that people would just interrupt her for „being a yapper“. But me? I felt bad. Because… I saw myself in her. I experience that all the time. They even said „look, she’s just like you“ and laughed about it. While yes: she is very much a fictional character, there’s actual people out there who experience this stuff all the time. I get interrupted constantly while trying to explain things - rather rudely - and then it’s made out to be a joke. I take time to explain things to friends and get responses like „I ain’t reading allathat“ when I type it out or „why are you talking so much“ - even if they asked for the explanation themselves. I get told to get to the point and get interrupted when speaking all the time, no matter about what. Even if I send a lore message to a genshin chat on discord, specifically saying „if anyone cares about lore: \[…\]“ some people STILL go out of their way to make that „joke“ and tell me they’re not reading „all of that“ or telling me to „stop the yap.“ You don’t have to read it. But you also don’t have to be mean about it. A joke is not funny if it’s always towards one person and that one person never laughs.
Of course no one is forced to listen to me, but if you ask specifically me something, and mid explanation you interrupt me and make fun of me for speaking… that does a lot of damage to people. To the point where I have mostly stopped talking to those friends at all. I let them speak instead, and they don’t even notice. And I’ll be honest, it kinda hurts. A lot. Being excited to explain something you care about, putting in the effort of research, being asked about it specifically, only to be interrupted and told to stop yapping - as a joke - but not really cause do actually shut up. It really can break a persons excitement about all kinds of things.
„It’s not a big deal, it’s just a genshin character. She’s not real.“ yup. But we’ve always learnt from the media we consume. So let’s learn from this to not do this to people when they speak irl. Regardless of what they speak about or if they’re neurodivergent or not. Just be nice to people, please. Thank you.
(Also feel free to share any opinions on this, or if you felt like that too. I don’t mind.)

But I can see your point too. I do wish they'd just give us options... that way those who don't have the patience can agree with Varka and skip and those of us that want to know more can hear it.
but..... that would mean the writers have to actually write out the lore and they probably thought it was easier to just have Varka demand to skip.
edit: apparently it's been awhile since I did the quest and I forgot a lot of the details... and probably the comics I saw of Varka skipping everything constantly got conflated with the actual story in my head.
But I guess that's why I took it like that... and not as something against Nicole was the basic point I was trying to make.
After they resolved the problem with Columbina Nicole is already somewhere else and leave only the dodoco form, and there is not much interaction between Varka and Nicole after that.
Nicole doesn't know Columbina true name, so no matter how much she talk about the past they won't find the answer, it's just a waste of time.
Definitely seems like something than was more a mishandling on the communities part rather than the game, especially since Lauma actually sat down and listened to Nicole, which the game emphasized.
For the 1st one, sure I'll agree that it's rude to interrupt mid-explanation. But for the 2nd one, when it's obvious that the explainer has gone on a massive tangent that is in fact unimportant for the task of saving said "dying" person ?
If someone in front of me is in pain and I ask someone for any sort of help that might mitigate the pain or hell, stop the pain altogether, then, in that moment, I couldn't care less about the history of said process.
Some people were constantly whinging about Varka not being a leader, but he was the one that actually kept the group on track, including Nicole, who went on tangents that frankly would have done nothing to change Columbina's predicament. In fact, had Varka not "lore-skipped", we might've not even gotten to Columbina in time
They needed Nicole for specific informations and were in a bit of a hurry (since Columbina could disappear forever at any moment). Unfortunately, Nicole got a little carried away and started talking about details, admittedly quite interesting, that could easily cause the discussion to lose its focus, especially for people unfamiliar with the subject. But Lauma offered to record what she wanted to say in the Frostmoon Scions' archives as she recognized the importance of this knowledge, which is why they both left at one point.
The problem wasn't her yapping, it was more the moment it happened.
If they had the time, I'm sure the characters wouldn't mind receiving a full lesson from Nicole (well, except for Varka who slept through history classes on pre-Favonius topics).
Also, it's likely a translation difference, but I don't remember a moment where they were rude towards her.
No one is saving people from dying by interrupting others outside of this fictional scenario. And I mentioned it multiple times that people do not have to listen to me. They can still be nice about not wanting to or being too busy to.
If you think telling someone to „stop yapping“ is the proper way to tell someone you’re too busy to listen, instead of saying „sorry, I’m on a time crunch.“ or even „sorry, but (whichever topic it’s about) is not really something I’m that interested in all that much.“ and you most DEFINITELY don’t have to go out of your way to ANNOUNCE in a public group chat that you’re not going to read a message someone sent instead of just not reading it and not saying anything.
It’s not that hard to be nice.
Secondly, there is a vast landscape of media out there, and if you can't handle a character you identify with being very lightly poked fun at, that is something you should probably work on. I don't know you or your friends, but it's absolutely reasonable to expect them to treat you with respect. What isn't reasonable is taking it personally if Nicole is getting made fun of. If you can't separate yourself from that, I'd take a step back from the fandom until you think you can.
Remember someone's life is on the line here. This is not just some casual talk.
If this makes people uncomfortable it is on you to adjust and try to cut back on it. Being autistic is not an excuse, people with autism and other disorders adjust all the time.
When your friends are being hurtful, tell **them** that they are being hurtful, instead of pulling out a victim card from something as broad as a video game character telling another video game character to wrap it up.
It makes me especially upset when you compare it to how we interact with people like Sandrone and Arlecchino, who have actively caused harm to us and to innocent people. We are super friendly with them despite them being objectively bad people and being a huge threat to us, but we can't be the same with Nicole who has done nothing but go out of her way to help us???
Also, the whole time crunch issue was literally a wild goose chase set up by Alice on purpose for her own entertainment, but we still treat her better than Nicole, who was giving us crucial information that was necessary to finish that quest, as well as trying her best to be brief and conserve time.
If you know you tend to ramble at inappropriate times appreciate that people are willing to tell you that the moment is inappropriate, ask what's inappropriate about it, learn from it, and find more appropriate situations to yap away. It is not a failing of your friends that you will not adapt to those things.
Online communities are hilariously bad enablers because they teach this belief that whatever disability you have is completely unmanageable and will just pilot you to do things you don't want to do. This is strictly not true. The entire point of mental health treatment is to teach you the skills to NOT cause problems in your personal relationships and you have to put in the effort to meet that.
So, no I won't stop telling people who inappropriately yap to stop yapping at inappropriate times. It is beneficial to both them and me.
Additionally, your personal gripe with your friends has absolutely nothing to do with this meme and you projected extremely hard here.
Also, Lauma was very interested in the topic, hence she invited Nicole to a more appropriate time and setting for her to speak more freely. They weren't being rude to Nicole, I'm sure everyone would allow her to speak in a more casual situation (Columbina and Varka hears her venting during Moon Prayer Night and wants to help her).
