In my experience it also roots from people focusing too much on a loud side of Aether players that self insert as him and push the harem route over anything the story has to say, even if the game contradicts it. As a result female characters get reduced to the waifu aspect and portrayed with liking Aether as their sole personality trait, everything else gets ignored, that's why there's so much fearmongering about Citlali/Columbina/etc and pretty much every future female character in the game, even if it's just a potential interpretation and nothing else.
The ironic part is that the crazy fearmongering sometimes comes full circle when the most reactionary side of these people focus so much on it that they end up as the ones reducing these female characters to the player pandering/waifu aspect ignoring every other trait they might have.

Yes Columbina cares about all her friends but it’s made pretty clear that her relationship with Traveler is deeper and more special than the rest.
They mainly focus on her relationship with Aether because it’s one of the main cornerstones of her story, that’s why the trailer shows off the "homes" she ran away from (frostmoons scions and Fatui) and the three people who had the most impact on her life, Rerir who tried to kill her, Traveler who saved her and helped her make friends, Dottore who manipulated everything and separated her from said friends.
People can have preferences among their friends and it makes sense for Columbina to favor traveler among the rest of her friends, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about her other friends, just that she has a deeper connection with Traveler.

We know bina's relationship with everyone, she cares about all her friends as we seen in the aq, she's not just close to the traveller but close to sadrone/arle too, then why does hoyo keep showing us bina with aether, in her animated short and character trailer both didn't feature arle or sandrone and it's mostly just aether, is it that hard for hoyo to also show us other characters aside from aether, why is everyone just ignoring this

Isn't this already mentioned in the latest main quest? Columbina didn't understand that Sandrone said "mean" things to her, because that is just how she is as a person. She thought the others tolerated her because she was a colleague and because they wanted something from her. Its only in the latest main quest that she realises that their behaviour was an invitation for friendship and that sometimes people who stick close to you don't just do that because they want something from you but actually just like you. After that realization she plays some games with Sandrone and Arlecchino at the festival.

Its very obvious what Hoyoverse is trying to do here, its been present ever since the characters met and it happens in all regions.
Any form of shipping in this game isn't to further develop characters, its to sell characters based on their interactions with each other.
Columbina " traveler(yes, they are pretty much the same character) is what they'll imply but it won't get much further than that, same applies to any implied relationship in the game.

Im personally not a MC-shipper but at least Xiao/Traveller feels earned. We've had years of quest and events and you slowly see Xiao get more comfortable around Traveller and others so it makes sense at least to me. Unfortunately Hoyo hasn't really been doing that recently specifically with their medium female cast.
I dont think these gals would get nearly as much backlash from some of the community if Hoyo built up the relationship rather than pushing it after we've known them for a week.

Ofc, some aether hate stems from hoyo pushing him as the representative MC instead of lumine. Some people hate him specifically just for that reason.

In columbina's case, it's both.in past months of her life She made a deep connection with traveler who frequently visited her and they both fought for each other as well as making important decisions of getting back to moon and passing through moon gate. 6.3 quests will also feature her making other important decisions as well as relation with traveler.
So it's both really.
They think her having a good deep relationship or any romantic interest in the traveler instantly makes a character "gooner bait".

Yes Columbina cares about all her friends but it’s made pretty clear that her relationship with Traveler is deeper and more special than the rest.
They mainly focus on her relationship with Aether because it’s one of the main cornerstones of her story, that’s why the trailer shows off the "homes" she ran away from (frostmoons scions and Fatui) and the three people who had the most impact on her life, Rerir who tried to kill her, Traveler who saved her and helped her make friends, Dottore who manipulated everything and separated her from said friends.
People can have preferences among their friends and it makes sense for Columbina to favor traveler among the rest of her friends, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about her other friends, just that she has a deeper connection with Traveler.
Other important figures being absent from a trailer doesn’t make them suddenly cease to exist…it just shows that the writers want to show the specific people that had an important impact on The character’s life and development…
Why did Dottore get his own mannequin in the trailer, they could have simply kept the faceless Fatui troops but they decided to show off Dottore specifically because he also had a massive impact on Columbina personally.
Again, showing that Columbina favors the Traveler, be it in trailer or story doesn’t mean she stops caring about anyone else.
