How did half-Fontanians come to be before Neuvillette?
[Lawrence is fully Fontainian or half?](https://preview.redd.it/6bvi6ayfa5dg1.jpg?width=2532&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f5c43e1b2f7d038800df87d01f048862b449b68)
iirc in the past people prayed at the fountain for the hydro archon’s blessing to have a child. Then it turned out that Fontainians had to do that because they were never really humans but oceanids. Then Neuv made it so the people of Fontaine were real human beings, rendering the old tradition useless now. So before that point was it impossible for half-Fontainians to exist in Teyvat? Could it just be that Lawrence’s dad just hailed from the region but isn’t ethnically Fontainian (like Arlecchino)?

edit: I also remembered that Remus himself wasn't a Fontainian, since he came from Sumeru.
Egeria and the oceanids apparently did indeed live in that region for a time before the Sin and Remuria.
There are indeed indications that at least some of the knights of the lake were a result of Egeria's sin. Erinnyes makes some speeches about them carrying such a sin, but it's not clear if they knew exactly what the sin was

It includes the books about the fall of Remuria, the story of Fontaine's glider, the artifact sets, and the quest about Remuria's last day.
I believe there may be other sources as well, but my memory isn't good enough to remember everything.
You can verify anything on the wiki, which provides the sources of the information
The lore surrounding Egeria is much clearer, although still limited.
The problem is that you'll need to focus on organizing the timeline in which the information flows.
There were peoples descended from the first civilization in the region, and at some point Egeria and the oceanids lived there as well. Whether this was on land or not is not stated.
Then the Sin of Egeria occurred, and Egeria was imprisoned in the primordial sea. Remus arrived in Fontaine after leaving Sumeru, met Sybilla, and built Remuria.
Then the conflict between the people of Remuria and the other local peoples takes place.
Remus dies and Remuria falls, Egeria is freed from her prison, becomes an archon and begins her rule until the cataclysm.
Among these events, there is some information that tells a bit of the story.
How Remus learned of the prophecy, visited Egeria in the primordial sea and received a cup from her, the transformation of the people of Remuria into stone golems to try to escape the prophecy, the knights of the lake fighting to protect the Oceanids, finding the Grail, freeing Egeria and saving themselves from their sin.
You don't need to blindly trust everything on the wiki. Just read the information, click on the source where the information was taken from, and check the location in the game itself
Which would probably drive the Fontainian of the relationship to want to do so.
I don't think it would be an issue no matter if the mother was the regular human or not since unless they are touched by the primordial sea water they function exactly like normal humans so the baby should just grow inside the mother normally despite being an Oceanid.
One explanation that I've seen mentioned is that praying at the fountain doesn't guarantee a child - and that when it does work, it doesn't guarantee that the child will be YOURS. All the people praying are allowing new children to be born, but the actual individuals chosen to be blessed with a child are randomly chosen from all of the qualifying couples anywhere in the world.
This is why praying at the fountain is seen as a quaint tradition, rather than a necessity. There could be Fontainian couples who manage to bear a child without praying, and there may be those who pray but don't get a child - but it works often enough that Fontainians in general tend to go and pray anyway.
Another possibility is that as full humans, non-Fontainian have access to whatever leyline phenomenon allows new humans to be born. As long as one of the two participants is fully human, you get a fully human child. Only when you try to produce a child with two Fontainians is the extra effort needed to provide a soul, because the leylines won't - or can't - cooperate. They're not geared to handle Oceanid souls, since Oceanids divide and recombine parts of their existing souls to create offspring.
