I still don’t understand how >!Teyvat fits on a globe. Like how does the map wrap around it?.!< I don’t know if I’ve missed something if I have please let me know.
Draaxus2026-01-14 22:16
There's more to the planet. Society simply hasn't bothered to leave the continent so they think that's all there is to Teyvat.
FEEQONE2026-01-14 22:40
That’s it?
>!All those wars, all those deaths, the dragons, the Moons, the civilizations, all the horrors that started after the arrival of the First Descender…. Over one continent. Not even a planet. !<
>!And I just feel like the “They just didn’t step out of Teyvat because they couldn’t be bothered” excuse is a bit lazy from a world building perspective. !<
I don’t know, just not satisfied with these missing pieces. Hope they expand on some of this. >!Perhaps towards the end of all this we get a globe map, who knows…..!<
DikerdodlePlays2026-01-14 22:48
That person doesn't entirely know what they're talking about. Teyvat is just a single continent but everywhere surrounding it is referred to as the Dark Sea. Golden Apple Archipelago is one such location. Supposedly, during the Archon War, many defeated gods fled to the Dark Sea rather than live under the rule of the Seven. This is how Orobashi came across Enkanomiya, as well.
FEEQONE2026-01-14 23:00
Right yeah someone else just pointed that out to me too. Makes sense.
But my only confusion is with the wrap. Nothing in Teyvat seems like it’s wrapping around.
Anywho, probably the most realistic explanation is that it’s just a game.
DikerdodlePlays2026-01-14 23:09
Yeah I mean that's understandable. Like, in-game the distance from Nod-Krai to Mondstadt is like 10km, so if that's at all representative of the planet, Teyvat would only be like 50-60km circumference (by just eyeballing it).
But I think it just comes down to having to suspend your disbelief. Like, Liyue should absolutely be much bigger than it is in game to match the lore, but it's just infeasible to make a game like that.
MorbillionDollars2026-01-15 00:04
The in game map is only like 15km right now. Assuming that the planet is around earth size the map wouldn't suffer significant distortion from the curvature until it's like 100km across.
All of genshin impact is smaller than half of rhode island. That's how small of an area we're dealing with, which is why the world seems flat.
BleedingUranium2026-01-15 00:21
The in-game world is ***drastically*** smaller than its actual canon size; scaling down like this is basically universal in all open world type games. You don't actually think Liyue Harbour is a mere *three kilometres* from Mondstadt City, right...?

One of the very few references to specific distance we get can be found in [Perilous Trail](https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/End_of_the_Line_(Quest\)), when Bosacius says that they're to "hold the line at 100 kilometres outside The Chasm at all costs!". Meaning 100km is sufficient distance to at minimum protect Liyue Harbour, and probably more so keep the threat contained to the Chasm area.
MorbillionDollars2026-01-15 00:25
We're not talking about that right now, we're talking about the map. They said they were confused about how teyvat is a globe because the map didn't seem to be wrapping around.
The answer is that the version of teyvat we play on is a miniaturized map made for a video game which is too small for distortion from the curvature of the planet to apply to.
BleedingUranium2026-01-15 00:27
[Both of these things are related to each other; here's an enhanced version of this scene showing Teyvat's nations.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/1qct3d7/huge_spoilers_for_luna_iv_teyvat_map_new_areas/)
MorbillionDollars2026-01-15 00:37
As I said, I was exclusively talking about the in game playable map, not the large real size one. I was explaining why the map seemed to be extremely flat in game despite the fact that the planet is a large sphere in lore.
At the size of the miniaturized map there would be no visible distortion from the curvature of the planet, and a large one which does show the curvature would be unsuitable for a video game.
Honestly I get the feeling that you're not even reading what I'm saying. Please just stop trying to argue with me, we're not even disagreeing, we're talking about completely different things.
ChChChillian2026-01-15 02:50
[This is an experiment I did a while back.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/1lypmhh/resinless_experiment_distance_from_monstadt_to/) I had Traveler walk on foot from Monstadt City to Liyue Harbor over a reasonable land route, following roads wherever possible. I assumed a day was the same length as ours and a pace I know I can personally maintain for long distances, and while I kept him on the road longer than I knew was typical for historical foot travel (7am to sunset) I figured that wouldn't be a problem for a superpowered alien twink.
Under those conditions, it seems overland distance between the two places was around 320km.
JayEssris2026-01-14 22:40
as far as we've been told, Teyvat is the only continent on an otherwise fully ocean world, much of which is covered in abyssal corrosion. That's what Alice means when she says that the Hexenzirkel protects Teyvat's borders; the borders between the abyssal sea and Teyvat's seas.
FEEQONE2026-01-14 22:50
Right which isn’t necessarily an issue. Even Earth is ~70% cover by water and I can entertain an assumption that Teyvat is kind of in its Pangaea days.
>!But my only confusion is with the wrap. Nothing in Teyvat seems like it’s wrapping around, it’s just flat and plain.!<
Anywho, probably the most realistic explanation is that it’s just a game and I’m looking too much into it… oh well.
TheTechHobbit2026-01-15 01:30
Not many games actually feature visible curvature of the planet they take place on even if the entire game map is the whole planet. That's something only really seen in games specifically about seamlessly traveling between planets like Astroneer or No Man's Sky.
Sentinel102026-01-15 16:57
For sure. Probably not something prioritized in game development for the most part.
Xenoblade Chronicles X features a massive world over multiple continents, but like Genshin, it doesn't bother with portraying curvature.
thisbigdiamond2026-01-15 04:52
well the continent doesn't cover the whole planet so there doesn't need to be any wraparound.
BleedingUranium2026-01-15 00:18
The in-game map isn't 100% of the planet's surface area. [Here's a version of this shot which better shows the familiar landmasses on it.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/1qct3d7/huge_spoilers_for_luna_iv_teyvat_map_new_areas/)

It took them more than 3 years, but in a way, they finally got their wish to go to the moon. A love that can transcend even the cosmos.
Cipher-DK2026-01-16 04:13
I should've taken a screenshot of when they're sitting on the spaceship. Especially since we get a moment to walk around and position Aether and Columbina in the exact same way.
