The last time we were separated, it was a specific choice because we were fighting with Macuika in the Night Kingdom. We made the choice to separate. She didn't like it, and she was praying to the Sacred Flame harder than anyone.
This time, we told her to sit back, despite there being *no real reason* for it, since Paimon has been through some serious bullshit with us. Then we didn't return. This was the Sacred Flame slowly going out moment. Paimon is not made for this.
Honestly, my only problem with the whole sequence is that we didn't kick down the door to the Curitorium and call out to Paimon that we were alive and sorry for making her worry.

The problem with Paimon will forever be her rampant stupidity combined with her inability to stop repeating basic crap everybody says over and over and how we let her talk for us and don't correct her when we clearly know better or have a different opinion, THEN PROCEED TO ACT ON HER INCORRECT ASSUMPTIONS.
This doesn't exclude Paimon from being a good friend to us, or caring about us. I would hate Paimon significantly less if she was just not a part of the story as often, not the central figure in every conversation we have, and not attached to us 24/7. All of these are things Nod Krai has done very well after having a slight glimpse of it during Natlan's finale.
I've always said it, when a bunch of characters get together and can talk, even if not specifically at us all the time, without Paimon interjecting every 2 or 3 lines with meaningless dialogue, the entire story quality of genshin rises immensely. It happened in the chasm the first time and it took pretty much until Natlan before conversations of that ilk started happening again.
If she's gonna continue to be the way she was in 1.0 for 90% of the game though... you can't convince me to like her in the slightest

Hoyo has recently learned to show not tell for their friendship (because they have a TON of voice lines about just about anything and everyone that you could listen to at your leisure and those prove that they are indeed good friends and that traveler is actually talkative) and suddenly people are like "oh my god look at how the cute small mascot character designed to be adorable to younger audiences really really cares about the traveler!

That said, I heard that she is now employed by another studio, and her acting got a lot better after Natlan.
