The purpose of a villain in a story is for... them to lose against the good guys. Giving us a good ending. What do you mean?
TomatilloNo21912026-01-15 07:46
Not all stories can have a good ending, theres multiple types of endings to stories
hars5682026-01-15 09:13
There's no good ending to rerir n his love
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 09:16
It is good ending since we managed to put Rerir on our side. And for Rerir himself, he was the villain. So it's a good ending for us the heroes, the one we are supposed to incarnate
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 08:22
Hum, no. You probably didn't see enough fiction. But no the purpose of a villain is to accomplish his villain goal and see for himself what lies beyond said goal. And the heroes have to try and stop him. If we fail, the villain was right, if we win, we are right. There shouldnt always be an happy ending. In fact the best stories are often those who dont end happy
Gold_Pineapple76442026-01-15 08:38
Then please do tell me how are you expecting this from a chinese game with a majorly young demographic of kids.
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 08:47
Yes, I am not expecting it indeed. Doesn't change the fact I am still disappointed since it rubs all the potential away from the genshin story. That's why it still bothers me when people call NK AQ peak story or something, it just shows how low the bar of storytelling in genshin has got
Gold_Pineapple76442026-01-15 08:55
Why it bothers you if someone likes something? You can engage with better literature for your own pleasure and let people be happy with what they like.
Nod Krai can be "peak story" for those that didn't engage with anything better... And for that I say, no one should be forced or expected to engage with something better.
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 09:05
Then they shouldnt try and force their peak story agenda to everyone then, if they didn't see enough stories. It's like people saying natlan is peak shonen story when they didn't see hunter x hunter or fullmetal Alchemist. It's good if you think it but dont make arguments with others about it. The problem is that NK glazers will fight anyone who even dares to even criticise anything about their so called peak story and give you the fatui HQ sub or the natlan glazer surname for no reason
Gold_Pineapple76442026-01-15 09:16
The same can be said about Fontaine glazers, Sumeru glazers and anything else. Game, anime, movie, book. The younger audience just makes this more common because of their lack of experiences. Besides, don't take things too seriously when people are happily saying everything is peak. It's just the new internet buzzword.
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 09:20
Maybe you're right. Then why did they put so much effort on criticising natlan back then? It has the same problem of friendship power and villains writing troped than nod krai. Why is it different this time? If the low bar storytelling was a metric, why did they take themselves as the mastermind storytelles back in natlan just to slander mavuika or capitano writing when NK has the exact same problem or worse? Just to defend NK story which has the same problem now? Maybe I will never know
Gold_Pineapple76442026-01-15 17:11
Natlan suffered from agenda posters mad that the region didn't have enough guys for them to... You know what I mean. Anyway, they went ahead and trashed the entire region because of one particular problem they had with it, just that.
If the region released 6 muscular dudes you can bet it would "top Fontaine storytelling".
The_Great_Ravioli2026-01-15 08:27
I am consistently impressed at this sub's ability to produce the stupidest fucking takes imaginable.
OP is basically mad that water is wet.
lgn5i20602026-01-15 08:28
Because happy endings, good winning over evil, power of friendship etc sell.
katbelleinthedark2026-01-15 08:40
Villains are a structural foil to the heroes and their job is to drive the narrative forward. They basically exist for the heroes to have something to fight.
And happy endings sell much better than bad endings.
Grouchy_Gap452026-01-15 08:45
This is just a bad take. Why does happy ending sell better than bad ending. Fontaine as a tragic ending, doesn't change it was one of the most insane region in terms of revenue. Dont see your reasoning
katbelleinthedark2026-01-15 08:56
Fontaine contains tragedy, but I would never call it a bad ending, what do you even mean.
Furina is freed from suffering. Neuvillette regains the power that he was owed and which was taken from the dragons. Fontaine is saved. All people are absolved of their sin and are not cursed to dissolve anymore. Fontaine is at peace.
Which part of this screams "bad ending"?
Fontaine is well-received and well-liked because it delivered high emotional stakes that it pulled off while STILL giving a happy ending. Everyone lived except for some disposable NPCs. Things are better at the end of Fontaine AQ than they were at the beginning. That's a happy end.
A bad end would be if Furina was still stuck in her endless play-pretend, if Neuvillette ignored the people, if Fontaine was permanently flooded, if all people dissolved. None of that happened.
Humans in real life tend to prefer happy endings because they drive forward the idea that obstacles can be overcome, problems resolved, that good people can live happily ever after. We invest emotionally in characters we like and we instinctually don't want to see them end the story miserable, destitute or dead.
Also, MHY has stated many a time that their stories are about the beauty and strength of people, an ode to humanity. They like it when their characters, having suffered through the narrative, emerge victorious in the end. They persevered and were rewarded with happiness.
And isn't that what everyone hopes for for themselves in reality?

You sound like the type of person who would get mad at a horror film for having a scary monster or a comedy film for being too funny. Like what do you expect ?? Its always been this type of game about good beating evil, if you find it nauseating then stop playing the game, there's your solution.

Some stories are upbeat, with a lot of idealism and a focus on positive outcomes. Others aren't.
Genshin Impact is CLEARLY in the "positive" category. It doesn't try, nor is it obligated to try, to navigate the entire spectrum of storytelling. It's part of the reason that I like it - I get plenty of cynicism and depression in the real world. I don't need it in my escapist fiction, as well.
The best that villains are going to get here are temporary triumphs before their inevitable comeuppances. And most of the villains are going to be more on the "grey morality" spectrum anyway, with very few of them actually evil or fully amoral, like Dottore.
