(Minor lunar 4 spoilers) (big theory) How Rerir can come back, and what is he being saved for.
(Recap, can skip to the actual theory if you want)
In lunar 4 we learn that the doctor was who brought rerir back. He did this by condescending enough of rerirs fragments that rerir could be a threat to the gang but not a big enough threat for him.
That abyssal rerir then got himself up to 10% of his original power.
He then gathered more fragments and then sent into the moon gate
Where he now resides in that point of time, unable to move forward or backwards in time, his body not being destroyed this time because of it’s current 10% abyssal state
And because of dains presence right before he was sent into the moon gate + the weak but chaotic abyssal power being suppressed in a place made of pure light realm power. Rerirs personality has all calmed down, he now wants to make right.
(When he first entered the moongate he was full of anger and desire for the moon, so for 500+ years all he could think of was that, but this time all he could think of was dain and his past).
(Theory)
There’s still little under 90% of Rerir in nodkrai as the wild hunt.
-(Wanting to end the wild hunt, and now having the knowledge of what it is.
It would make sense that the light keepers would gather rerirs fragments.)
So with rerir now wanting to make up for his prior actions, wouldn’t it be most fitting if he allowed himself to be used once more, against another sinner or even shade or even the abyss.
Vet knew everything an did nothing
Abyss manipulated him and his lover, causing all their suffering post cataclysm.
And ranova has cursed not just himself but also his friend and all of his people, causing suffering infinitely worse than rerirs hunting down and “extermination” of the filthy crimson moon descendants.
Although the red blood of the crimson moon will never come of his hands.
He can still drown it in the golden blood of a god.
It even works for their characters.
Both rerir and ranova follow orders for a leader they to not understand. Committing horrific actions because they believe it’s for the better.
Plus the whole point of the sinners is that they are immune to and defy the world’s laws. And ranova is the law of death and cursed rerir with immortality.
-
However only the 10% of Rerir in the moon gate would be willing to aid. The other 90% are likely still the same angry, moon obsessed rerir (if not then why dose the wild hunt continue to attack, it’s literally monsters born from rerirs current mind in each fragment)
That’s where istaroth comes in.
Is been theorised that istaroth is some what un-loyal to the primordial one.
Or maybe knows the truth of why its asleep. She should know all current past present and future.
So istaroth or maybe even venti (as a shard/child of a shade, and has a history in calming the cursed, corrupted edgelords) will destroy the moon gate realm, and shove that somewhat good rerir into a body with all of his other fragments.
There rerir will have to battle with 90% of his old self’s pain, anger and fear. Eventually coming out on top.
(Love the idea of rerir’s designs becoming pure white, free from and bandages/constraints. Maybe becoming columbinas knight)
As in the finale battle with ranova or vet, rerir will be the lance.
Plus we know each sinner is thematically opposed to the each shade.
With rerir being “blasphemy against death”
I just finished lunar 4 so here’s my mind right after lol

It's good that he repents for his sins, but a murderer does not get out of the jail just because he realizes he made other people suffer.
At the end of the day, Mihoyo tries to give a good message with their storytelling, and that means if Rerir ever gets out it's to be killed by the new villain. That's his redemption.
Raiden Shogun Boss was already in Ver 2.1, but the weekly domain was only added in Ver 2.5
Given that Rerir seems to have regained himself, there should be no more reason to fight him. Unless they somehow make him go insane again, there would be no valid explanation for a weekly boss variant.
I want Rerir playable but also…did he not reach a form of peace with Tholindis? They’re together again in the only way they can be. She’s clearly at peace
There are more than enough plot hooks left (the fragments in the wild, the purified heart Flins probably still has etc) that can justify his ability to return.
But now the question is, should he return? He finally has a clear enough mind to regret his choices in life. And further regrets his actions while under the abyss's influence. He also has the closure he wanted, having finally (almost) caught up with Tholindis. Considering that, would he even want to leave if it means leaving Tholindis behind alone in Limbo? And as we saw with the moon goddesses, even if they can both leave, Tholindis is already dead and is just a soul so she would disappear if she leaves. Meaning the only way for them to be together is to stay within the reflection of the moon.
I personally kinda doubt he would want to leave. And even if someone forces him out, he'll just be wanting to return.
A funny thought would be if we get the light keepers to continue to collect the Rerir fragments and get Columbina to send them to the moon's reflection every time we get enough for Rerir to manifest. Rerir can have 9 other copies of himself to keep company. And Teyvat finally rids itself of the wildhunt. Lmao Tholindis's reaction if she somehow finds out there are 10 Rerirs in there with her. XD.
