My hypotheses on why Teyvat is/was a closed world
There are 2 types of energy in the universe. Light energy and dark energy
Light energy diffracts into elemental energy. Its working is mostly perceivable in elemental reactions.
But most of the universe consist of Dark Energy. Dark energy, are divided into Quantum and Imaginary energy. And outside of Teyvat they usually manifest themselves through the use of Paths.
Light and Dark energy diminish the effects of each other, and although Dark energy is more abundant Light energy has been able to counter it. However, the ascension of Aeons has tilted the balance in favor of Dark energy. The galactic civilization began to abandon Light energy in favor of Dark energy: in favor of Paths.
This made certain groups worry. Among them, various people that would be later called descenders, fled to Teyvat to establish a safe haven for Light energy. A closed world system, free from Dark energy. Free for Paths. However, the 2nd descender would usurp the 1st descender, and in their fury, the 2nd descender would reintroduce Dark energy into Teyvat, thus disrupting the system.
Many conflicts and long centuries would pass leading to Teyvat with a false sky, as we know it today. And now the shroud over Teyvat has diminished. It only time before other outsiders arrive.

We already know why. The first descender came to teyvat while nibelung was AFK, dropped off the humans and put a dome around the planet to protect it from the abyss.
2nd descender didn’t introduce abyssal energy, nibelung did when he was trying to take out the first descender.
As you said it was a closed off dome world. It was pure.
Nibelung changed that again. It was totally their fault.
