Tips for a poor new player
Hey, I just started playing Genshin Impact, but honestly, I'm a bit lost. I'm doing the daily quests and slowly progressing through the main story, but I don't really know what I'm doing... I mean, Genshin has so much lore, maps, and everything else that I'm completely lost. Any advice for beginners, or at least some guidance on which direction to take, would be great.

Welcome to Genshin, it's quite the intimidating experience. My wife found the game extraordinarily challenging to get into, and even into her second account she finds things challenging. Here's some things tha helped her:
* Start by picking a playstyle (it's not a religion though, so feel free to mix things up)
* Casual - Just explore and wander, don't stress the details, do anything anytime
* Lore - Focus on playing the story as thoroughly as possible, getting to know peoples, places, and history.
* Meta/Teambuilding - Focus on grinding those primos for pulls, and try pulling incredible teams. Burn through quests just to get to late game and start bodying the big bosses.
* Pai-poke-mon - Collect all the characters!
* Check out a basic guide site if you'd like help figuring out the order of things
* [Game8 has some guides](https://game8.co/games/Genshin-Impact) including character- and team-building tips
* [This community quest guide](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19KYfTSNpTNXCvwbcPeN3T9Cylc0AaOIqwNysmFqOmWY/edit?usp=sharing) keeps it simple and introduces you to the lore, game mechanics, and fan community really easily
* Find some friends to play co-op with at Adventure Rank 16; friends, especially passionate fans, make for great companions during your adventures
Just focus on enjoying the game, and don't forget that you can always create "reroll" accounts for different purposes, like challenges, lore deep-dives, character collection, etc.
You're also welcome to message me, for example, if you need any help. There's also tons of really helpful folks in this community who are always happy to help. Although keep in mind my Reddit flair: I do talk (and write) too much. lol

If you've only experienced normal RPGs and think you'll just naturally accumulate characters, weapons, skills, etc. just playing the game, think again. You won't.
As with any other gacha game, you obtain characters and weapons primarily through the ~~slot machine~~ gacha. You obtain tokens for the slot machine by doing limited time tasks (i.e. daily missions, events), and doing permanent content.
Also like a typical gacha game, you strengthen your characters by feeding them materials gained through time gated grind - the specific implementation of time gating in Genshin being called "resin", alongside some actual timegating.
Genshin might be a big game, but it's not an especially complex game. It only has a handful of basic systems and mechanics, just duplicated over and over. If the game looks too overwhelming, just cut it into region/system chunks and work through them one at a time.
It's totally normal to feel a bit overwhelmed playing Genshin at first. With so many regions, characters, and systems, it's easy to get lost... but don't worry : once you know what to focus on, everything will click and you can enjoy the game at your own pace !
Here's some tips from a F2P player who's been playing for like a year non-stop :
● 1
Your top priority should be the Archon Quests. These are the main story missions, they unlock the map in a logical order and give you the most experience to level up your account !
Quick reminder : the world of Genshin is divided into Seven Nations, so seven regions, each based on an Element and ruled by a god called an Archon. You will visit them in this order: Mondstadt (Anemo / Wind), Liyue (Geo / Earth), Inazuma (Electro / Lightning), Sumeru (Dendro / Nature), Fontaine (Hydro / Water), Natlan (Pyro / Fire) and Snezhnaya (Cryo / Ice - not yet available)
While following the story, you will see blue exclamation points on your map : some are for side-quests (usually quick to finish), meanwhile the others are the World Quests, they are longer but are more important to the lore and give lots of rewards. You don't have to do them all immediately, but try to finish the quests in a region before moving to the next nation, as this keeps your quest log clean and prevents it from getting too messy (which can feel overwhelming if you accumulate lots and lots of quests to do)

Try to explore each region as you go. You don't need 100% completion right away, but finding chests gives you Primogems and Adventure Rank (AR) points, as well as artifacts, key items, weapons and character level up items.
One of the most important thing to look for are Oculi (floating elemental orbs), offer these to the Statues of the Seven to level them up which not only brings great rewards but also increases your maximum Stamina (and stamina is your best friend because it allows you to climb higher, swim further, and sprint longer).
If you are stuck, you can use the Teyvat Interactive Map online to find things, but be careful as it can show spoilers for secret areas!

If you are also a F2P player, don't worry about not having 5★ characters right away ! Many 4★ characters are incredibly strong if you build them right. Your starting characters (like Kaeya and Lisa) are very capable, but the one I still use nowadays is... the Traveler ! Your Traveler is unique because you can change their element whenever you visit a Statue of the Seven in a new region, and if you level them up quickly they can do a lot of damages (personally, I love Hydro or Anemo Traveler but it's up to you).
The key to combat is learning Elemental Reactions, you can find guides online to help you ! When you combine two different elements, you create a powerful effect: Pyro + Hydro = Vaporize (deals extra damage), Anemo + any element = Swirl (spreads the element to nearby enemies), Electro + Pyro = Overload (causes an explosion).
A good strategy is to have a healer in your team composition (like Barbara) and three different elements to cause as many reactions as possible, or only two differents elements if you prefer to stick to one powerful reaction. For example, set an enemy on fire with a Pyro skill, use the Traveler’s Anemo skill to spread the fire, and then hit them with Electro to trigger explosions.

- Use the Adventurer Handbook, in the menu. It is a checklist that guides you on what to do next and gives you rewards for exploring !
- Save your resources : don't spend hours "farming" for perfect artifacts until you reach like AR 45. For now, just use the best artifacts you find in chests, look for stats like ATK% or HP%, but don't worry about them right now.
- Collect everything when you have time : pick up flowers, ingredients and any item you see. You will need these materials later to level up your characters.
- Don't ignore the stove! Cooking food can heal your team or give you huge strength boosts before a big fight.
- Primogems are rare. Save them for "Limited Character Banners" rather than the permanent standard banner so you can get the specific 5★ characters you want.
Anyways, I'll stop because I don't want to overload you with informations and I'm not the best at explaining, but if you ever have questions don't hesitate !
No matter the way you play, remember to take your time and enjoy the scenery, quests and NPC you meet. There is no rush to reach the end !
Here are some other tips I didn't add but I think could be useful:
• While I advised you to save Primogems for a specific 5★, it wasn't the best advice because that’s actually more for late-game ! At the beginning, your goal is variety : use your Primogems and Fates to pull lots of characters, just to expand your roster. Why? Because having a diverse range of characters and elements lets you experiment with different team compositions.
Once you have a solid foundation of characters and a team you love, then you can start being picky and saving your Primogems for those 5★ banners.
I told you that some 4★ are as strong, if not more than some 5★ : that's the case for Bennett, Xingqiu and, one I love and use in my team, Xiangling (one of the best Pyro characters !)
• In the game, like you must've noticed, you'll eventually get free characters during specific quests and such. Not many, but it's still useful ! And when you reach Adventure Rank 20, you’ll unlock the Spiral Abyss... there's a specific character you can get there so I would 100% advise you to check it out !
• It’s tempting to level up every cool new character you get, but resources become very scarce later on so it's not a necessity. When you get a new character, you can check them up online! Look for "Character Tier Lists" or "Build Guides" that focus on Elemental Synergy and Utility rather than just popularity. Use those rankings as a compass, not a rule, as a "lower-tier" character can still be a powerhouse if they fit perfectly into your specific team !
• Elemental Logic > Brute Force ! You don't need massive physical strength if you understand the "rock-paper-scissors" of the world : if you see a Pyro shield, use Hydro to break it. Learning these reactions early makes the rest way easier (I never cared for Elemental reactions at first because I thought it was too complicated... you can get far only using pure strength haha but for specific enemies it's easy to get stuck). When you encounter a new enemy, you get a guide that pops up and provide you info on them and their weak point... read them to understand how to defeat them easily, even if sometimes the explanation is hard to understand haha.
• When you reach specifics Adventure Ranks, you'll get the option to raise your world level. The higher the World level is, the tougher the enemies and the better the loot will be... so you don't have to raise your world level if you feel like you're not ready to take on stronger enemies, you can totally wait !
• Use Elemental Sight when you want to find hidden loot (it highlights breakable walls, hidden bushes, and interactive objects that contain chests) and whenever you find an empty Seelie statue (the stone gardens) but can't find the blue spirit (a faint blue trail will appear, pointing you exactly in the direction of where the Seelie is hiding)
• As soon as you unlock Expeditions at the Adventurer’s Guild, keep them running 24/7 like a factory haha. Send your characters for Ores, Mora and Food, it feels like a small amount at first but after a few months, this habit adds lots of them to your inventory without you lifting a finger.
I hope you're not too confused and don't feel like it's too much informations ! You obviously don't have to follow them all, and the most important is to play at your rhythm and I promise you you'll understand how the game work / how to get stronger very quickly and you'll really enjoy everything else ! It's a journey 😊
