A couple of clarifications from what I know, so some denominations of Christianity do Holy Communion believing that Jesus is literally the bread wafer and wine (explained next paragraph from Catholicism’s POV), others believe it’s just symbolic, while some don’t do so at all.
Speaking from Catholicism (which isn’t a denomination of Christianity as Protestantism aka Christian denominations broke off from Catholicism in history due to theological differences as a fyi), the bread wafer and wine in the mass becomes the flesh and blood of Jesus through transubstantiation but the outward appearance and traits of bread wafer and wine.
Now I need to explain transubstantiation in depth cause it’s confusing without knowing these details, it’s the transformation of substances but the accidents stay the same and here we refer to the Aristotelian philosophy definition of substances and accidents:
Substance: a particular existing thing or the substantial form of a thing (ie a chair is a chair)
Accidents: features and traits of substances (ie the chair has four legs, is made of wood, and is laying upright)
So in the case of transubstantiation as I said earlier, the substance of bread wafer and wine had changed to flesh and blood of Jesus Christ but the accidents of bread wafer and wine hasn’t changed.
