What's the point of picking the Traveler's outfit if they don't even use it
Am I missing something or does the main character not even use the outfit you choose for them? I understand it not being used in the actual animated pre-rendered cutscenes, but when your character pops in for dialogue, why can't they use the new model?
Played since Day 1 and have always regretted picking Lumine because of her outfit, but at this point it's too late obviously. So I was super happy when we got an outfit that looked like Aether's.
Now I'm jumpscared by the fact that it used the old outfit instead of the new one. Is this something they will fix in the future for in-game dialogue??

I'd guess they'll fix it next patch but in reality who knows, maybe this is how it's supposed to work.
The thing that's interesting actually is that the outfit is granted to the player by completing the Nod-Krai Act 8 Archon Quest, but this game has a "Quick Start" system that lets players skip ahead and go back to finish the past quests later. So people who use Quick Start to jump to Snezhnaya likely won't actually have that outfit in their inventory, until they go back later to finish the quests they missed. Won't cause an issue in cutscenes because they use an "NPC" model instead (just like always happened in cutscenes before with optional cosmetics), but I think it's all the more reason, from a developer perspective, to not bother with some sort of flag for this unless there's really strong player demand.
Even if you do implement a toggle/flag, is it just supposed to be based on whether the player unlocked the outfit, or should it also consider if the player chose to wear that outfit? Even after unlocking the new one, the player can go back to choose the old one, but if someone does that and the game still forces the player into the new one, isn't that bad in a different way? But if they do it based on the player choice, does that break canon in the Archon Quests ahead (where the player's new outfit might come up in other dialog, and will still be used in pre-rendered cutscenes)? Taken to the extreme, you end up like a certain MMO where, if an outfit is important to a quest, they add a quest step where the player is required to equip the outfit first to continue the quest just so that things are lined up.
All this to say, it's one of those "seems easy, but quickly gets messy" sort of things. If they start respecting outfit choice for this, what about cases where people actually paid money for outfits? And on and on... I strongly suspect they'll choose to make the lives of their QA people a bit easier instead.
I understand there being no variable or switch in the old quests, but there's no excuse in the new ones
I claimed them ~14 hours ago and my Aether was using the old outfit
I got the new skin and started (reputation quest) The Witch's Garden. When starting the quest, the first scene was with the skin. I moved a few more steps and suddenly, I was with the regular outfit.
It changes quite frequently. In some world quests, I am with the new outfit, but it would swap to the standard in another scene.
They probably just need to get their things in order.
Edit: I did not pay attention to it, but I swapped around my teams (Natlan team with Pyro MC and Nod-Krai team without MC) during the playthrough
I guess problem here they didnt code flag if you beat AQ or not so they took safe rout and during this patch mostly it uses old model. It changes to skin version when it uses playable model in cutscene and there is no need for additional animations
Maybe some fan will correct it in a Milastra game
This is the same as when exploring the new areas and someone said the outfit changed mid cutscene with Nicole a few times. Could also just be a bug and it’ll be addressed in future patches. I’m more curious if we’ll be wearing it during Lantern Rite
I remember during Fontaine, if you’re in the prison investigating Childe, you could technically do his story quest *while* the archon quest was still active lol
Basically, I was caught up on the AQs when Luna III came out, but was one short in terms of SCs. Little did I know that Act V would automatically enter my quest log upon login and immediately bar me from experiencing the SC quest for a good few months.
Fast forward to now, I've finished the newest AQs and finally got to play through the last SC quest of Luna II and >!do some drink mixing!< for Columbina... who acted as if the events of the Nod-Krai finale hadn't even happened.
This could've been avoided if they'd set the flag for disabling the SCs a bit further into the progress through Act V, instead of just having the quest resources existing on an account be the determining factor.
But due to MHY having basically absolutely ZERO inluence on us players, of what we are doing first, if we prefer to do the AC instantly, or explroe and do stuff in the map first and begin the AC eventually first some days later, is in the end the reason, why MHY, lazily to get all the stuff done quick,er most l.ikely just decided for themself that they don't put any effort for now into this aspect of game design... because the only way how MHY coudl have solved this problem, is by basicalyl forcing everybody to do the AC instantly first, in order to guide that way all players the same way to the new skin first, because that way they could have made it themself then easier to design all other content of the patcvh then on the fact, that MC uses by default the new skin ...
but you can guess it, even that solution is naturally not perfect, because even if MHY woudl have went this rout, you woudl have seen then 100% still complainers here, complaining about, how MHY enforces now upon everybody the new skin, even in cutscenes ect. if you as person like eventually the old skin much more, than the new one.... So whatever MHY would have done, they can't please everyone, skins for protagonists always divide the playerbase...
MHY does also the same for all other characters with skins by the way.. they just decide for themself when they show for short moments in scenes the characters using their new skins.. but MHY doesn't make the new skins directly new default skins, which are from then on always shown, they change instead back to the original skin and even if you changed the skin for those characters, the game switches those characters for cutscenes then always back to their original default skins - so even in this case MHY simply can't please everyone, otherwise making the game would become with so many different playable characters and increasing amounts of skins a whole developer's nightmare, if the devs have to reconsider an always increasing amount of skin variables for every little situation and cutscene, based on your personal preferences.
We will see what MHY decides to do on next patch, if they make from then on the new skin basically canonically the new default skin, which will be from then on always be shown, even if you actively use the old skin (makes imo most sense), or if they handle that situation like basically with all other skins too, and they just ignore this and keep the old skin as default, because its just siompler for them to handle the game, but is naturally not making really sense and feels immersion breaking kinda, because it makes basically the whole moment of receiving the new skin then instantly feel completely pointless.
It bugs me everytime I see it, as one of the other comments here, there is a chance it wasn't put in the code cuz they had no time.
For example, new side quests and storylines from now on the Traveler will appear with the new outfit.
The skin will be highly likely to be implemented on the newest/future Archon quests only. But if they allowed anyone to skip the archon quest toward Sneznahya, similar to what they did with Natlan. Maybe they will never add the skin ever. I really hope they don't do that.
It's NOT engine limitation, it's how the game graphics are made. It's highly likely that all the skin have different model. It's not like most games that have the same model but can change outfits. There's no such thing as change outfit in Genshin; all new skin outfit is just new models. This is why they can't just change outfits in cutscenes easily. The model of all the characters in the cutscene is already set.
Yes, they updated the cutscene for Amber and Jean, but I already have base outfits for them, and the cutscene is still set for the new one. Meaning they rerender the cutscene/edit the scene for the new model, like editing a video.
The reason why they are still using the old model for the Traveler is easy. 1st, everyone has it. 2nd, to avoid new players who still don't have the skin model.
I'll say again, because of how Genshin is made, they can't just change outfits in a cutscene like other games who uses the same model but only different skin. Skin in Genshin is the same as a new model/new character, so any cutscene in Genshin is already set for the old models. We'll see in Sneznahya if they'll change the model.
There's a reason why there's so little skin in Genshin compared to other Gacha games.
Edit: BTW, Miliastra character is the exception, it doesn't follow the skin model of Genshin, it follows the average game model with changeable outfits. That's why there are so many skins of them.

Either way I think it's really jarring, and that if you unlock a new outfit, you should be able to use the outfit without it \*seemingly randomly turning off (assuming the player can't psychically tell which quests are canonically before or after other quests)
It is probably just this patch that will be weird. I just genuinely didn't know that quest was before the archon quest.
Knowing Hoyo it could well be both.
For new players who are just doing random shit all the time out of order. Nope, dont expect shit.
As usual, gamers dont know shit about how game dev works. Its not a do everything because its possible kind of situation.

So to answer your question: the "point" of picking the new outfit is mainly to see it used during combat right now, but it will show up in cutscenes in future patches.
I just played through the Fallout quest and Aether used the new outfit during gameplay, but used the old one during cutscenes. It's fine, you'll live.
Also, I said "future patches", not future quests. Learn to read.

If you do the AQ first, then do all the WQs with Illuga in the new area, no one seems to know who you are, and Illuga acts as if you're a nobody, you also use the old outfit.
Likewise, if you do the main big WQ with the giant eye, then go back and finish the other World Quests, everyone acts as if the eye is still there and it's a giant threat.
It's an issue with continuity and how Genshin's gameplay timeline works. My guess is that no matter when events and such are released this patch, the AQ will still be considered the last thing the Traveler canonically does.
However, it could also be a coding thing that they just didn't make the NPC Trav model use the new outfit - would have to see what happens from next patch onwards, although I would imagine it'll still use the old outfit, as it's less work to do that, so they don't have to have a toggle for different players who have done different things.
Weird, I accidentally started Illuga's WQ when collecting the flowers before I started the AQ and Illuga acted like we knew each other. It even showed the character card introducing him. Usually, that only happens when you never met the character beforehand, but here it seemed like my Traveler already knew who Illuga is even though that wasn't the case.
Tbh, it really isnt a major issue.
Moving forward the devs want to let players see the new outfit in cutscenes they probably have to put checks onto every player on every cutscene to check if the player has unlocked the new costume since its unlocked via Luna IV.
Having locked us out of Selenic Chronicles was also the dumbest thing, you have a pre 6.3 Columbina inside there on a post 6.3 Columbina. Could had let us finish the Selenic Chronicles for those of us who forgot them.
I'm seeing the outfits honestly 50/50 in 6.3.
I wish they just hard coded new outfit equipped? Yes/No, 100% lock in to that outfit in all scenes.
Though I do understand that lore/story wise, the traveler would still have their original outfit equipped before we got the new outfit. So any quests- archon, world, side, story, etc. -before the archon quest where we got the new outfit would have their default outfit equipped.
Do I like it? No, but I get it.
I'd prefer seeing my traveler in her new outfit all the time in every quest. I love when it gets sneaked in where it's not technically a cutscene, just us talking to an npc.
Technically they shouldn't need to change any of the archon quests as this is the latest. Character quests are wether they obey the timeline. World quests / annecdotes changing over is going to a monunetal task to sift through everything.
