His failure is his own fault
What was the point of Dottore opening the false sky firmament? Without opening the firmament, it would be difficult for Varka and Arlecchino to pull down the frost moon, hence reviving Columbina.
Maybe I missed it in a dialogue somewhere, but that's quite a dumb reason to lose.

But that's how OP characters are usually treated at arc's end, they got lobotomized so we can defeat them
Edit: Dottore was also aura farming when he opens the firmament. It was a way of him trying to demonstrate how much power he has gained. Even the Archons are not allowed to pierce the false sky (Mauvika mentions she will be punished for doing so at the end of the war).
That's just your assumption. We don't really know since we never saw them do it without the tear in the sky.
Also, I don't think we defeated him.
They literally broke through the firmament with the moon during the AQ. He closed it on them by the end and they kept pulling. The firmament never stopped them from pulling the moon.
Him opening the sky thus enhances the connection.
I can honestly see why they paimonsplain things at this rate.
Between this and the general misunderstanding of how sandrone's formula works, it feels like people just didn't pay attention to the story at all unless it gets paimonsplained...
"Moon powers" are connected to the moon...
Therefore, closer to moon = better "moon powers"...
And people wonder why Paimon explaining is a thing...
When Dottore realized what was happening, he closed up the sky again, but the moon smashed straight through the false sky.
