Maybe cuz they work differently.
I don't know how accurate this is, but I think the reason why Traveller can be shot away by lightning during conversations is that if you're using them, it's just the character themselves there.
When Traveller isn't in your party, an NPC model is placed there instead, and the old cutscenes/the ones thought to be done before the they get the new outfit chronologically are set to use the old one
