Honestly, why don't they just go with "Wanderer" ? This Hat Guy thing is so ridiculously goofy.
Mango0272026-01-19 15:38
Yeah letting us pick their name was a mistake
Cyphiris2026-01-19 16:07
I don't care about giving anyone names if I'm not going to hear it in dialogues.
TheIJDGuy2026-01-19 18:40
I mean, I get not using the name in voiced convos because how could Hoyo ever account for that
Jrolaoni2026-01-19 18:46
They could pull it off when text to speech stops being so robotic. Because if they use AI, which it make people mad, even though it would make sense in this specific situation with contracts and permission from the actor etc.
Wolf31132026-01-19 20:51
The same way we are, call them traveler or samurai or wander in place of our name. Hat guy is the worst option to pick.
TheIJDGuy2026-01-19 21:16
Oh, I agree, but expecting the name we gave him in voicelines seems a bit much
Ordinary_Divide2026-01-19 16:30
as far as nicknames go, hat guy is near the bottom of the list when it comes to goofiness
Silent_Silhouettes2026-01-19 16:59
i wish hed just pick a name for himself but i despise hearing 'hat guy'
Alzusand2026-01-19 17:11
The nickname works better in both japanese and chinese.
but translated directly it doesent becase its not word play its just an ankward nickname.
TailorUnlikely99802026-01-19 18:04
What does it mean in chinese ? Or is it something that can't be adapted properly for English language ?
Organicities2026-01-19 20:25
It is a nickname based around the word "hat". But southern Chinese has a pretty regularly used nickname system where "ah" + "anything" becomes an usable and often endearing nickname. The "anything" part can be a descriptor or a part of the proper name of the person. For example a fat handsome dude named 嘉明 (Ga Ming) might be called:
If Ga Ming, instead of being fat, was really into lion dancing or wore a hat all the time he might be called:
阿舞 = ah + dance.
阿帽 = ah + hat.
That last one is what Wanderer is called in CN.
Its hard to find a hat based nickname in english that doesnt sound like its from a 60s sitcom: Hattie, Cap, Cappy, Lid, Tops, Rims, etc.
TailorUnlikely99802026-01-19 20:28
Oh, that's interesting. Thanks for explaining.
WandererMisha2026-01-19 20:29
If somebody said “Ah, fat!” when I came in, I’d die 😭
FunBuilding27072026-01-19 23:05
Ah Fei!
Killer_Klee2026-01-19 22:08
Kinda like in Finnish we used to have "nen" ending for endearing nickname, but it is sadly only seen in established words/names anymore. Hat +Nen "Hattunen" is a legit surname and Guy + Nen = Ukkonen is our thunder god sky daddys pet name, which became our word for thunder.
RedThragtusk2026-01-19 23:57
Hatamono.
A pun on his previous name, Kabukimono.
clouddog-1112026-01-20 01:41
as a japanese i confirm
RagnarokAeon2026-01-20 19:16
I mean, I'd definitely vibe with Mr. Hattington over hat\_guy.
The latter just sounds way too dismissive, it's literally one letter off from that\_guy
gryphon_duke2026-01-20 20:39
well seeing as how that's completely lost on us i am baffled that they tried to retain accuracy with that accursed nickname
except spanish. GET IT DON SOMBRERO
casualgamerTX552026-01-20 02:59
I bet there are lots of funny and amusing literary treasures in Chinese and even Japanese that sadly cannot be properly adapted into English. And vice versa.
lleeiiiizzii2026-01-20 03:35
I saw in DurinMains that they were upset that Hoyo had a couple lines about Durin can fly faster than others can run in the AQ (Varka said this and about flying license etc), yet they didn't let him use his own wings while gliding.
It's actually a callback to Venti's voice line "飞比跑快吧" directly translated as "isn't flying faster than running" while the official En version of this voiceline is "wouldn't gliding be faster." So it became an awkward joke in the AQ and the pun/meme didn't quite work. In Cn it got me a chuckle because it's Varka quoting Barbatos.
ImGroot692026-01-21 06:53
in JP translation too. i chuckled when Varka referenced Venti
LittleWolfiez2026-01-19 18:04
Just looked up the CN name and yeah, Ah Mao (阿帽) definitely sounds less meme-ish, even though it remains a little cheesy
darki_ruiz2026-01-19 21:45
Then you get "Don Sombrero" in Spanish and can't help but picture him singing "Cielito Lindo".
AnimeVGTranscription2026-01-19 23:00
>him singing "Cielito Lindo".
can we petition for this to happen asap?
PlacetMihi2026-01-19 18:25
It kinda takes me out of it when he’s in a serious scene, but a) it makes it feel more meaningful when the Traveler calls him by his given name (assuming you didn’t name him something even stupider like Azzmuncher) and b) it’s worth it solely for the moment Albedo calls him “Mr. Guy” all serious-like
zukos_honor2026-01-20 00:01
Me who unironicallly named him Big Hat Logan
Shamshishamash2026-01-19 18:35
Especially since when Traveller uses his given name in a voiced dialogue they say Wanderer while the text says whatever name was chosen. Just like with the Traveller themself. It would be so much better if everyone else also did that.
Annual-Weather2026-01-19 20:07
Hat Guy is his officially registered name as a Vahumana researcher. That’s why he’s been introducing himself with that name, instead of the one given by Traveler.
caucassius2026-01-19 20:29
wanderer is dumber
WandererMisha2026-01-19 20:30
Genshin has always been goofy.
happyppeeppo2026-01-19 20:35
In portuguese is perfect because is like calling him the hat guy is friendly like the guy who lives right there in the corner but no one remember his name but everyone know him in the street kinda guy
Wolf31132026-01-19 20:50
100% that is just so anti immersive for what the scene is. Since the pun doesn’t translate just change it for English.
rW0HgFyxoJhYka2026-01-20 04:41
The name works though. Its just that every patch someone makes a thread about this and anyone who gave the tiniest thought about this decides to post about it. It is what it is. The fans love it.
RagnarokAeon2026-01-20 19:20
The name clearly *doesn't* work if everytime it's used somebody is ranting about it.
The real problem is it feels really dismissive and mocking rather than endearing.
HorribleDat2026-01-19 20:55
Well, it was given to him by the dook dook archon. She just being funni.
And Wanderer isn't the type to refuse a gift from his new mom even if it's the ugliest sweater he's ever seen.
Vaiolette-Westover2026-01-19 22:12
It's because his identity is still not finalized in the world. He is still questioning his purpose.
Impossible-Bison80552026-01-20 00:16
Most likely because when it was first introduced, it seems like a little joke Nahida would do for a one off event. Don’t know if English Translation Team was told that’d become the main name going forward
nxtquy2026-01-19 17:06
With how sharp and knowledgeable the Harbingers and in particular The Knave are, I was surprised Scaramouche was so careless showing how much he knew about his former colleagues. Does he think there’s no way to find out >!he was a previous Harbinger and rewrote his history in Irminsul!< or does he just think it doesn’t matter?
not-Kunt-Tulgar2026-01-19 17:19
I don’t think he really cares because he didn’t erase himself due to being a harbinger he erased himself because he hated himself as a person and for what he did, not who he was.
Plus it’s not like it’s possible for them to remember him anyways as there’s no proof they knew him other then the fact that he knows personal details about all of the harbingers.
iguanacatgirl2026-01-19 18:15
Also, assuming that someone like the knave/Sandrone/columbina does figure out his identity somehow, why would he care?
His main enemy within the fatui was always dottore, the others where just kinda there, he has no real reason to actively "hide" his identity other than being a bit of a loner.(hell, I don't doubt that there's some friendships between him and some of the harbingers that wanderer just, hasn't mentioned because traveler didn't ask)
Mana_Croissant2026-01-20 00:10
Pretty much this. Like lets assume Arle figured it out, what is she gonna do ? Hunt him down ? Both Arle and Wanderer are Traveller’s allies so i assume as long as Wanderer’s enemy remains Dottore rather than the entire Fatui she will probably turn a blind eye and leave Scara to his own devices
RoboChrist2026-01-19 18:26
Probably thinks it doesn't matter. If a stranger knew too much about you, would you think "stalker", "spy", or "former ally erased from your memory, everyone's memory, and the history of the entire world?"
Nero_PR2026-01-19 19:16
Unless the information got leaked beyond Sandrone, knowing his core is made out of small piece of irminsul branch would be a huge clue on his nature and what he could have done. This might get addressed with Sandrone 2.0 as it looks like she had a back up plan.
caucassius2026-01-19 20:31
he literally wanted to die and undid his sin. he couldn't care less what people think of him. only reason he never admitted him being a former harbinger is because that'd require him to give a looong explanation on shit he doesn't care about.
Dark_Magicion2026-01-20 02:20
I would imagine it's tremendously difficult to find out something that has been deleted from Irminsul. Nahida was able to make it happen because she had the precaution of a Fairy Tale that only she knew about at the time.
Now Scarymemes, Traveller and Paimon are privy to this knowledge, but nobody else even knows of the existence of the Fairy Tale. So unless the Fairy Tale goes out to the public, there ain't much they have to work with.
That being said... Andersdotter might know of the Fairy Tale 'coz Durin seems to think of Scarymemes as the Cat. I don't remember if there was ever an explanation for that but I figured Hexenzirkel shenanigans are strong.
rW0HgFyxoJhYka2026-01-20 04:40
Who the fuck is gonna tap into the Irminsul to find out? Traveler?
arbabarda2026-01-20 09:01
and what can she do and what can she find? Nothing.
AntiBomb2026-01-19 22:00
For heaven's sake, please stop calling him Hat Guy in serious scenes, why did it became his official name when it was just a dumb nickname Nahida gave him to sign him up for a competition? Why is he even okay about people calling him that? It doesn't fit his character at all.
It looks like a joke name someone chose for fun when creating a new character in an MMO, I can't stand it for a serious character in a serious story.
Vaiolette-Westover2026-01-19 22:17
It actually makes him stand out for me. It was odd and jarring at first too but at this point it's endearing knowing he himself couldn't be assed enough to get a cool name for himself either.
I agree that carrying the name out of that interdarshan competition where it was a joke is a mistake though.
Sir_Tea_Of_Bags2026-01-20 00:30
He has always been ScaryMoose to me- ever since his first interaction where he showed up, made threats, talked shit, said the sky was fake, then dipped.
MrAdamsonMS2026-01-20 00:42
We were the ones who dipped tho, haha
Redguard123452026-01-20 00:31
His name in CN/JP sounds endearing, while his name in English it comes across as infantilizing.
LavaDirt2026-01-20 02:37
They let us name him and now they need a name so VAs have a name to say. Same with everyone calling Aether 'the traveller' instead of name. You just need a name for people to call you.
AntiBomb2026-01-20 04:53
Then why don't they just call him Wanderer?
StanTheWoz2026-01-20 09:58
I think it not fitting is the point. Originally he was a very arrogant kid who constantly looked down on and disrespected everyone, and that eventually culminated in literally trying to become a god and paying the price of that hubris. I like to think registering him in the akademiya with a silly unimpressive name is partly Nahida trying to remind him to not get too full of himself and delusional again, and maybe make him come across as less hostile, and he goes along with it because he feels like he owes her.
Vaiolette-Westover2026-01-19 22:11
I was so waiting for this. This dynamic he has with the Harbinger women is delicious and makes me giggle every time.
Also Arle is so sharp, you just know literally nothing escapes her.
Barkeep412026-01-20 05:38
I have no doubt the first thing she did after returning to the hearth was to have all her informants look into him and review their security.
