Whoever decided to make a playable character the main focus of the world quest of the region instead of an NPC, is a genius
Don't get me wrong. there are very nice a memorable NPCs. But I can't believe it took them this long to try something like this.
Having a playable character that we're gonna know through the quest is fantastic and knowing he's gonna keep appearing in evens and stuff, it makes easier to be invested in the story and care about him.
For those who don't know, I'm talking about >!Illuga !<in the >!Darradarljod!< quest

You will never get a world quest like Narzissenkreuz or Aranyaka or Sacred Sakura cleaning or Chasm by confining your storytelling around gachas characters because the main value that provides is pandering.
Also Npcs do make recurring appearances.
The fruit gang in Fontaine show up in prison during Fontaine say III and IV. So does people like Edward Eastinghouse and Nacker.
Some of the most beloved people in Genshin are these NPCs that add to the world like Lepine Pauline.
\> hey’re all characters living in the same world, so they should be treated the same.
No, many playable characters are also some of the most important people around teyvet they it make sense why they get special treatment because often their actions directly effects teyvet or main plot as a whole.
This is ignoing actual super important npcs ofc (like capitano)
Maybe that’s just my preference, but it makes the world feel more real and believable.
i don't think it's wrong to enjoy that they made a world quest with a playable character. and it's silly to ignore that you can expand the world with playable characters too.
this is a personal issue, but i struggle to remember npcs too, or names without faces. so it's nice in that regard as well.
saying this as a fan of lyudochka but i'm also a biased illuga fan, i think it's a great way to give 4 stars more content especially considering the apparent discontinuation of hangouts.
i'd love it if their poor sides were addressed more, it feels like they were starting to do that with nefer given that it was included in the archon quest but that may just be part of how they were trying to sell her in particular rather than.. allowing more openness with it generally.
and yes, they can't die but it's not like that suddenly removes all stakes.. at least personally. and death can still be featured even if it isn't the character (cough).
i understand what you're saying and the fear of mishandling, but it's not like good stories can't be told with playable characters. unfortunately, AQs and story quests are irrelevant for most 4 stars i think. or at least many. plus i can't imagine these world quests going to super AQ relevant 4 stars anyway... i don't see the point in it in that case.
i think a lot of the adversion comes from a difference in perspective too. world quest that features character VS world quest About character... obviously the latter is less appealing if they're the sole focus, but i really don't think that's how it was in illuga's. heavy emphasis on him sure but i think there was a decently large amount to digest outside of him too. at least i think so...
NPCs are just boring. Plain and simple. They are NPCs. What's the point of having playable cast if story isn't focused on that playable cast? Not everything, but definitely more than just Archon Quest should be focusing on playable characters.
But what veterans see is: "Its a character story wrapped into the quests for this update"
When previously it would be: "Stand alone character story that adds to the update after Archon quest (main story quest) is done"
So this is their streamlining things together.
The solution is to stop writing playable character like products for sale, not to replace them with NPCs.
Wonder what her secret project was about tho
It's not like world quests where NPCs are leads doesn't exist anymore. The whole Treasure Hoarder line is one of those. But it's important to show that the playable characters lives in the same world we play in too and feature them in quests outside of the voiced ones. Like the Sacred Sakura quest line for example. Yae not seeming all that concerned about the pool of glowing radioactive water under her house/shrine seems a bit strange doesn't it?
We began getting characters regularly since 1.6 with the first summer event and then moonchase in 2.1 began having characters in events.
I think today we are in a great spot with the anecdotes which is one of the coolest ways to have characters exist in the world outside of bespoke events and stories and without encroaching unnecessarily in world quests.
I've personally never played a game where the main cast are just hanging out like normal people and after the anecdotes I question why it took until Genshin to make this a thing.
On the flip side, I've always loved that world quests focus on other characters and stories in the world instead, it makes everything feel much larger.
As much as I love Aranyaka WQ, it’s kinda weird that we don’t at least talk to Nahida about it after the whole thing was done.
But I actually love that NPCs get their own time too because it makes the Genshin world feel more alive. It's not just a story about people with Visions. It's also a story about those who don't have them, the layman people who get affected by things out of their control.
i think the world just becomes enormously richer when it's focused on fleshing out the characters and cultures that inhabit it, not just the characters that are friends with you, and almost all character-focused content feels like they are subtly (or often not-so-subtly) willing to sacrifice story quality for the sake of selling you a product.
People like playable characters, more so than NPCs, so it is better to make stories about characters people like rather than about those they don't like or don't care about. And yes, I know there are also NPCs whom players like a lot, but they make up like 10% of Genshin NPCs. Most of them are either boring or unlikable (and not even because of being evil, but simply annoying).
From story writing perspective, there is no difference (or rather, there SHOULD be no difference) whether a character is being sold or not. Everything Genshin does with NPCs could just as well be done with playable characters. Hoyo just chooses not to.
If you prefer like that then play character focused game like HSR or HI3rd, or even FGO where NPC interraction is minimal.
Like slopmeru is a good example. I just wanna explore the khaenrian ruins ffs I don't wanna listen to some random npc yap about his great grandpa who has 0 relation to the story. Might as well sit me down and tell me about your day and what you had for breakfast because muhh immersion
It took years for OG players to accept the change, and (anecdotally), I have a friend who still calls her Kazari to this day.
I know it's like saying Kazari Kazari but still...
matter of fact, i enjoyed the Koitar World Quest more than the Illuga and Rotwang one, despite the Angel one being small in Comparison, same for the Proof Of Cognoscenti Quest were we go underground, it was a miles better than the Illuga one.
also, who told you the NPCs from the World Quests doesn't appear?? Sorush appeared in 5.1 event and she was Voiced, the 3 Treasure Hoarders in Erinnyes Forest appears in Clink-Clank-Craftshop Meeting Point Quest, Coco and Bona appear in Natlan's Act 5, Verna appears in the Frostmoon Scions Library, Netochka appears in the restaurant once you finish her Quest, NPCs from Fontaine Research Institute Chronicles appears in the World (Nacker and Edwin appear in Meropide, While Raimondo and Choiseul appear in the Fontaine Research Institute area), the Pari appears in the Open World even after finishing their World Quest, and there are more that i forgot.
Having Illuga instead of someone looking like Sigurd makes the quest better.
I think playable should participate often in quest, but not necesarily the center of the quest.
I'm glad that there's extra scenes for those of us who have completed extra quests. Makes the world feel more cohesive and alive
Reading her journal this patch broke my heart
Curve and Talochard are probably my 2 favorite NPCs
That imo doesn’t take away the tension and stakes of what he was trying to do; which was reset the world (or at least Fontaine) in a way similar to how Kulkulkan wanted to in the Chosen of Dragons questline. The methods they used were too drastic and they would lose more than they would gain.
It's very similar to Fate/Apocrypha. Shirou Amakusa is doing a genuinely GOOD thing. But because the MC and his waifu disagree, he is the bad guy. They don't even have an alternative. Just "You're wrong, because you're a Servant and not a Human." With Rene, there simply *wasn't* an alternative at the time, as he had to set his plan into motion hundreds of years ago. He wasn't wrong. Time nust shifted things after he had gone and merged with the PS. It's why he takes his loss in stride. His goal was to protect Fontaine. Regardless of him performing the saving or not, the result is the same. Fontaine is saved.
Comparing to Kukulkan, is valid because he *did* believe in humans and saurians. But time wore away at his belief. The tunnel was too long for him to see the light at the end anymore. By the time we get to him in Atocpan, we already had Mavuika punch through the Firmament and 2v1 killed Gosoythoth. Little One could be FULL of faith in Humanity, especially with Traveler doing the impossible ALL THE TIME. It's easy to see the Light in the Tunnel when you're walking with a Lantern right next to you. Lol
Same goes for dailies, which has evolved into the daily anecdotes.
The second would be Dainsleif and We Will be Reunited, but that's a 50/50 since Bough Keeper IS considered the prologue of the Archon quest.
If we count Interludes, like you did, you also need to complete Razor's story quest, A Teapot Called Home, Raiden's second Story Quest, Itto's Story Quest, Kazuha's Story Quest and Albedo's Story Quest.
My mistake was calling them world quests, not Story Quests.
Thus it is stupid to argue for something that was not in the topic.
edit: aila is the first moonchanter we interact with on hiisi island. alia is the one who ran away with reed miller, became the 2nd RM and is guarding the tower.
>!Rotwang was set up as this returning abyssal evil that had access to a powerful device capable of creating matter and succeeded in escaping death twice only to surface yet again... But because we couldn't focus on him, 90% of the quest was fighting his sidekick and their minions while the big bad is reduced to a purple mist that promptly gets sniped to death by a city-sized Kuuvahki gun. Weren't *we* supposed to be the hero of Elysium?!<
Imagine the Narzissenkreuz Ordo quest line but instead of what we got it was all about, idk, Freminet. Or the Lil' Buddy quest line but Ifa was thrown in to be the "main character". Then instead of what we got, which was a **quest** about the **world** and all of the things, people and events that we get to witness, it would just be an exploration of those characters. In my opinion, those would have been vastly inferior quests.
yaay more filler slop quests where Mary sue traveler singlehandedly takes down the regional big bad guy and get's praised by everyone for being their one and only savior.
Did you even play though the quest? The lightkeepers have been staving off the abyss for 500 years and they have literal anti-abyss artillery guns built into their towns. It would be pretty silly to have their victory snubbed by someone in the final hour.
The downside is that unless you're specifically using [insert newest character on banner here] then he literally provides nothing at all to any team as a rental and is more likely to just be benched for the whole quest.
But the main world quests in nod krai have been pretty ass, including that one, unfortunately.
It was nice... it was very nice
Which is certainly an efficient way of doing things, given that they were gonna spend the effort on WQs anyways. Follows in the same vein as integrating 5\* story quests more closely into the AQ, which makes things feel more plot relevant and less like filler arcs.
At first I was surprised he showed up, an actual playable character, and then surprised once more as it was our first meeting and got to know him then, not just straight up ''oh hey it's Paimon and the traveler! Fancy meeting you here."
still, all respect to my squad captain, except for the part where he was a dum dum. Deserved >!punch!<
This seems to be changing in the right direction. I.e the moon sisters and the fiance of the villain in NK
The story and characterisation matters more to me than how frequently they show up or whether they're playable or not.
