- The area Godwin is patrolling is clear of monsters and relatively safe, meaning he's doing his job as a Knight of Favonius. Heck, he's more effective than that one guy at Stormbearer Point.
- Lying to Glory is cruel and inexcusable, but at the minimum he stayed loyal to her despite being "far" apart (unlike that Liyue sailor).
- Compare him to the other Mondstadt NPC who also made Traveler an accessory to their deception, and I'd say what Nimrod did was far worse than Godwin.
Now, his AWOL (desertion at this point), I won't defend that.

There was no way he could have caught up no matter what since not even Varka nor the expedition knew where they were heading. All they known was some huge problem in the very vague direction up north, which wasn't even the case as they ended up in way west in Nod Krai instead. Mika and the other people were constantly getting updates on their journey and there was no way he could have ask any of them. Him going alone and travel through Snezhnaya is a death sentence and given the state of the other regions before the Traveler had went in to fix it, going through those regions without a Vision is just as worse.

Liyue had the whole Geo Archon died and Osial resurrected plotline (this happens regardless if the Traveler shows up). If you were Godwin and you were thinking about heading to Liyue during this period, you are going to turn back asap. Inazuma doesn't matter since it's not connected to the expedition. Sumeru had the Withering and the seers building a new god in their basement, nevermind how dangerous it was going through the desert, along with Apep still being hostile and how murder-happy the desert tribes were. Natlan is Natlan, so nothing needs more to be said. Fontaine is semi-safe, assuming you're not part of some Fontaine Research Institute experiment, get involved in any criminal organization or accidentally break a strange law. He's by himself here and doesn't have a Vision. and he would probably need to take the same route (sans Inazuma) as the Traveler to catch up to the expedition.
Like, Godwin could ask someone about where the expedition is going to, but it goes counter to him asking someone part of the Mondstadt military to find out. That's how he was written and saying he should do the exact opposite of his characterization is like saying Alice should stop caring about Klee.

You can't imagine the kind of torture he puts people through without having lived through something similar. It's one thing to go "Oh yes, that sucked", but its another to *know.* So, people tend not to view his sins as significantly. Most of their anger is because Collie suffered, or maybe even columbina.
Godwin, however, represents a real problem. The idea of someone lying to you. Ever notice how a lot of Tumblr-esque fanfiction gets *really pissy* about lies/pranks? Most of that is because they dealt with that stuff in real life, so they had a berserk button over it. People are the same with godwin. They never had to live through a crazy madman building gods, but they have had *someone* lie to them about something important, that they thought was the end of the world, so someone like Godwin *is* worse than Dottore to them, because he represents a garden-variety problem that you are far more likely to have faced in life.
Realistically, the guy is a coward, but he's still trying to figure out how to take care of her despite the fact that he knows he is doing the wrong thing. He clearly cares about her, which in most stories, is usually enough to forgive a lot of *worse* sins. (I'm looking at you, 90% of the Childe/Lumine fandom), it's just that unlike a harbinger who nearly caused the death of an entire city by summoning an ancient water god, he's just a liar. Which is the worse sin to many people due to the fact that they know how that feels.
The other part of it is also that he isn't a "Main" character, so he is more likely to actually face consequences in comparison. So some people with justice-boners make it their life's mission to chase after small fry like this, in order to capture that brief flash of actually seeing a "villain" be brought to justice, instead of just walking off because he/she is playable.

I think he's probably just an idiot. Even if he was separated from the main group, if he really wanted to catch up, he could have done so. It's likely that he knew where they were going, so it would have just been an issue of following the planned route and asking around which way the group went. If they went via Liyue, then the obvious answer would have been to go straight to Liyue Harbor since the group would have stopped there before moving on.
The fact that he didn't do this implies to me that he's just terminally stupid.
Personally, I think it would have been funnier and more interesting if each patch he was found in a completely new area. So in 2.x, he's in Liyue, but in 3.x he's in Inazuma for some reason, even though there's literally no reason for him to be there, all the while completely at a loss as to where he's supposed to go. Knights ocassionally travel between Mondstadt and Varka's expedition even if it just to deliver letters. All the Godwyn had to do was to report himself to Favonius headquarters and wait to be send with the next unit. Even if he was denied the right to travel to Varka's expedition he would still serve in Mondstadt. The worst thing for him to happen is to make fool of himself in front of Glory and to have embarrassing story that will be brought up often when he will go to drink with his friends.
What is Godwyn doing right now is just straight up desertion and would get him executed in a regular army I do not doubt for a second that that is what would happen if he was an Inazuman Shogunate soldier. He is lucky that KoF are pretty lenient and chivalric. He should probably only get demoted or be expelled from the order. But I can almost see Varka to just laugh at him and letting him go without any punishment.

Like, Godwin could ask someone about where the expedition is going to, but it goes counter to him asking someone part of the Mondstadt military to find out. That's how he was written and saying he should do the exact opposite of his characterization is like saying Alice should stop caring about Klee.
Godwin is more or less just an actual moron. He's not necessarily an inherently awful person, just very socially stupid and unwilling to leave Mondstadt and at least make *something* of himself. He's gotta be a capable enough warrior and outdoorsman at this point to boot, whatever level he started at. At this point he's played the con for so long I don't think he has any idea what else to do. Does he deserve consequences? Yeah, but some people act like he's way worse than he is.

You can't imagine the kind of torture he puts people through without having lived through something similar. It's one thing to go "Oh yes, that sucked", but its another to *know.* So, people tend not to view his sins as significantly. Most of their anger is because Collie suffered, or maybe even columbina.
Godwin, however, represents a real problem. The idea of someone lying to you. Ever notice how a lot of Tumblr-esque fanfiction gets *really pissy* about lies/pranks? Most of that is because they dealt with that stuff in real life, so they had a berserk button over it. People are the same with godwin. They never had to live through a crazy madman building gods, but they have had *someone* lie to them about something important, that they thought was the end of the world, so someone like Godwin *is* worse than Dottore to them, because he represents a garden-variety problem that you are far more likely to have faced in life.
Realistically, the guy is a coward, but he's still trying to figure out how to take care of her despite the fact that he knows he is doing the wrong thing. He clearly cares about her, which in most stories, is usually enough to forgive a lot of *worse* sins. (I'm looking at you, 90% of the Childe/Lumine fandom), it's just that unlike a harbinger who nearly caused the death of an entire city by summoning an ancient water god, he's just a liar. Which is the worse sin to many people due to the fact that they know how that feels.
The other part of it is also that he isn't a "Main" character, so he is more likely to actually face consequences in comparison. So some people with justice-boners make it their life's mission to chase after small fry like this, in order to capture that brief flash of actually seeing a "villain" be brought to justice, instead of just walking off because he/she is playable.
Especially since he has chance to fix this situation, if he at least try to catch-up thats much better.
I really doubt he's still being paid. It would be absurd if he was still occasionally coming in just to collect his payment and then going back to being AWOL.

Personally, I think it would have been funnier and more interesting if each patch he was found in a completely new area. So in 2.x, he's in Liyue, but in 3.x he's in Inazuma for some reason, even though there's literally no reason for him to be there, all the while completely at a loss as to where he's supposed to go. He'd still be an idiot, but at least he'd be an idiot who's trying.
What is Godwyn doing right now is just straight up desertion and would get him executed in a regular army I do not doubt for a second that that is what would happen if he was an Inazuman Shogunate soldier. He is lucky that KoF are pretty lenient and chivalric. He should probably only get demoted or be expelled from the order. But I can almost see Varka to just laugh at him and letting him go without any punishment.
