A theory randomly came into mind... Dottore experimented on exchanging human consciousness with animals. After Luna IV, we know that all animals in Nod Krai co-existed, or symbiosed with Kuuvahki which is the power of Columbina, the currently only moon goddess, administrator of the moon, and thus the primordial power of Teyvat.

So, when Dottore did the experiment, it wasn't only an experiment with the animals, it was also an experiment between human consciousness and Kuuvahki, Columbina's power.

Now, we all know when a Teyvat person dies, their consciousness, spirit, or soul, whatever it is, returns to the leyline.
