How do people end up in hilichurl cages?

Hilichurls have always seemed more animal than human to me, but I just rescued the so manieth person from one of their cages and can't help but wonder how they get them in there. What motive do hilichurls have to capture someone instead of just killing them?

Do you know about the hilichurl history yet? It doesn't quite answer the question of why they lock people up, but it's no surprise that they are capable of something like that.

It's not impossible that they are trying to ransom them back I guess. There are a couple rare scenes where you can try talking to them and reasoning with them.
