Don’t do it man. Dont do it if you don’t want to fall in love with an amazing story, beautiful character models, engaging gameplay, and an invested dev team. Dont do it if you don’t want to get stuck playing the same game for several hours at a time, eager to find out what happens next.
Look I’ll admit it starts off slow. It speeds up with every story you complete, and there’s a lot of them. It’s a free game with months of content baked into the game.

You post on a Genshin forum expecting someone to talk you out of it? Instead, just look at the number of members.

Joining Genshin now is like telling people to start watching One Piece...
It's a great game, but it's also a huge time sink.

It’s a free game. Play it if you want to and don’t play if don’t want to

First step, dont read what people say on Reddit. Second step, download the game and try it. If you like open world full of chests and puzzle, then Genshin is good for you.

Honestly, the game has great characters, environments, and story. The game can go from a small scale adventure among friends to massive scale battles, and the story is rich with each nation being based off different irl countries and representing their cultures (Mondstadt is Germany, Liyue is China, Inazuma is Japan, etc.) I honestly enjoy just walking around the cities or the wilds admiring the places. Gameplay is fun as you combine elements to deal massive damage and fight all sorts of enemies. Also, the characters are extremely interesting, with some having really emotional scenes that I can't do justice without spoilers.
To me, the drawback is that it is a very time consuming game, both as the acts of the main story progress and how much grinding is needed to level up your characters, weapons, and character skills, with methods that are either locked behind a weekly limit or behind a point system that replenish slowly. Also, its a gacha game, so if you want a character really really bad, your best bet is to spend money just for a better chance to get them.
In short, I love the game, and it's free, so there's really no reason not to try it out. The game's first act, the prologue, is only 2-3 hours, so might as well play it through and see if you want to continue from there

Don't. A gacha game is never worth it.

***Let me tell you a true story. Stick with it if you're curious, or skip if you're not, I won't be offended.***
I work in the Live Entertainment industry. Super hustle-and-bustle, physically demanding, very rewarding. One year ago, an employer I was working for forced me to do something unsafe under threat of my job. I made a poor life decision and obeyed, ending up with a torn left ACL and menial/lateral meniscuses.
The injury required surgery, and the employer fought me tooth and nail. I had my knee completely rebuilt using bone and muscle grafts from elsewhere in my legs, and then I was released for three months of nearly-bed-ridden recovery.
My computer is upstairs. My games console is in my living room. I have no screens in my bedroom. My wife works, so she isn't available to help. My bookshelf is impossible to access because I can't walk. I have no money because I am out of work and the unemployment isn't enough to fund hobbies.
I sit on my rear while my career falls apart. Then, I make a sudden return to this "random gacha game" I started a year prior. It's *Genshin Impact*. Stupid anime game, dumb gambling system, super grindy. I start a new account and begin playing through it on my mobile.
I finish Mondstadt. Meh. I play Liyue. Hmmm... I miss having my wife help take care of me, but she's busy. She's also Chinese, so Liyue feels pretty cool. I play Shenhe's SQ. The Chinese opera song comes on. I cry. I don't know why, it just makes my heart hurt for some reason.
I field a completely ineffective Liyue team. I complete Inazuma. I learn about the dark story of Enkanomiya. I cry. I learn about Tsrumi. I cry. I go to Sumeru, I learn about several characters' pasts. I cry.
Soon, I realize that I'm empathizing with random pixels. I'm listening to Genshin's music, feeling emotions rise and fall while I start the most painful therapy I could have ever asked for, relearning how to walk, which takes months.
Eventually, I can walk again, but I still can't do stairs. I play Genshin in my living room. I get all the way to Fontaine. I cry. Time and time again the game hits me in the feels, and I feel like it's helping me ignore my own pain, somehow.
I recover. I go back to work. Work is still shitty to me, but I don't have much of a choice. I start another account to deep dive into the Genshin Lore. I play up to Shenhe's SQ again. I hear the opera again. I cry.
But I've already seen and heard that cutscene, shouldn't I be numb to it? Nope. Doesn't matter, it still feels important somehow. Realize that I really like Genshin, decide to dedicate free time to a fan project about it. No regrets.

I love this game but personally I just wouldn't recommend people to play now, There's a lot of outdated mechanics and time limited things that makes it annoying
