An ugly region with a map that is too dark and inconvenient.

Nope lol
SaberWaifu2026-01-20 23:28
Probably one of the lowest points for Hoyo in the eyes of the community considering what they did to Dehya during that period.
Full-Paragon2026-01-20 23:46
I know it's a hot take, but I really loved exploring the desert. Jhet's questline was also a highlight for me. I don't know, something about exploring ancient twisting caverns with an Egyptian motiff just really does it for me as far as open world RPGs go. It was confusing and hard to figure out, but I loved it even when I got lost and frustrated.
corecenite2026-01-21 00:58
atp, i dont think it's a hot take anymore that players love exploring the desert. i think the only bad thing about it when it was released is that it was released consecutively: desertdesertdesertdesertdesert all the way up until the end of Sumeru.
players probably just got tired of the never ending sandscapes and wanted more balanced forestry-to-sand ratio.
FieryPlume2026-01-21 02:24
Honestly I always loved desert environments in games, they always have this mysterious atmosphere like in the movies where the main character unearths an ancient tomb or ruins. My nitpicks with the area tho is that I wish it had a unique exploration mechanic because I hate cliff climbing and the clover sigil didn't really make it that much easier (especially if there wasn't one near you). And at the time having no underground maps made it take longer than expected to traverse and do tasks like finding treasure chests or finding those obelisks.
Homulily22026-01-21 05:13
This and the fact that underground maps didnt exist when they released. I personally liked it because I loved getting lost in the tunnels but it was a huge pain for a lot of people.
ZweiChi2026-01-21 01:31
My only issue with the desert was the lack of an underground minimap. It was a tad frustrating figuring out where to go.
Grand_Protector_Dark2026-01-21 01:58
>I know it's a hot take, but I really loved exploring the desert.
My take is, that the desert would've gotten a far better reception, if the Area expansion hadn't been almost only different variations of desert.
IMO it started to really feel quite samey by the 3rd desert expansion.
Coffee_Mania2026-01-21 03:31
I always thought of them as Desert with huge underground systems, Wenut desert sandstorm, desert oasis god graveyard. It's pretty distinct IMO
erae112026-01-21 03:42
but not the way mushroom forest, forest with big trees, and vanarana are distinct tho
Grand_Protector_Dark2026-01-21 03:43
Yes, there are nuanced differences to the exact implementation of each different area. But those nuances require you to actually care about getting another desert expansion.
If you don't, it ends up just as
* Open desert with pyramids
* Desert where most content is hidden by the terrain.
* Desert where most content is hidden by the terrain and a world world quest that throws around meaningless foreign words every 5 mins
With variations of the same 6 earthy sand colors
rloco2026-01-21 08:26
It's tough at first, but once you get the hang of it, it tells you one of the best stories in all of GI.
I hope Jeth will be playable someday.
Grand_Protector_Dark2026-01-21 09:28
>I hope Jeth will be playable someday.
I wasn't talking about Jeth.
The Stormy desert hadn't fully overstayed it welcome yet and it got carried by a world quest centered on an NPC whose story was already liked.
The Oasis desert is where the oversaturation really hit.
It also didn't help how the Pari were just another flavour of "magical creatures that were once important but are now hidden from humanity"
Arcdragolive2026-01-21 09:20
If this Area was part of 3.1 it might be fine.
But having another patch for it does felt stale at the time.
If you were late and just explore it all, it's fine.
It's the waiting for the new area that soured people opinion of it
thegreatlumos2026-01-21 02:20
Underground mini-map fixed every issue I had with it. I know a lot of people had issues with the clearance mechanic, but I'm the kind of player who always does every world quest before really touching exploration, so this didn't bother me (Unlike in Inazuma with the Electrogranum upgrade, this was a bad mechanic imo).
I also understand the complaint of everything being so far apart, but I much prefer this to what we have in Nod Krai, which feels a bit too cramped.
Full-Paragon2026-01-21 04:01
Yeah, the grandure of the lost realm of Deshret and the scale of it was glorious and awesome.
OnePotatoeChip2026-01-21 14:45
Yeah, the desert had this mystique to it that hasn't really been captured in any other region so far for me.
Nayakesz2026-01-21 00:14
Sumeru was peak, i miss exploring that region so much
Organic-Army-90462026-01-21 05:44
Nilou being from Sumeru automatically makes the nation peak
LeKebabGeek2026-01-23 20:55
I miss exploring in general, areas are so small nowadays you barely get do a few things and you're already at 80-90%.
StardustZer02026-01-21 00:55
I feel so old now 😔
Watsons-Butler2026-01-21 01:01
Honestly I didn’t like the desert region. Im still at 14% exploration on a LOT of it - wound up getting burnt out and taking a year break around that time. Still haven’t gone back to explore that.
qazqazpc2026-01-21 01:30
As exploration enjoyer, I wish we have more huge map with cool lore like this.
Nibwoddle2026-01-21 01:33
My hot take is that this area has the best environmental design in the game
hofodomo2026-01-21 02:36
The vast desert is seemingly empty, yet on closer look life manages to eke out a harsh existence. This contrast was enrapturing.
turtlestack2026-01-21 02:36
I miss maps with tons to discover and get lost in.
Shahadem2026-01-21 02:47
They can have this area back.
Lifeless, pointless, and super annoying.
Sumeru was the lowest point for exploration with too much locked behind side quests.
And I just generally dislike the entire region.
AstraMundi2026-01-21 02:47
I love the Sumeru Desert so much, it's a shame it's so hated. I understand that the exploration is a bit tedious, but the lore and scenery are my favorites in the game.
imnotthinkinghard2026-01-21 03:10
The music was godly
lithicgirl2026-01-21 03:12
My favorite region forever ❤️❤️❤️
Dillion_Murphy2026-01-21 03:13
They love Hebrew
-Illuzio-2026-01-21 03:29
I HATE THIS REGION SO MUCH.
after 3 years i finally finished this place and only to farm for a chance to get columbina. im so glad its over
Emerilia2026-01-21 03:44
I love the desert. Sumeru is my favorite region by far. The Eternal Oasis stunned me with everything being frozen. It is beautiful
CadetC2026-01-21 04:00
Compare this to recent regions. It's clear that a lot more went into the map, world quests, and exploration.
This is not to trash on recent regions, but rather to point out how the priorities have shifted towards character mechanics (which we got the monkeys paw version of) and the amazing archon quests. I think it's just a little off balance in how small nodkrai is. Then again, it is an interlude, so let's hope snezhnaya knocks our socks off
MutedAd17922026-01-21 04:26
funnily I just did this area last patch and it was probably my fav desert
One of the things I noticed is Sumeru in general took way longer to explore which I honestly would've hated without having natlan characters running around and idk how people did this without underground maps
quocthuan132k2026-01-21 04:34
I really like to explore Sumeru forests, but the desert literally give me a headache, I really want to finish it someday.
Negerd2026-01-21 04:46
Fym 3 years, it was just like last year to me
AzusaFuyu2026-01-21 04:46
Oh wow, I should really start exploring the area soon
Confident_River_35832026-01-21 05:31
Hard to believe it’s been three years already. That whole Hadramaveth desert still feels incredibly memorable.
allmistake22026-01-21 06:20
God I feel so old.
KamiAlth2026-01-21 06:32
I would have given up 100% this area if I didn’t have Yelan C1. It took so long to get anywhere at the time.
WolfySpice2026-01-21 06:47
I remember 100%ing it all before the multi-layer map was introduced. I had a blast, reminded me of older games where you had to explore and memorise things.
Though even with the map, beneath Deshret's mausoleum isn't exactly much easier.
chocolate-corn2026-01-21 07:13
Since everybody here should be Sumeru Desert preachers, I wanna come on record to say I’m kinda sad I wasn’t into Sumeru exploration back then. I was a bit burnt out after Inazuma exploration and only started getting back into the exploration game during Fontaine. Sumeru was a region where I wanted to explore but felt too tired to for some reason and I hate myself for it since it had some pretty cool moments looking back at it
rloco2026-01-21 08:24
Well, what I've left behind has done a tremendous job at the same level, sometimes surpassing it, as is the case with the Natlan OST, which I still insist should have won an award or some other important recognition because it's wonderful.
At first, I didn't like the desert, but after finishing it, I love it.
StrangeTraveller412026-01-21 12:21
Jeht's world quest and the Tanit village OSTs are unforgettable!
BananaBrodie2026-01-22 08:48
I loved the desert expansions and, honestly, exploration has only gone downhill since the 3.x cycle ended
