What makes someone lack reading comprehension? When playing Genshin /gen
sorry if this is a weird ask but I fell down a rabbit hole last night. about people who play Genshin reading comprehension. I recently got back into it after longtime and saw people saying a lot of fans who play genshin lack it. or this is normal for genshin players.
and Im kinda worried I do because I have a hard time understanding story bits or reading. might be my adhd I have. but I still makes me think I struggle terribly with it and something’s wrong. as I either forget quickly or cant remember what I read.
sorry for this small question/vent im tired it’s very late where I am and woke up with anxiety over this like an Idiot.
if it’s here by the morning I’ll delete it sorry again I’m just badly nervous right now.

Genshin/Hoyo writing *can* get a little complex due to the incongruities in translating from CN to ENG, as well as cultural/storytelling elements that don't necessarily have analogues with Western styles.
It’s redundant as f, they use 10,000 words to convey 70 and then repeat it 3 times to waste time. I wouldn’t call it complex just very text spammy/ fluff, this is why the “story” is hard to follow
That doesn't mean that stuff applies to you. It probably is your adhd, and even if it's not it's just a game. You do you. If you think you need/want to work on these struggles then go for it. If not, don't. I do recommend theory videos though, I think they're fun, I mostly watch Ashikai theory videos and she talks fast so maybe you'll like them
Winning combination, that.
I too struggle to follow now and then, because some of the quests are just so "yappy" and fluffed-up with useless prose that my brain demands me to skim and eventually just switches off entirely, if nothing interesting pops up. Especially when the Flying Lavender Melon goes on about foodstuffs again.
It's hilariously bad in Star Rail, less so in Genshin but quests like the Narzissenkreuz sidequest are still pretty .... ugh.
It's much more clear when compared to fiction written by a respected author: published novels get edited and rewritten to have focused, effective prose. Due to the development timeline of Genshin, it doesn't *always* get the time it needs for that.
I don't know when you started, but the game is out for a long time now and you said you took a break so it's okay to not know everything by heart. I often watch explanation videos about the last story part, just to make sure, I haven't misunderstood or anything.
When it comes to story stuff, I assure you that you're probably fine. The larger story of Genshin goes VERY deep and there's fragments of information littered all over the world of Teyvat. It is very easy to get confused while trying to piece that stuff together yourself. The entire reason Nod-Krai even exists right now is to help correct that issue and give the general playerbase a better understanding of some of the game's deeper lore.
If you're still confused about the current story, there's nothing wrong with asking and I'm sure plenty of people will genuinely help you understand to the best of their ability. Like someone else suggested, you could also find story summaries and theories on Youtube as well, which help to put the larger picture together so it's easier to understand. Just be mindful of the difference between a summary and a theory though, because there's a lot of both around.
My advice is to just take your time. There's over 5 years of worldbuilding to sift through. If you want to understand the story, take it slow. Go through one part of the story at a time. If you try to understand everything all at once, you'll likely just confuse yourself even more. I hope this helps a little bit.
It’s because people are lazy and brain dead, lacking media literacy, overall illiterate! Shallow even
My comment is jabbed at those who are genuinely incompetent have you seen them
_Also_ keep in mind it's all translated from Chinese which is a written language perfect for wordplay, so English can lose a lot of the original nuance as well. On top of that, often when lore is being revealed to you as a player you've got your attention split between that and making gameplay related decisions.
Basically, it's ok to be confused especially after a big break and don't beat yourself up over one video game :)
It sounds to me like you're struggling with generalized anxiety more than reading skills, and I'm sorry you're having a hard time!
Having said all that, reading comprehension and media literacy IS declining in general. It's definitely a problem but it's not something exclusive to Genshin players!
Even when text pop up on the screen on boss mechanics it gets ignored. Skills and abilities are jargon and the story is not only cut in pieces but the lore is all over the place and separated in long wait times.
In general, genshin has a massive and varied community, so sometimes people are bound to ask silly questions. Let's say there's some random puzzle, for example. There's bound to be at least one guy out of 100 million players who makes a post about asking how to complete it, when they could just take 3 seconds to read the in-game tutorial instead.
So don't worry about it, it's just a light-hearted meme. Some people take it seriously and actually look down upon people who don't care about/don't remember every single detail of the story/lore, and can't fathom that not everyone is as hardcore of a fan as them, but they're just your average miserable redditors with nothing better to do. Play at your own pace and don't let others judge you for how you engage with a singleplayer game. You can also just watch a short recap on youtube for each quest you're interested in, it's a lot easier to understand hoyo's stories if you cut away all the hours of artificially lengthened dialogue and get to the point.
Then there's the grand quests like Narzissenkreuz that if you don't dedicate your time to play it back to back, you may as well just forget about it. Like, I started it in 4.0, dropped it because I really hate underwater section, and only came around to finish it just before Nodkrai almost 2 years after. Good luck recalling your memory from that.
There's also the case of the game presenting you different sides of the same story or fiction or false information recorded/misinterpreted by the in-universe people which only add to the confusion.
Don't get me wrong, the lore and the world are rich as hell, but the way they present it is clearly meant for players to tackle it as community rather than for any single person to solo understand everything on their own.
