I wouldnt really have a problem with this if he would have had an actual reason to be in Nod Krai. But at least so far, it seems so very much unnecessary. And it was such a big plotpoint for Mondstadt. For years we wondering what that guy is doing with most of Mondstadts military...and he did just hang around? Then send a small scouting squad. If you take most of your military I expect you to have a plan.

"Mond"stadt has moon in its name so I expected something to be there with the whole moon plot but so far nothing, he didnt even really seem interested in Columbina outside of saving her because its the right thing to do. As much as I like Nefer, I honestly think he should have been the "main" character of 6.1, could have explored his fight against the abyss, the knights of favonius and their relation to Nodkrai, hyped him... Besides... there is SO MANY ways we could've had Nefer lore explored later, with much more calm instead of right in the middle of a quest.

The long quest was an intentional narrative trick--think shaky handheld camera during chaotic scene in film--to tire player out in order to catch them with the Ashru disguise. Had Dain not intervene, Nefer would have been taken out.
Varka and his knights didn't have any mean to fight Rerir, nor knowledge of his power. Not to mention Varka had already encountered Rerir twice: With Rerir wiping Varka's squad the first time; then evaded Varka's pursuit the second time (source: Varka's speech at the hideout). Researching about Rerir wouldn't work, as we had seen with Flins's attempt, since Rerir lived in ancient time.
Unless Seamus or someone from the expedition squad had something similar to Nefer's power, hers was the only choice.

In this latest patch they said the expedition was because they learned that some horrible thing was going to happen "to the north" that would "threaten all of Teyvat" and basically said all this Nod-Krai stuff took care of it. Then they said their next step would be to work with the Northern Intelligence Network to track Abyss-related shenanigans. This opens up the story possibilities for Varka and anyone else from the expedition to randomly show up for anything Abyss-related in the future.

I've had beef with this guy since 1.0. First he leaves with what seems to be the entire military force of Mondstadt (minus Klee). He leaves just Jean in charge with a skeleton crew to run a whole city-state. He took all the horses but not the cavalry captain. When we finally reach where he ventured, what has he done? No great opponents conquered. No great base of operations erected. No diplomatic ties to the region. STILL NO HORSES.
And his actual impact in the Nod Krai story? Nil. He's the most useless commander I've ever seen and I never believed the stories of his immense strength. I thought he was a fraud the whole time and he's done nothing but live up to my expectations.
