It really ticks me off when people don't remember scarameow always has been canon since Sumeru
I have seen so many posts, comments and even videos of ppl getting shocked at seeing scarameow in Durin's story.
This same happened with gate of Khaenri'ah too, a lot of people asked me if I was in beta server😭while the gate have been there for YEARS.
I know many people might not remember every single detail of genshin story but as lore & story enthusiastic, this sometimes gets very painful to watch

TLDR the lore presentation in the game till "recently" was poor to just bad.
A lot of early introduced lore ended up being "put on ice" for so long, that many people pretty much "forgot it's even in the freezer".
A lot of early game lore foreshadowing spent like 2-3 years before it was mentioned again/made relevant.
IMO its not that surprising that people forgot
The Archon Interlude, Inversion of Genesis
AFAIK, this was the first confirmation we had that some of the story books in game MAY have happened for real, and they were also hidden from deletion. The Boar Princess being the example I remember.
So, Scara was removed from history, but there was a story of a lonely kitten that did bad things because he was lashing out, and that told Scara's story.
It comes after you complete the Sumeru Archon Quests.
Like seriously this is all thanks to GenshinTok ruining so many things
If it were something else, I would have understood but how is this one possible? Scarameow is literally everywhere. How could they not remember him from AQ when they see him everywhere on social media? Instead, they thought he was a fanon created by fans😭
Is this the thumbnail image of someone's Genshin playthrough and the game's logo was added in afterward? Or was it always there in-game during this part of the quest?
But you right, now that you mention it, I do recall that "fable-esque" scarameow anecdote during Sumeru.
Well that, and this game is HUGE.
If it was a limited time event (same with Albedo and Durin at Dragonspine), then I missed it since I started playing in 5.3......
(but I knew that Scara does have a cat form since I know the merchandise of him.
Untouched grass.
You do realize there's a difference between him being depicted as a cat in a highly stylized allegory explicitly designed to obscure his identity, and him actually being perceived as cat-like by another person while fully retaining his identity right?
THAT'S why people are surprised: because it IS genuinely surprising to see him as a cat in the second case, with a 3D model no less. Maybe some people forgot, but even if they didn't it is an actual surprise.
Edit: Spelling
I would *love* if the story was gatekept by... the story, and people had to play through it to get to the current part, but that is a tall ask after five years, not to mention all the lore-relevant events (looking at you, summers and Dragonspine) that are just deleted from existence.
