The archon quest was amazing. Best the game has ever had.
The complaints were over the lack of ability to save.
InukoJon2026-01-26 01:01
You strike me as the type who says whatever media they most recently consumed is the best thing ever until the next thing comes along and you forget about the previous thing and repeat the cycle. “Best the game ever had” is quite a stretch. Or an opinion at best.
arseholierthanthou2026-01-26 01:20
Sumeru had a weak acts 3 and 4, finding scholars around the desert.
Fontaine had a weak acts 3 and 4, shutting us in Meropide.
Natlan had tremendous acts 3 and 4 but hugely dropped the ball on act 5 - an hour of parties, then some stuff where ancient heroes don't actually help us, then an easy boss fight cheesed with special abilities, and then more parties.
Generally those three are considered stronger than the three before, but if you're intent on including them as well then Inazuma rushed its ending and big chunks of Liyue were a funeral item fetch quest.
Nod-Krai is the only one to have avoided weak acts. It's hard to find objective measures of quality for any form of art, but this is the closest metric you'll probably get.
None of that is the point, though. The point is that the lion's share of the complaints were about the inability to save, not about any measure of quality, and you pretending otherwise is willful misrepresentation.
InukoJon2026-01-26 01:55
It is the point tho. It’s literally the body of my post.
lgn5i20602026-01-26 01:02
And partly the lack of ability to see the new saving indicator showing up on loading screens. Or simply guessing change of locations/sounds of teleportation might count as a save point.
Shahadem2026-01-26 08:29
You mean the worst.
The writer did nothing but constantly switching between contradictory BS and pissing on the Traveler.
InukoJon2026-01-26 17:46
Nah don’t waste your breath. It’s like talking to pokemon fans in here. They glazing mid and calling it peak lol.
The_Great_Ravioli2026-01-26 00:43
It's the same as literally every other archon quest in the game.
Don't like it? Play another game.
InukoJon2026-01-26 00:56
Oh, I am. I got auto play on and playing OSRS on the other monitor :p
issm2026-01-26 03:45
You take their advice and get downvoted anyways.
Can't win.
KyrrithK2026-01-26 00:43
And what exactly is the story supposed to do aside from that? Of course if you don't like the story, then the story parts will be boring.
uptodown122026-01-26 02:11
Remember sneaking to get the lyre, Dvalin ace combat, anti shogun training? Usually in an action game, the story mode has more gameplay like that instead of mostly just walk cutscene walk cutscene
Also usually the boss battle is a part of the gameplay and actually epic and memorable
KyrrithK2026-01-26 03:24
Remember assaulting Dottore's facility, Columbina's fragment collecting minigame, Arle + >!Childe!< team up, the fights to protect >!Sandrone!< from Dottore's minions near the end and two different boss fights? People saying it's 6 hours of uninterrupted story really just ignore those bits of gameplay. Same in previous quests, that chess sequence that everyone hated was a way to make storytelling interactive, look how that was received.
Like, would the story be improved if Columbina solo had to fight monsters as well between levels? Should Dottore's monologue have us Friday Night Funking to the rhythm to keep our attention? Should the >!Pulonia!< section make us actually read all the pages to find which one has the keyword and click on it? And when all that extra 'gameplay' gets added in, now the story is another hour long. The story is the story, and this story in particular is DENSE with lore. For those that have little interest in the lore, sure, I can imagine that's pretty boring. But for those that want to pay attention to the lore, being able to get immersed and actually follow along is more than enough entertainment, and getting distracted by having to multitask just makes it harder to follow. Sometimes the story just doesn't make sense to have 'gameplay'.
When I go to a movie, I don't need to be playing subway surfers to stay engaged to the movie. And if you do, just make sure that you're not bothering the other patrons with it.
uptodown122026-01-26 03:36
That's the thing. The gameplay is only a bit and people want more.
>Same in previous quests, that chess sequence that everyone hated was a way to make storytelling interactive, look how that was received.
If everyone hated that, that means the gameplay was suck.
>Like, would the story be improved if Columbina solo had to fight monsters as well between levels?
Uhhh, yes? Like other action games
>Should Dottore's monologue have us Friday Night Funking to the rhythm to keep our attention?
It would be fun if there's a debate feature like HSR back then
>Should the >!Pulonia!< section make us actually read all the pages to find which one has the keyword and click on it?
Absolutely, make it a mini puzzle
>When I go to a movie, I don't need to be playing subway surfers to stay engaged to the movie.
When i want to read a comic, i want to see good drawing. When i want to see anime, i want to see good animation. And when i play a game, i want to do a gameplay not just watch and read it.
KyrrithK2026-01-26 04:08
>If everyone hated that, that means the gameplay was suck.
Absolutely, make it a mini puzzle
So what's the difference here? They turned a dialogue section into a mini puzzle like you seem to want, and people didn't like it. What's a 'good' way to inject a puzzle into exposition then?
Didn't HSR also remove puzzles and combats from their story in early 3.X? Clearly people weren't enjoying having to stop and solve puzzles instead of following the flow of the story.
>Uhhh, yes? Like other action games
Ok, enjoy no Lunar reactions Columbina fighting Abyss monsters without a healer. Or do we break immersion and bring in some enemies with innate auras so you can actually get some Lunar reactions?
Plus, story fights that are interesting also risk being too hard. Plenty of people have complained about the Weekly Bosses being too hard for them, to the point where the devs added easy mode and now invincibility to them.
Even HSR, I remember getting stuck on two boss fights back to back, and having to spend a week building up the new banner characters to get past them. Not exactly what I wanted when I was trying to catch up on story so I could start the next patch's story on release.
>When i want to read a comic, i want to see good drawing. When i want to see anime, i want to see good animation. And when i play a game, i want to do a gameplay not just watch and read it.
A game isn't just one thing, at least not one like Genshin. If you want 'gameplay', there's plenty of gameplay on offer. If you want a 'cinematic' experience, then there's the story. That is what the game offers, and it's up to you what you engage with.
I feel like the only reason people who don't like the story complain about it so much is because they feel they're 'forced' to do it for primogems, so they start off in a negative mindset and them not enjoying the story just makes their mood worse. Same with events, and all the people glad that Miliastra didn't have primo rewards so they could ignore it.
Can't we just like the parts of the game we like, and let other people like the parts that they like? Why does everything have to be made for absolutely everyone? Why does something have to be BAD just because you don't like it?
uptodown122026-01-26 04:32
>story fights that are interesting also risk being too hard. Plenty of people have complained about the Weekly Bosses being too hard for them, to the point where the devs added easy mode and now invincibility to them.
Seriously??
Ok, i give up LMAO. I didn't think people would have trouble even at fighting weekly bosses.
>Can't we just like the parts of the game we like, and let other people like the parts that they like?
Usually games have options on this matter. Want story only? choose story difficulty. Want gameplay only? Click on skip story
Genshin has none of them. The story dialogue can't be skipped and the story gameplay is lackluster.
>Even HSR, I remember getting stuck on two boss fights back to back, and having to spend a week building up the new banner characters to get past them.
HSR story bosses? Dude, They don't have any timer you can bring 2 sustains and chip their health slowly while keeping yourself safe
KyrrithK2026-01-26 04:41
>Usually games have options on this matter. Want story only? choose story difficulty. Want gameplay only? Click on skip story
I can agree on this, player agency is always a positive. Though I still feel like people just need to stop playing Genshin for the gacha if they don't like the other parts of the game, because you need to do those other parts to get money for the gacha, and it just creates so much toxicity.
>HSR story bosses? Dude, They don't have any timer you can bring 2 sustains and chip their health slowly while keeping yourself safe
Well, Death kidnapping my characters with no good AOE to deal with them, and SAM burning then one-shotting my whole team had other ideas.
uptodown122026-01-26 05:05
Yeah, the healhiest way is to just stop playing when the game no longer enjoyable. Forcing to play because of sunk cost fallacy just will make people despise the game
Spieds2026-01-26 10:50
"If everyone hated that, that means the gameplay was suck."
So, you also agree that puzzles getting super easy since Inazuma patches is good thing, right?
Cuz that's the exact same reason ("everyone hated that") for why that happened. And, by proxy, the reason for boss nerfs and the like
I hate the arguments that game should be all about gameplay and insert it everywhere, cuz games should, instead, be an enjoyable experience, and it doesn't HAVE to be through gameplay alone. For all "Visual novels" nicknames, people do seem to forget that visual novels ARE still games that a good chunk of people enjoyed. And for genshin specifically, I think the current balance between gameplay and story is much better than before.
To give an example, Nilou SQ. Genuinely, inserting the fight against 2 tigers just to "add gameplay" straight up ruins the impression and pace. And not just for me, I've probably heard 10+ people say that they would prefer to have no fights at all instead. Cuz it makes sense for Nilou SQ.
I would also have much preferred to have no gameplay in act 2 of liyue instead of fetch quest "gameplay". Or at least cut it down.
There should be a balance between all, and it doesn't have to be strict for duration of the whole story. If it makes sense (aka nefer chess part), it's good to have it. If it doesn't, then trying to brute force it will more likely sour the experience for most.
Even for act 2 of Sumeru (which I love), many people complained that it's long, but like 1/3 of it is actually the "thinking" mini game, which yes, fun when it's spaced out. But when you basically do the exact same thing 4-5 times, it really should be just cut to less
Act 1 and 2 of NK had the berue infiltration, sibling dungeon, lamp part to mix stuff up (might also be forgetting few others cuz been almost half a year). Act 3 and 4 had nefer and rerir sections + story boss fight. Act 5 and 6 decided to let act 5 be story mostly, while act 6 is gameplay mostly (which made sense for story during each part). And act 7 and 8 mostly focused on story cuz of, well, story. It inserted some combat here and there, but I don't need "Dottore sent his minions, deal with them" x10 during each part, which would have just broken the pacing. It was mostly a climax for story set ups, so obviously it focused on that.
Would "I" like stuff like word search in Pulonia section? Maybe. Do I think it would have been an actually good decision for the game as a whole? No. Majority of people already refuse to read as is, adding "gameplay" like that would just have every one scream that it's nothing but padding and not gameplay, which comes back nefer chess with which I started.
So I much rather prefer having gameplay when it makes sense, even if there's not a lot, rather than have brute forced stuff at every step just to have it
uptodown122026-01-26 12:02
Well, let's agree to disagree. I like it when a game makes me do even trivial things like small battle or even just walking while the story is ongoing.
For example, in FF7 remake in Aerith part i had to keep moving forward while listening to her story. The gameplay is also rather simple. But the part when gameplay and story is nicely blended is far more immersive and interesting for me.
story and dialogue is playing i still need to move forward through the terrain and some battles.
Spieds2026-01-26 12:23
I mean, I have no problems if you like to play that way. My point is, amount of gameplay is not an objective point about how good or bad the game is. It's about overall experience, which gameplay IS part of but doesn't have to be the MAIN thing. It does not NEED to have that or much Gameplay to be good.
And just cuz you prefer it that way doesn't mean it's how it SHOULD be. Even when a lot of people say something, it doesn't mean it's always good or bad (even the point about puzzles, while I loved them and would prefer more of them, I can't just objectively say it should be more challenging, cuz obviously enough people complained to lower the difficulty. That's the problem with games going for the big audience, it just WILL NOT satisfy everyone)
A lot of people who play (and enjoying) through genshin story play for that story. If gameplay starts impeding that experience, it's not gonna be good for them. And based on 5 years of experience, it does seem to impede for majority of players' experience (even when I don't personally agree)
That's why story limits gameplay to needed parts while giving more of it outside the story (exploration, endgame, events, MW etc), so it gives a bit for everyone in different parts of the game, while trying to struck balance in each too (which, again, impossible to be for everyone or objectively in "The best" way)
uptodown122026-01-26 13:17
That's why agree to disagree. Disclaimer: it's just my subjective opinion, never said it's objective
>It does not NEED to have that or much Gameplay to be good.
Manga to read, anime to watch, and game to play. Even if an anime has a good source material, if the animation is bad well...it's a bad anime. Even if a game has great story and animation, if i the gameplay is bad well..you know it.
Hell, I don't even think genshin is a bad game. The story is great, I just think its gameplay is boring. Especially the story part
And yes genshin can't satisfy everyone, like every other games. But at least other games tried to with options regarding their story part
Want to experience the story only? Choose story difficulty, the gameplay won't hinder you that much.
Want to experience gameplay only? There's an option to skip the story dialogue.
Genshin has none. There's no skip button and the difficulty stuck at the story difficulty
Shahadem2026-01-26 08:34
When did we "assault Dottore's facility"? That was just the writer pissing on the player by declaring their own character stronger than they would ever allow the player to be. That kind of self indulgent trash is the epitomy of failed video game writing.
KyrrithK2026-01-26 08:51
So, lemme get this straight. The Traveler already has conveniently had every single exclusive power known to mankind and more, while being immune to most of the bad things too, has been the catalyst and focus for all major changes that have occurred in the story...
...and it's bad writing because they can't beat a literal god figure? I guess the Traveler better go to the Plot Armourer and buy some more MacGuffins then, if he can't even beat a single little false god.
Low_Artist_76632026-01-26 08:08
Yeah, all the things people complain about every time.
Shahadem2026-01-26 08:32
Have you played Dragon Age: Origins? Mass Effect 1/2?
Kotor?
Or heck even Baldur's Gate 3.
A good dev can use gameplay to tell parts of the story. Genshin used to be able to do that a long time ago.
Sad-Bowl-83742026-01-26 00:45
Yeah I don’t mind Genshin being dialogue heavy, but this was way too much. Six hours of visual novel.
Yet the glazers say it’s peak smh…
InukoJon2026-01-26 00:51
Fr. I like the story but I also like it when my game has actual gameplay.
ReceptionInfinite2502026-01-26 03:00
Then play a story based game that actually has "gameplay" instead of one that mostly uses the visual novel type approach.
issm2026-01-26 03:43
Lmfao, there was a thread a while ago where Genshin fans lost their shit that people thought Genshin was a visual novel.
The fans were all like "look at all the gameplay in the story, Genshin is absolutely not a visual novel, how dare you call such a revolutionary open world RPG a visual novel"
shira10010012026-01-26 01:00
six hours is not enorgh we need twenty hour quests
lgn5i20602026-01-26 01:01
It's as if thime AQs was the game's main event and that dialogue heavy stuff was requested by their playerbase since Sumeru onwards.
thwrlsgenshin2026-01-26 00:49
I have an excellent way to solve this issue for people like you guys: just watch a VOD, you can skip all the yapping.
Mysterious_Evening92026-01-26 01:00
The game should have a skip button. It’d mean that those who like the storytelling can still enjoy it, while others (such as yourself) can save time.
InukoJon2026-01-26 01:07
I enjoy the story. I also enjoy game play when I play video games. Like, I like cake. Saying I don’t want cake for 4 meals a day doesn’t mean I don’t like cake. I just wish there was actual gameplay interspersed in the 6 hour visual novel.
Low_Artist_76632026-01-26 08:09
You can save time by not playing the quests?
Mysterious_Evening92026-01-26 10:23
But what about cutscenes with hype aurafarming moments?
Low_Artist_76632026-01-26 10:36
Released on YT in a week (officially, unofficially you can watch it before the patch even live)
katbelleinthedark2026-01-26 01:31
The "yap yap yap" was the best part.
esztersunday2026-01-26 04:03
I agree, it felt like a visual novel, I had the same problem with Honkai Star Rail.
Shahadem2026-01-26 08:28
And the yapping contradicts itself while only really functioning to gas up the writer's characters while denigrating the player by treating their character like a peon.
The most recent AQ in 6.3 made me about as mad as the Kai Leng on Thessia segment in Mass Effect 3, largely considered to be the worst or second worst segment in the trilogy (the "artistic integrity" ending is considered to be worse by some people). But the anger lasted much longer as the AQ was 5 hours while the ME3 segment was only like 10-15 minutes.
I never got pissed of when playing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Probably because the writer treated the player's character with respect. They let me do the things in the story I would logically want to do. They never made my character grovel in front of their characters. If one of their characters declared that they were stronger than me I got to make them eat those words.
Finally it's not possible for Dottore to create a moon. The moons in the game are sources of magical energy. Major sources. They are moon sized and produce energy from nothing. An artificial construct is not going to be able to produce huge energy from nothing. What Dottore did is essentially declaring he built a nuclear fission powerplant by drawing a picture of a gas can.

Or heck even Baldur's Gate 3.
A good dev can use gameplay to tell parts of the story. Genshin used to be able to do that a long time ago.
Yet the glazers say it’s peak smh…
The fans were all like "look at all the gameplay in the story, Genshin is absolutely not a visual novel, how dare you call such a revolutionary open world RPG a visual novel"
