I want to play Genshin Impact, but I feel like I simply cannot.

Many years ago, my cousin introduced me to the world of gacha games, and I started with Genshin. I experienced the launch of Honkai: Star Rail, as well as Zenless Zone Zero. Along the way, I made many mistakes: I ruined accounts, lost others, started over multiple times, and played many different gacha games—both as a free-to-play player and by spending money. And yet, I always end up coming back to the same place.

I want to play Genshin. I truly love its story, its world, and its characters. However, the game feels fundamentally deficient when compared to its siblings. Across nearly every system shared among HoYoverse games, Genshin consistently feels like the weakest entry: the energy system, the farming methods, rewards, pulls, endgame content, and even the way the story is presented. If a particular storyline does not interest me, unlike in other titles, I cannot skip it—and that feels genuinely frustrating.

This situation constantly makes me think about how the game could be better, or how it could have been better. Sometimes I imagine what Genshin might look like once it reaches its end of service, when perhaps a fan or a group of fans could create a private server or an offline version. Other times, I simply think about how things should have unfolded differently.

For example, Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero have both given away several free 5-star characters. As with many other posts that revolve around hypothetical scenarios and speculative discussions, I began wondering what kind of pattern Genshin could have followed when it comes to giving away free characters—similar to ZZZ, which gifted characters whenever a Void Hunter was released, an important lore figure and a major meta-defining unit.

Taking into account that Genshin’s banner system works differently, and acknowledging that I am speaking as a casual observer with limited knowledge, I looked into the history of banners and started thinking: what if the character released after an Archon had been free? This follows a similar logic to ZZZ, where a character was given away knowing they would be overshadowed by the major release of the moment—the obvious “must-pull” character. Knowing in advance that one character would be free could have helped players manage their resources more confidently and encouraged them to pull for the Archon instead.

This is merely an idea, and I want to emphasize that I am approaching this as an outsider. I genuinely want to hear every opinion and criticism. Alternatively, which character do you think should have been free?

For me, those characters would have been Sangonomiya Kokomi, Yoimiya, Baizhu, and Citlali.
