I saw a post on the gaming Reddit asking something like “Which game doesn’t deserve the hate it gets?” and I immediately thought about Genshin. Searched through the comments and nobody mentioned it… I want to know if it’s just my opinion: most of the hate the game gets comes against its gatcha nature, which granted can be damaging if you don’t have self-control or have addiction/gambling tendencies. The other hate factor is pure sinophobia, and that’s a rabbit hole I don’t even want to go into.
What am I missing? The community is not “more toxic” than other games: with N million players, you will find a lot of loud toxic people, but the majority are silent players who just want to have fun, experience the story or explore.
I really want to know if my bias is blinding me from something else…. My comment on the post:

They pick on Genshin because it's very likely the first (if not only) gacha game to ever get popular enough for them to even notice.
Yeah, compared to that Genshing literally gives you characters for free lmao.
But yeah.
any fandom say stupid shit, must be the hoyoshill pretending to be part of X fandom
Its just easier to shit on genshin and CC also get more views farma draming genshin
Like, most people who don't play gachas don't even know it's hated, cause the hate usually comes from other gacha players. You'll find tribalism in lots of gaming communities, but I've never seen it as prevalent as in gacha communities.
The other side might really just be the gambling aspect. I've not seen any gacha being mentioned in the thread you've linked, so far.
Just my observation though.
Ultimately, I feel that it's just easy for people to reinforce a negative perception against things they don't understand, or put differently, things far removed from their own sphere of life. Whether that be gacha systems, anime culture, China in general, or something else, all can be things that people just never get exposed to that much. These things aren't exclusive to Genshin, but Genshin became so popular that it's much easier to join in with the crowd whose reaction to that popularity is far more negative than it realistically needs to be.
Doesn't help that like many big pieces of media, Genshin has a really bad online fandom. Again, not exclusive to Genshin, but when you're looking from the outside at anything similar, you don't really remember those chill fans who just want to have fun breaching your side of the internet, you see and remember all the negative, more clickable stuff, so it becomes yet another reaffirmation of someone's negative bias stemming from that lack of understanding.
At the end of the day, a lot of the details about this whole conversation stem back to issues with online culture in general I think. Best we can do is to try our best to be mindful of the way we engage with the internet and to be mindful of our judgements of other things the same we ideally want to stop others from unfairly judging something like Genshin.
Before Genshin, gacha was just lol gullible idiots spending thousands on waifu jpgs. Raid Shadow Legends meme goes here.
But Genshin was a real game, with a marketing budget. It got people from all across the world hooked, and it's flooded anime and comic conventions, YouTube ads, sponsored videos, gaming site articles, in a way that no previous gacha ever did
Visibility is a two-way street. A massive community means people can't just ignore it, they have to have an opinion on it because it keeps coming up in conversation, and that means haters are gonna hate
