Varka hasnt really been doing much

I just realized Varka hasnt been doing much in the plot because he's literally not even a character yet. They probably hadnt built him till now when we're getting the demo videos.

He keeps getting left out of the fights

Yeah I feel they really showed his leadership prowess, which I would've expected since he's the GRAND MASTER of a group of knights. if he was just a dumb brute that's into fighting all the time it'd be weird, but he held back when needed and stood behind when the group/situation needed it and distributed forces meaningfully

I think the strongest man in the room should do a little more fighting than a pink child and a priestess. Nefer would fit the coordinator role more since Varka doesn't even know the nod krai cast that well.

People play them down, but without Varka and Dainsleif the archon quests couldn't have been completed.

Varka literally staged the plan against Rerir as well as providing most of the networking for it to work in the first place, as well as enlisting the help of the hexenzirkel which has been crucial throughout the later half of the archon quest.

That's because they're not trying to sell the character yet. They will do that during his banner, like for all characters we get to "trial" in the story, during their active banner.

Columbina and Jahoda have been shown doing combat in cutscenes in the AQ before their actual playable release. Whereas, Varka gets to stab the ground twice.

This is pretty common for characters who debut well ahead of their banners.

Dehya, for example, had that whole thing where she sold her original weapon, probably because they were still refining her claymore design, and they offscreened a lot of her fights initially. When she first got to strut her stuff onscreen, she was using a Waster Greatsword.

You say that when we also had Navia with us 2 acts of the fontaine story and she is was also the char coming out the patch post archon quest. She had plenty of great onscreen moments before her banner came out, unlike Varka :(

Characters who do X or Y off screen is not good storytelling, text makes very little impact on people but visuals leave a lasting impression

But a 5 second cutscene, beginning or end goes a long way to remind people Varka has been doing his own shit

They have enough time for NPCs like Chasca's sister so i think grandmaster of mondstadt should be a higher priority

Playability is not really a metric for character roles in a story.

Those NPCs are supporting characters in the story, just as Varka is a supporting character in this one. I don't think the writers take account your personal ranking of characters

And it's not playability in Varka's case. It;s him being a head of nation, one of the strongest humans in the world, and a knight of boreas. If that doesn't warrant more screentime than a random chick that died so that Chasca could have a sad backstory than i don't know what does.

The metric is whatever serves the story as the writers want it to. He could be president of the universe and still just be a side character if what they want to is tell the story of the crackhead down the street.

My point is, no one "deserves" screen time by their titles alone if it does not serve the purpose of the story

They create the story. If something serves it it's because they decided so. If they decide a one time natlan npc made for a sob story is more important than someone like varka then it;s just a bad story. It's like hyping up Alice for years and then she never appears again and instead we have a 2 hour long story about a girl selling toilet paper.

I like plenty of unimportant characters and im not expecting anything from them but you can't just keep hyping up someone for 5 years and then do a rug pull. Especially since we're talking about a company that dedicated two separate events to itto's beetles and hu tao's rapping. They give absolutely no shit about saving screentime.

Honestly it felt like hoyo just some sort of write him without any clear goal in mind what's he's doing. Now we're at nord krai and near snezhnaya and realize shit, varka plot haven't been resolved and scrambling to find him a role without outshining nord krai 5 star. Lauma flins nefer get spotlight because they're nord krai character and we don't know anything about them prior to nord krai.
