Well Hu Tao and Xiangling probably wouldn't really grow anymore. I'm not sure how old they are, since I don't think they usually ever confirm specific ages, but even a 16-20 year old is usually pretty much done growing
The real answer is kind of hand wavey. It seems to imply years are passing with each one, roughly alongside real world time. But obviously they won't be gradually aging the models up. You kind of have to allow for some suspension of disbelief

Asian ladies don't age until they hit 60

Then they turn into Madam Ping overnight.
ShimoriShimamoto2026-01-30 17:24
Just like how Madam Ping did!

That awkward moment when you're mid-thirties, and the airport customs official asks why you're not in school. So yeah, I can buy Hu Tao and Xiangling still looking young.
Now Yao yao on the other hand...she's harder to explain. It would've been funny if her new skin came with a change to teen model, but I guess I could see why they didn't do that.

I think is one of those time called suspension of disbelief, that even a game like Genshin can totally avoid.
Or are you saying me that nobody physically changed in 4-5 Latern Rite?
Eclipse-Lily2026-01-30 15:50
Canonically Lantern Rite is a yearly festival. In the 2023 Lantern Rite, Shenhe talked about how she remembers "Last year's Lantern Rite", which was when she debut as a character (Version 2.4 in 2022).
As for why time doesn't seem to pass? Probably to keep the status quo.
FatalWarrior2026-01-30 16:04
Lantern Rite should be a yearly event, and the general fan consensus is that each region after the first 2 is about a year (harder to assess the first two).
Characters are not allowed to age because it would change the "product" you "purchased". Just accept that Teyvat is glitching since the Traveller woke up and everyone stopped physically ageing.

However much you hate to hear it
Teyvat has its own laws
Apprehensive_Shift702026-01-30 16:43
they do age up, just the model don't change, in the manga during the festival Amber cant drink alcohol yet, during the launch of the game a year has passed and she can drink now
rekage992026-01-30 17:43
Ya know, that is an interesting topic. I’m pretty sure lantern rite signaling a new year is canon in game. So it really has been 5 years.
I wonder if we will ever get model updates to account for aging? Realistically, I doubt it. I don’t actually expect them to do something so drastic. But it would be cool to see characters like klee and yao yao age, get new models and maybe even a new kit?
Maybe release new skins for adult characters that’s just a new outfit and some age lines on their faces?
BlackTemplarKNB2026-01-30 17:52
she's shortie adult
tj22862026-01-30 18:21
Noone ages in Tevat. Everyone spawned at the age they are now with only memories of a past that were implanted into them.
KamijyoTeio2026-01-30 19:12
Blame Istaroth. Ngl, this time shenanigan always funny in live service game.
haggerton2026-01-30 19:35
Quick, bonk this one before they realize ~~the Matrix~~ Teyvat isn't real!
Miserable-Caramel4662026-01-30 20:26

Because we're in a timey-wimey soup where time only nominally passes. Lantern Rite is a yearly event of which we've seen five. Also, no more than a year or two has passed since we started our journey. Both of these contradictory timelines are 100% true.
But the wackiness mostly applies to child characters and NPCs. Some folks argue about characters like Klee and Sayu and Diona as being slow-aging or already adult - but there's no way that excuse is going to fly for Yao Yao or Timmie or the kids playing on the boat in Liyue Harbor. They would have changed SIGNIFICANTLY if five years had really passed.
Both your girls here (Hu Tao and Xiangling) were most likely already adults. They ain't growing any more than they already have, and could easily look the same if they're transitioning from early 20's to mid 20's.
