If Genshin gets official Linux support rather than merely being unofficialy tolerated running on Linux, I will finally switch
__breadstick__2026-01-30 16:03
That's all I'm waiting for now yeah
alvinvin002026-01-30 16:34
same here, can't wait to finally nuke Windows out from my ROG Ally
Talithea2026-01-30 17:44
Is the only reason I still have windows. I can play on steam deck, but as of late Genshin notified me of "unknown activity" on my device.
Civil-Cauliflower3772026-01-30 16:38
I am a noob in this field, may I know why?
BobbyWibowo2026-01-30 17:18
If it is officially on Steam, then there is a big chance they will likewise *officially support Linux*, by virtue of Steam providing Linux compatibility layer via [Proton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_\(software\)).
HoYo does not need to go the extra mile by providing a Linux native client, as long as they do not willingly break Wine/Proton via their anti-cheat.
But the biggest reason people are hopeful is because Genshin is already ***un****officially* ***tolerating*** *Linux*, because their anti-cheat till this day still allows you to manually run Genshin via Wine/Proton, with no reports of people being banned within the past few years.
Meaning people are now more so hoping for an *official statement* that it is allowed.
Having the game officially be on Steam is a very big step towards that hope.
If they simply do not disable Proton checklist from the game's Steam page, that will be enough of a statement that it is at least not bannable, even if they won't provide CS technical support.
TheBirdNamedSparrow2026-01-30 17:48
I am pretty sure mihoyo protect (the AntiCheat) has been modified such that it runs on user-level instead of kernel -level if it detects linux environment, so they have already taken measures to allow linux.
Though during the time when there were a bunch of coop hackers active, they did kick linux users out of EU server but even then no one was banned.
BobbyWibowo2026-01-30 17:53
Ah, so that's how it works under Linux, thanks for the info. And yeah, I did hear about the co-op thing, though as you said, fortunately it didn't go as far as banning.
On that note though, I think that's why they now have co-op bans, yeah? Basically they no longer need to go so far as to ban the accounts themselves, depending on what triggers it.
I feel like I've first seen co-op bans only in recent months, so it might've been a relatively new punishment tier?
ViolentPurpleSquash2026-01-30 17:50
Hey- there are issues running the game on Linux right now. The AC doesn't play nice on NA/EU servers
PH_0072026-01-30 19:19
Huh, first time I hear of a game having different anticheat behaviour on different regions.
Monsterlime2026-01-30 20:22
Works fine for me on EU, Linux.
martymarty0042026-01-30 17:20
There is a compatibility layer (Wine) that allows running Windows programs on Linux.
Valve chose Linux as the base OS for their new hardware (it’s open source, more stable, lighter and free from strict licensing fees/requirements), so they invested and contributed a lot to Wine.
They have released a derivative of Wine called Proton, which is more optimized and has specific patches for games (also, they can use it as testing ground since they have full control over it).
Basically, except a few cases the only thing preventing games from running on Linux is the anticheat software, which requires low level access to the entire system (which Linux doesn’t grant, both for security and stability reasons).
Server-side anticheat is not affected by this (but increases costs for the developers), but now some of these pieces of software also added Linux compatibility (at the cost of effectiveness). Basically, it’s up to the developers on how to handle the issue. Some add compatibility (Overwatch), some decided to ban Linux players (GTAV Online), others didn’t add compatibility but don’t really care (Genshin).
At the moment, there are unofficial ways to run the game on Linux, but they work just because HoYo doesn’t ban for this reason alone (for now).
Users running the game on Linux (like me) could be easily detected and banned. (Telemetry reports fps, which I have unlocked and set to 120, and the anticheat does not work locally because wine can’t make the driver run, so it doesn’t report back anything).
If they bring the game into the Steam client, it would be run inside the proton environment, which is trusted.
TheRealMalkior2026-01-30 17:38
Why? Because you haven't done a proper research regarding this topic.
Viciant2026-01-30 16:40
Linux support is pretty much confirmed at this point. They are EOSing PS4 they need a new platform for that loss of income from PS4, and Linux is the perfect option here as Steam Machines are coming soon and Deck is already quite popular. They don't even need to port games; they just have to keep anticheat compatible with Proton.
SoloWaltz2026-01-30 17:16
> They are EOSing PS4 they need a new platform for that loss of income from PS4
No offense. It's just that platform is the PS5.
Cheese_Grater1012026-01-30 17:34
wdym Linux is the PS5 😎
kleanthis_2026-01-30 17:18
its not even tolarated thought, thats the problem. Like just before 6.0 there where outright bans on linuus users for using windows emulations to play. And also since then, its been harder to play on Mac as well. They just dont care
Secret_Conclusion_932026-01-30 17:28
Nope
They're banned because they use AAGL, which for some time modified game file to fix issues/unlock fps. The anti cheat just collect the data about user changing files, and then ban them later on ban wave.
People who are on pure Proton and not doing any mod are still fine until now.
There was an issue that only affect Linux (100% CPU usage), and they do fix it. Meaning that they aware of people playing on Linux.
Lesteross2026-01-30 17:55
Genshin and zzz for me. If that happens I'm switching to Linux and not coming back. But I'm going to be realistic here and say: is genshin going to steam? Maybe. Is it going to be playable on Linux/steam deck? Unlikely, but some comments in this thread give me some hope.
TheBirdNamedSparrow2026-01-30 18:06
Both games are already playable
Lesteross2026-01-30 18:28
Sure, but not officially. I know they aren't chasing people who play on Linux, but I'm still not sure about it and I'm not risking loosing my account once they'll start banning account using 3rd party software like this.
chuuey2026-01-30 20:41
It won't be official until they release native version. Forget about wine of you want official Linux release.
Fallen_Element_2026-01-30 18:16
Same. I'm pretty sure they are aware of proton and its capabilities. If I hear nothing bad about it then I may end up being ready to switch as well.
chuuey2026-01-30 20:31
They'd rather release native Linux version without emulation etc.
Fallen_Element_2026-01-30 20:40
Yeah that would be much better, but I guess their kernel level anti cheat may pose a problem. Will have to see.

You’d literally have to tie Da Wei up to get anything for free in Genshin. They are just so against it for some reason unlike literally all their other games :(
Original-Shallot58422026-01-30 20:12
Kinda funny that I told you yesterday that we dont play the same game but here you just confirm it.
We are getting yearly since 5.0 a free 5 standard of our choice. In multiple patches from different events we get either 4 star weapons or a 4 star character (wich 4 stars are very usable still in genshin, cough cough)
And we also get 4 constelations per region(year?) for free on top of some free resources wich include elixirs for artifact crafting. And the pool of character is pretty decent.
And you also get free pulls for anniversary, lantern rite. If those you can count but I guess they only count for their other games to mantain agenda.
So, how do you manage to not play the same game as the rest of us?
Water_Attunement2026-01-30 20:41
The person you replied to was using hyperbole, sure. But their point was more about not getting free things on par with other hoyo games. We’ve gotten free things for mostly irrelevant characters while other Hoyo games have given multiple free new 5 stars. There is also a lot of QoL in the other games that we do not have. We have no way of getting old event weapons, for instance. It’s arbitrary and maddening, but I’m sure it’s something they’re holding in their back pocket to drop when they need to pretend like they’re doing something for our benefit, which in turn causes more people to claim “see, they do care!” When they could have done it all along.
Martian_on_the_Moon2026-01-31 00:17
Other Hoyo games also has twice as fast 5 star release which resulted in faster powercreep. Yes, Genshin also has powercreep (since Natlan, with the precursor being Neuvillette) but it took a good while to reach that point. HSR and ZZZ also started this trend of spending event or ''800% value packs'', not to mention how many packs are in the shop. Funnily enough, the 5 stars which were given for free were male characters and furry. Last HSR 4 star was released in September 2024.
Don't get me wrong, Genshin needs QoL. I don't know if they are playing long game or have difficult time implementing artefacts loadouts. I thought we would get them during Natlan cause it is nation of war, right? I expect that for next anniversary, we will get yearly 5 star character to pick (outside newest ones, Archons, Neuvilette, etc) or maybe weapon as well. I also hope that Chronicled Banners become permanent.
REMERALDX2026-01-30 23:02
So against it that they spam spending events and other money drainers in other games while genshin haven't changed shit since skins introduction
MrCovell2026-01-30 23:24
I always say I appreciate that when it’s brought up. But appreciating it and wanting more from the game are not mutually exclusive.
tablecloth1012026-01-30 16:01
Is there any benefit in having the game on Steam?
Kvendy_2026-01-30 16:04
I think network share, where you can update the game on one device and all the devices on the same network get updated, it will benefit me a lot we have 4 PCs
vglisten2026-01-30 16:16
how about I put my updates inside you
LEGENDARYQUEEN_2026-01-30 16:46
bonk
Esusbek2026-01-30 16:24
Thats if they put updates on steam servers, which i doubt. The most you are getting with network share is updates to launcher itself
BobbyWibowo2026-01-30 17:24
Steam won't help for this. Their Epic version doesn't put the game's main payload on Epic CDNs either.

Possibly official support for steam OS and through this for Linux in general.
I know people are running it already, but it's merely unofficially tolerated by Hoyo not banning such accounts instead of officially supported

Light_and_Lillies2026-01-30 17:34
I don't use steam, what benefit is there?
kirbyverano1232026-01-30 17:42
Other than basic Steam features like native voice chat, screenshots, built in web browsing, custom controller layout, etc. It would allow the game to be played on a Steam Deck and in the future the Steam Machine and by proxy the game is "officially" playable in Linux. Some peeps also want to see live playtime.
If you don't care about any of those then there's no need to switch over.
Light_and_Lillies2026-01-30 17:44
Ahh cool
Abedeus2026-01-30 18:43
Not all games on Steam are Steam Deck compatible though, especially many online games. But we'll have to see.
Notosk2026-01-30 20:40
Genshin is
kayrid392026-01-30 20:47
Can confirm genshin is, I’ve been playing on steam deck since 4.5
Unkn0wnTh2nd3r2026-01-31 01:59
but is it natively playable? last i checked you either had to dual boot windows or do some linux fuckshit
kayrid392026-01-31 05:05
I was saying it was steam deck compatible. No, there's no native linux client and setting it up is honestly super easy even if you aren’t familiar with linux. It's gonna work the same way, just launched with steam instead and hopefully means no issues using proton anymore
TetraNeuron2026-01-31 07:21
miHoYo's anticheat works with steamOS linux?!
kayrid392026-01-31 10:25
Tangentially lol it works with proton, which valve built on top of wine, which is a compatibility layer (like an emulator, but technically isn’t one) used to run windows programs on linux and other OS, at least macOS.
My bro's always played on linux (arch), since 1.3. I remember the community had to make an unofficial patch each update, but other than that, it's always worked
TehCrazyCat2026-01-30 22:16

Ill_Cardiologist_2122026-01-30 19:22
does the current playtime also get transferred over or will it start counting only after linking?
frostN0VA2026-01-30 20:48
I've never heard about playtime transfers on Steam. When a game that was available elsewhere gets a Steam release your Steam playtime starts from zero. It was like that at least in the older days.
gareth_gahaland2026-01-30 21:35
Would steam support help with that ?
I mean like set your playtime to whatever it is.
ravearamashi2026-01-30 21:45
Could maybe ask but i don’t think so
Howrus2026-01-30 21:55
> Would steam support help with that ?
Nope, that's why people use idlers to inflate their game time.
WingsDT2026-01-30 22:23
>inflate their game time
Just curious, what's the point of doing this?
Howrus2026-01-30 23:08
If you can't be better than other people in some meaningful competition - you could always create new discipline and beat them there.
So there exist group of people who think that having 1000 hours in game make their opinion more valuable\reliable\etc, and they use idle programs to increase it.
P.S. There was a time when in our group of friends we were "measuring" our PC uptime. My Windows 2000 NT reached 411 days but then sudden 10 hours power outage destroyed all my hopes of winning this competition :]
kirbyverano1232026-01-31 05:05
You can ask the same thing for reddit bots farming karma.
It's basically Steam equivalent to imaginary internet points.
frostN0VA2026-01-30 21:56
Well you can try asking them but I doubt that's something they'd be able to do.
Howrus2026-01-30 21:55
> does the current playtime also get transferred over
No, why it should? Steam count game time separately on their own, and I'm not even sure that Genshin expose it anywhere for external services to read.
Any_Snack_102026-01-30 20:38
I already play on Steam Deck but installed as 'not a Steam game' lol. Still though will be good to have native support and not have to fiddle with launchers and what not.
lostn2026-01-30 20:53
not necessarily.
Steam deck has issues with steam games that use anti cheat
TehCrazyCat2026-01-30 22:17
Only if the developer actively blocks Linux
There are plenty of online games with anticheat that work well on Linux, like Genshin, Zenless, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, The Finals...

Party_Custard51872026-01-30 17:03
There is a certain fanbase well-known for having a hate boner for genshin so.....
CharlesEverettDekker2026-01-30 17:23
Yeah, they're called Genshin fans
r/FatuiHQ for example
TuneACan2026-01-30 17:26
Yeah. Genshin is kind of like how Fortnite was mid-pandemic in having a very strong hatedom.
I can understand why it had one during its early days, but seeing the hatedom still standing today is kind of flabbergasting.
kirbyverano1232026-01-30 17:46
The majority of the gaming community has a hate boner for Genshin while Uma Musume and Limbus Company gets a free pass.
MaitieS2026-01-30 18:42
Because most of the people who have a hate boner on stuff on reddit are... really frekaing stupid. Especially when most of these people will complain how predatory Genshin is, but when you mention Valve's wholesome gambling, and NFT market they're all like: Yo this isn't about Volvo! :D
Khoakuma2026-01-30 19:22
It is consistently funny to me that gamers at large view Gabe as some sort of morality saint of gaming when Valve was the one who pioneered loot boxes in cs go and tf2 which made Gabe a multi-billionaire lmao.
MaitieS2026-01-30 18:41
The funniest thing is that these haters are still copy pasting the same comments like in 2020... Literally didn't even update the script.

I still can't understand the benefit of using steam to play the game.
No drawback either tho but why go through the trouble?
katravallie2026-01-30 18:23
To people already using steam for a bazillion other games, it is very convenient to also have genshin on steam. Other than that, game time played tracker, Using Steam wallet for payments. For me ,the steam wallet is the most important part as Genshin's in game purchases cost higher in a country with weaker currency.

I came back to the game 10 days ago after maybe 4 years and went through the trouble of adding Genshin to Steam as a non-Steam game, adding custom art and installing a plugin to count non-Steam game hours just to have it on Steam. I can guarantee you there's a lot of people that only play games on Steam, Steam is that good and Hoyo knows how much people like it, that's why they are doing it too.

idk if you can access that page from ingame maybe you can if you hit feedback but i am not sure about that tbh

This is so good! I get Steam gift cards at a discounted rate, so now I can save more money.

Though during the time when there were a bunch of coop hackers active, they did kick linux users out of EU server but even then no one was banned.
On that note though, I think that's why they now have co-op bans, yeah? Basically they no longer need to go so far as to ban the accounts themselves, depending on what triggers it.
I feel like I've first seen co-op bans only in recent months, so it might've been a relatively new punishment tier?
No offense. It's just that platform is the PS5.
Yes, the flamenco dance too.
Don't get me wrong, Genshin needs QoL. I don't know if they are playing long game or have difficult time implementing artefacts loadouts. I thought we would get them during Natlan cause it is nation of war, right? I expect that for next anniversary, we will get yearly 5 star character to pick (outside newest ones, Archons, Neuvilette, etc) or maybe weapon as well. I also hope that Chronicled Banners become permanent.
while ordering the data from hoyo takes a few months...
I know people are running it already, but it's merely unofficially tolerated by Hoyo not banning such accounts instead of officially supported
> Steam's controller software
> Steam wallet can be used to make MTX purchases.
> Steam community hub. Which has guides, forums, reviews, etc
Example, please cs2 to get loot box that you can sell for steam credits
If you don't care about any of those then there's no need to switch over.
My bro's always played on linux (arch), since 1.3. I remember the community had to make an unofficial patch each update, but other than that, it's always worked
I mean like set your playtime to whatever it is.
Nope, that's why people use idlers to inflate their game time.
Just curious, what's the point of doing this?
So there exist group of people who think that having 1000 hours in game make their opinion more valuable\reliable\etc, and they use idle programs to increase it.
P.S. There was a time when in our group of friends we were "measuring" our PC uptime. My Windows 2000 NT reached 411 days but then sudden 10 hours power outage destroyed all my hopes of winning this competition :]
It's basically Steam equivalent to imaginary internet points.
No, why it should? Steam count game time separately on their own, and I'm not even sure that Genshin expose it anywhere for external services to read.
Steam deck has issues with steam games that use anti cheat
There are plenty of online games with anticheat that work well on Linux, like Genshin, Zenless, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, The Finals...
r/FatuiHQ for example
I can understand why it had one during its early days, but seeing the hatedom still standing today is kind of flabbergasting.
Steamworkshop + miliastra collab???
Dota collab with genshin? PA with arlechino skin?
I beg you HoYo
Please make it compatible with Proton.
Please make it compatible with Proton.
Please make it compatible with Proton.
Please make it work on Linux so I can get away from Windows. It's literally the only reasons I am still on Windows. KDE largely solved accessibility too. But Genshin being tied to Win32 Kernel Anti-Cheat. This would be amazing!!
No drawback either tho but why go through the trouble?
Oh and the wallet changes the price? MIght check that out lol
Thanks
