She is a critical story character in the overarching plot of the game.
She's one of the Four Shades, four godlike beings that the creator of the world created in order to help maintain the world. She is the Shade of Death, responsible for ensuring that people die and pass on to the afterlife as they should.
The other Shades are:
\- Istaroth, the Shade of Time (the one with the enormous halo): She is the god of fate, who basically wrote the history of the world from the distant past into the far future.
\- Rhinedottir, the Shade of Life (the one with different colored eyes). The Shade of Life is responsible for the creation of all life in the world. Until recently, the Shade of Life was a different being known as Naberius - but Rheindottir, a powerful Alchemist, found her heart and consumed it to become the Shade of Life herself.
\- Amsoday, the Shade of Space (doesn't appear directly in this video, but you can see an image of her). She's the Unknown God who stopped the Twins from escaping the world at the beginning of the game. We still don't know for certain why she did it.
