Question about attire for Lantern Rite

I know this is a very random question, but would it be offensive to wear a kimono to an in person Lantern Rite event I’m attending? It’s an event specifically for Genshin Impact and Lantern Rite, and I was considering cosplaying Xiao and wearing an old kimono I have (since I don’t have his canon outfit, only the wig). A kimono is Japanese attire, but Lantern Rite is based off of real life Chinese New Year festivals. The Lantern Rite festival I’m going to is a casual event and it is in America, so I’m probably overthinking the idea that a kimono could be viewed as offensive, but I figured it’d be a good idea to ask the opinion of others.

With China / Japan relations what they are right now, I probably wouldn't wear a Kimono.

I don't really understand how a kimono makes for a Xiao cosplay but I suppose if you explain that's what you're doing and since it's an event for the game, nobody will make much of a fuss.

Do you know the people in attendance? Are these people going to be high-school or college aged? If yes to both of those, you are probably fine. If this were a more public event with a variety of age groups and around people you dont know, I might be more cautious.

I know a few of the people, but besides that it’s all random. The event hasn’t gained too much attention at least on social media, but it’s also a public event so there will likely also be passerby who stop to look around a bit too

At worst, people might find it offensive and at best, people might think you're ignorant and equate all East Asian clothing as the same thing. Given the fraught relationships between China and Japan atm, in my opinion that's even more reason not to wear it.

I wouldn’t be offended but I’d assume you were one of those people that lump all East Asian cultures together or think everything is Japanese. 😅 Though I don’t think most people would bat an eye or even notice honestly. But let’s be real, Xiao is not Inazuman. Lantern Rite is not a Japanese-style festival. There’s no good reason for ‘Xiao’ to be in a kimono at this event.
