This game is way more than just a gacha to many of us
I quit the game in 2023 after playing since launch, and picked it up about a week ago. Today I was just walking around in Liyue, picking up flowers and accidentally started a dialogue with Madam Ping. Remembering her from 2020 brought back many memories, and I realised Genshin meant much more than a game to me back then.
Just wanted to appreciate the game as no other game brought back such nostalgia before, and I am looking forward to see where the story takes us.
What are your best memories playing genshin? I'd love to hear them

…except *Candace.*
edit: i even thought i knew all of the sumerian characters, yet somehow forgot that Candace released in 3.1!
It is VERY RARE for any live service game to last this long while still delivering high quality updates and still making billions. Genshin is basically an anomaly and we are now seeing open world gacha games hit its stride with Anata, Endfield, Neverness to Everness, and 2 more games all coming out in 2026 and 2027 (hopefully with some breathing room lol). It took 5 years to get it right, which is about how much time it took to craft Genshin at a serious pace (genshin started even longer as a concept prior) without any previous game as an example.
So this game is quite special and why I stuck with it for so long. To see where they go from here.
Its actually the closest thing to a long form MMO without being an MMO with the update cycle and world its built. One day there will be a big ass MMO that people can make $$$$ in for reals, and literally live their whole lives in this game doing all sorts of shit. And games like this will be part of that precursor.
In terms of favorite memories, ill never forget how emotional Tighnaris story quest was with Karkata. Putting the mechanical pieces on its owner until realizing it wont work
In terms of happy memories, one of the previous lantern rite and Shenhe is on the wharf. She talks about how shes come to cherish where she is and everyone around her, then ends up smiling for the first time in game and it melted my heart
The characters, from playable mains to NPC mechanical crabs, really are the heart of Genshin. <3
Seems this is one of those times where 100%-ing your way through the game pays off. :)
I played in 1.1 and my first 5* character is Childe. With this, I was interested in his story(like I did to all my mains) and found out about her swordswoman mentor and how he is not able to even make her fight her with 2 hands
So I thought to myself "huh, would be interesting to play as her or even to see her"
Then throughout the years I managed to develop a favorite weapon to use(sword) and a favorite element(cryo) to the point that I even take my latest main(Ayaka) to c6r1(thank you eternal banner).
Then there she was in Fontaine AQ and how I fell in love with her.
And now here we are with my new main and I went to full circle where my first main is her student and here I am maining the mentor.
Given your first comment, I'm getting the impression "playing the game" to you is mostly farming artifacts and doing endgame modes? Because that's a **tiny** slice of the game, despite how much those parts are overrepresented in the vocal online community.
I've been playing for roughly two years now, Genshin's easily become my "main game", and I'm continuing to love it... and I only went through the Abyss far enough to get the Xiangling/Collei cons, and haven't touched Theatre/Onslaught once (beyond the intro "quest"/dialogue).

If you're looking for more to experience that isn't the "same thing over and over", have you:
* Caught up on every archon quest?
* Every world quest?
* Every hidden exploration objective?
* Every story quest?
* Every hangout?
* Every anecdote?
* Every story-based daily commission?
* Maxed exploration percentage in every region?
* Unlocked every viewpoint
* Maxed every region's reputation rank?
* Completed assorted easy achievements which you simply hadn't done?
* Obtained every recipe *and* unlocked auto-cook for all of them?
* Collected every book *and* read them?
* Bought every fishing shop item?
* And that's without even mentioning the games-within-a-game that are wonderland, the teapot, the card game, and the rhythm game.
And I know there are a lot of players with more time invested into Genshin
But eh; I like Genshin, but that doesn’t mean I need to have it entertain me 24/7, so I'm pretty satisfied with the game right now.
Some additional things you could add to expand your list of things to do:
- Unlocked every achievement currently possible
- Placed all friendship sets in teapot and got the rewards for all your chars
- Read all profile notes of the characters you have
- Read all the friendship dialogues in teapot
Indeed, and this is also an important point here. We very often see people in online gaming places complaining that a game has gotten "boring" or there's "nothing to do"... after they've put multiple thousands of hours into it. Like, yeah, that's entirely okay and not a bad thing.

> Read all profile notes of the characters you have
Oh that's a good one too! I hadn't thought of it as I always go through all the voice lines right away when I get a new character. :)
Honorary mention to Fontaine as well. The release and story patches were coming out during a very traumatic period of my life, so I clung onto the story and in a way, it kept me sane. So Fontaine has a special place in my heart for that reason as well
The green and lush Veluriyam Mirage after all the desert updates (and that nostalgic harmonica OST!)
And the whimsical adventures in Simulanka (esp. the frogs and squirrels).
Like I can load up Bina and Ineffa and play Ningguang lunar crystalize for Lantern Rite and it's totally fine
Do your part everyday and one day you may own a C1 Columbina
Not that I care but you should know where your data is going
At this point i just wanna see the story to the end and share this neverending journey.
And then my second favorite memory was when I pulled on Navia's banner with only a handful of wishes to my name and NO CLUE how pity worked and I got her. I was so excited and I felt like I had been blessed. I still don't fully understand how pity works and I just pull when I like the character, which is probably not great for team building but I still have fun :)
I also like that, the longer you play, the less demanding it becomes. I don't feel I need every character that comes out, I don't feel the pressure to spend resin or max out the bp. I miss some days but i'm still able to complete the events and stories with limited time rewards on time.
No energy? Just juggle the heck out of hilichurls with CA, Jump, skill x2, plunge attack
Felt refreshing from just basic attacks using Razor.
Nowadays? Unbuffed Skirk Burst nukes small fries in the overworld lol.
Fun fact : when i first encountered powered up Fatui Recruits in Liyue, thought they're Ruin Guard level elite enemies.. Like wtf are those elemental shields?
I was abroad during the pandemic, and one of my university roommates suggested that we all try that new 3D anime RPG that worked on both mobile and PC. It ended up reviving our group chat, and six years later we’re still chatting about everyday stuff, even though the one who got us into Genshin doesn't play it anymore (others still do).
So even if I stop playing the game someday, I'm still thankful that it has re-connected us friends together during difficult time.
I also got help from a stranger during my early days on Dragonspine. We ended up becoming friends and we’re still friends to this day. He now plays other games with my friends and I too. Kinda insane how a random co-op can do that lol
Made it to the harbour in the evening. Liyue Harbour at night from a distance is still amazing as ever.
My other favourite memory was me jumping into new player worlds during the Ayaya Forever banner period. Everyone asked me how to navigate Dragonspine Mountain lol.
Im literally still on this game because if I leave we won't share any common interest anymore
Cue adventure styled gacha in a fantasy type setting, my need was fulfilled. Heck I skipped venti cause I was like ehh, but I played all the starter 4*s + keqing was enough to hook me. I remember when I used to think Bennett was bad and razor was peak cause he had a STAND (jojo my love) I logged in every single day straight for 3 and a half years till I got sick one day and slept all day an didn’t login, got so upset I called off of work the next day lol
But man I didn’t think genshin would be the game I would like as much as I do, cause I used to HATE spending money in a video game till Genshin and then it became normal cause I learned how to manage my money to set aside a budget for (entertainment purposes) every month. That I became a financial advisor over time since I knew how to save and make money after that.
The game has been there when I’m sad, happy, bored, excited all that jazz. Best memory is definitely getting C3 raiden shogun on release in 20 pulls and then Engulfing lightning in the immediate 10 pull. Knew I was one of her favorites then lmao
for those who come after
One of my favourite memories would be finding that beautiful desert oasis - it was so unexpected and bittersweet in terms of how the eternity that gods searched for was portrayed.
Still, to this day, the game means a lot to me.
I am an adult, btw, 45😊
My fondest memories are figuring out how to get to the top of Dragonspine slowly unlocking the waypoints and being surprised and amazed we could go so much higher in the air to see the celestial nail.
It’s been a joy to see the game improve patch after patch, year after year. I started during the very first lantern right and I’m recalling now the grindy fetch quests from a dozen NPCs compared to the streamlined storyline we have now.
