While I hope they won't use the overused cliche of the MC's best friend being the villain all along, this is the only way I can somewhat expect it if they do go that route

2nd, according to your theory, Asmoday has lost all her powers. So how do you explain that in "A Space and Time for you", Asmoday could be seen spying on the twins, casually using her portals? That would be impossible if she was Paimon.
3rd, the Timeline doesn't match. Asmoday disappeared 500 years ago during the Cataclysm. However, Paimon and the Traveler met 500 years **After** the Cataclysm. Asmoday was already serving whoever her new master is long before Paimon and the Traveler even met.

The reason why? We don't know, but it's not a stretch to assume that either she wanted to see if the abyss twin had completed the loom of fate or make sure that the Paradox with Direidyth is correctly triggered.
