Yep! There were so many times that I almost killed it. I aimed for 9999 but I guess it doesn't stop there lol. I got 280+ every round and stopped when I reached 10k.
I killed the boss after, I have ~8k left after upgrading everything!

By not killing the boss.
I just ignore the boss when it appears and I continue lighting up lanterns/killing enemies! After time runs out, you can still continue (as long as you don't kill the boss)

I'm not entirely sure by what you mean but here's what I think,
After one attempt, and then you run out of time (considering you didn't kill the boss, which appears after lighting up lanterns/killing enemies 30 times), you have an option to exit or go to the next round. Then in that next round, you can enhance your skills and fight again.
My other thought (which is most likely the answer) is that you've killed the boss in that attempt, this means that you have to wait for the next day (irl) til you can play this mini game again.
Razor language:
Don't kill boss > next round. (This is what I did)
Kill boss > can't play anymore :( wait til moon fall and sun rise
